'@tanstack/ai-openai': patch
---

`embed()` with the OpenAI adapter now sends inputs in sequential requests of at most 2048 inputs each, the endpoint's limit, and sums the token usage. Before, more than 2048 texts failed with a 400 error. OpenAI also limits one request to 300,000 tokens across all inputs, so a large array of long texts can still fail. Split those calls yourself.

Reject empty input in createEmbeddings before the batch loop.

With input: [], the new loop makes no request and returns embeddings: [] with zero usage. Before this change, the API rejected the empty array with a 400 error. Throw before the loop so an empty input reports an error, as the OpenAI endpoint and sibling activities do.

Suggested fix
     const texts = requireTextOnlyEmbeddingInput(options.input, this.name, model)
+    if (texts.length === 0) {
+ throw new Error(`${this.name} embed() requires at least one input`)
+    }

Update createEmbeddings to reject empty input after
requireTextOnlyEmbeddingInput produces texts and before the batch loop,
preserving the existing error-reporting behavior for other inputs.

Partition embedding requests by total token count as well as input count.

Each request holds at most 2048 inputs. The endpoint also rejects a request whose inputs total more than 300,000 tokens. The slice at embedding.ts:97 does not check the token total. A 2048-input slice of long texts can therefore fail, even when smaller slices would succeed.

This failure is not a regression from the PR. Requests of 2048 or fewer inputs keep the same single request, so the token limit already applied to them before the change. The PR fixes only the input-count limit for larger arrays. Splitting by token total needs a per-text token count, which the current code does not compute.

Review comment at @packages/ai-openai/src/adapters/embedding.ts at line 97:
Update the embedding request batching around texts.slice to respect both
OPENAI_MAX_BATCH_SIZE and the 300,000-token request limit. Establish and use an
accurate per-text token count for the relevant model, then form ordered batches
that stay within both limits; do not rely on text length as a token estimate.
