fix(ai-ollama): keep parallel same-name tool calls apart when ids are missing - #1932
When Ollama sends no tool-call id, two parallel calls to the same tool got the same made-up id, so the second call merged into the first. This PR makes the fallback id unique per call with the existing generateId helper. Ids that Ollama sends are not changed.
🎯 Changes
ai-ollama text adapter: the fallback tool-call id is now generateId(name), not `${name}_${Date.now()}`. The cast types id and function.index as optional, to match the wire.
Unit test: two search calls with no id and a frozen clock give two distinct ids. Each END id matches its START id.
E2E: Ollama joins the parallel-tool-calls set. A new fixture and test send two compareGuitars calls in one response.
Changeset: patch for @tanstack/ai-ollama.
No docs change. The behavior fix is internal to the adapter.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. Ollama users on servers that send no tool-call id lose a call when the model calls the same tool twice in one response. Older Ollama servers, proxies, and aimock send no id. Cause.handleToolCall in packages/ai-ollama/src/adapters/text.ts built the id as `${name}_${Date.now()}`. Both calls run in the same millisecond, so they get the same id. The toolCallsEmitted check then skips the second TOOL_CALL_START. Its ARGS and END still go out under the shared id, so the two calls merge into one run with the wrong args. Fix.generateId(name) adds a random part, so each call gets its own id.
Possible alternatives
Add the call index to the old id. This was the first version of this PR. It needs extra reasoning for a missing index and duplicates what generateId does.
Always make our own id and ignore Ollama's. Ollama does not match tool results by id, so this is safe. It drops the link to Ollama's own call_… ids in logs, so this PR keeps them.
Testing
Commands run
vitest run tests/text-adapter.test.ts in packages/ai-ollama: 30 passed.
tsc --noEmit in packages/ai-ollama, plus oxlint and oxfmt on the changed files: clean.
A separate repro test with two id-less search calls failed on clean main (one TOOL_CALL_START) and passed on this branch.
Skipped locally: pnpm test:pr and the E2E suite. CI runs them.
Manual test
On main, run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-ollama test:lib with this PR's new unit test. It fails: one START, not two.
On this branch, run the same command. All tests pass.
Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e -- --grep "ollama — parallel-tool-calls". Both tests pass, and the page shows two compareGuitars calls.
How this PR makes testing easy
The new unit test in packages/ai-ollama/tests/text-adapter.test.ts and the new E2E case in testing/e2e/tests/parallel-tool-calls.spec.ts.
Risk / rollback
Low risk. Only the format of made-up ids changes (search-<ts>-<random>). Ollama is new to the parallel-tool-calls E2E set, so CI may show an unrelated aimock gap. To roll back, revert this PR.
This pull request was prepared with the assistance of an AI agent (Claude).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Parallel calls to the same tool in Ollama are now assigned distinct identifiers when the provider does not supply IDs. This keeps each call’s results associated with the correct request, including when multiple calls occur at nearly the same time. Provider-supplied identifiers continue to be preserved.
Tests
Added coverage for parallel tool calls to verify that each call and its results remain correctly matched.

Walkthrough
The Ollama text adapter now generates fallback IDs for tool calls without provider-supplied IDs. Unit and end-to-end tests cover parallel calls to the same tool.

Use the local array index for ID-less Ollama calls.
Ollama’s ToolCall type has no ID field, and ToolCallFunction.Index is a plain integer that can be 0. If parallel calls share index 0, the fallback IDs collide in the same millisecond and toolCallsEmitted suppresses the second start.
Different timestamps do not fix the full issue. ToolCallManager keys calls by emitted index, so repeated index 0 overwrites the earlier call. Use each tool_calls array position for ID-less calls in both the fallback ID and emitted index. Preserve provider-supplied IDs and indexes.

Reuse the existing generateId helper instead of a hand-built
name_Date.now()_index id. Type id/index as optional to match the wire.
Add an Ollama E2E case for parallel calls to the same tool, and fix the
changeset wording (the second call was merged, not dropped).

Thanks @pcbeingused333! Reproduced the merged-call bug on main with a separate test and confirmed the fix. I switched the fallback to the existing generateId helper, tidied the test, and added an Ollama E2E case for parallel calls to the same tool.

ToolCallDisplay renders both the tool-call card and its input element. Both match the helper’s prefix selector. The new exact assertion therefore receives four entries instead of two.
