Adds @tanstack/ai-zai, a Z.AI (GLM) adapter. Z.AI is OpenAI compatible with four quirks, so the adapter extends the shared OpenAI chat completions base and overrides only those four places.

This is the fresh PR that @tombeckenham asked for in #227. The old PR could not be moved onto current main, so this branch starts from the ai-groq / ai-grok skeleton and ports the surviving pieces.

🎯 Changes

Is it OpenAI compatible? Yes, with four quirks. That is the whole design: one base adapter, four overrides.

The six steps from #227, and where each one landed:

  1. Skeleton from ai-groq / ai-grok on current main. packages/ai-zai/ copies their manifest, exports map, vite entries, tsconfig, and test layout. The text adapter is an OpenAIBaseChatCompletionsTextAdapter subclass.
  2. Ported the surviving pieces. model-meta.ts (10 GLM models with context, output limits, modalities, reasoning levels, and pricing), message-types.ts, a trimmed text/text-provider-options.ts with the Responses-API fields deleted, utils/client.ts with withZaiDefaults, and zaiWebSearchTool as a branded provider tool per grok's pattern.
  3. Quirk overrides only:
    • coding: true switches the base URL to https://api.z.ai/api/coding/paas/v4. A baseURL you pass still wins.
    • Z.AI rejects response_format: { type: "json_schema" }. outputSchema sends json_object plus your schema in the system prompt, then parses the reply with your schema.
    • Z.AI accepts a tool_choice of auto only. toolChoice: 'none' sends no tools at all, so you get the text-only answer. 'required' and a named tool warn once and fall back to auto, the same way the ai-codex, ai-acp, and ai-claude-code adapters report a choice they cannot honor.
    • Vision models take video_url parts, which the OpenAI SDK types do not model. The URL must be HTTP(S); a base64 source throws before the request.
  4. Latest GLM models. glm-5.3 and glm-5.3-flash are new here, alongside glm-5.2, glm-5.1, glm-5-turbo, glm-5, glm-5v-turbo, glm-4.7, glm-4.6, glm-4.6v. reasoning_effort differs per model, so glm-5.2 maps all seven levels (off sends none) and the two GLM-5.3 models map low, high, and max. A level the model does not have clamps to the nearest one it has.
  5. Summarize is a thin factory. zaiSummarize builds a ChatStreamSummarizeAdapter over the text adapter. No second stream implementation.
  6. e2e matrix and changeset. zai is a provider in testing/e2e, with 16 feature matrix entries, plus .changeset/zai-chat-completions-adapter.md (minor).

What a user gets on top of the six steps:

  • zaiByok at @tanstack/ai-zai/byok, so a browser key in the x-byok-zai header wins over ZAI_API_KEY.
  • Reasoning streamed from delta.reasoning_content, the same shape as BytePlus and Grok.
  • Image and video input on glm-5.3-flash, glm-5v-turbo, and glm-4.6v.
  • docs/adapters/zai.md and the adapters nav entry.
  • Example app wiring: ts-react-chat (model picker plus the BYOK key dialog), ts-solid-chat, ts-svelte-chat, ts-vue-chat, ts-react-search (structured output), and ts-code-mode-web.

The first CodeRabbit review round is addressed on this branch: the tool_choice and reasoning-map corrections above, the awaited outputSchema result and the client half of the BYOK guide in both docs, and the example routes now read forwardedProps.provider with Object.hasOwn instead of in, so an inherited key such as constructor cannot reach an adapter. The second round had one finding, the addedAt date on the new docs entry; 241db8c22 sets it to 2026-10-30.

The branch is current with main. It carries upstream/main at 3ce3085d6 through a merge commit, so the diff stays one commit deep against main. The merge resolved one conflict, described below.

Merge conflict resolution. The only colliding file is testing/e2e/src/lib/feature-support.ts. In the same provider list, main added 'ollama' to the tool-streaming feature and this branch added 'zai' at the same position. Both entries are correct and both are kept. No other file collided: docs/config.json and the remaining 97 files from main merged without a change. The upstream commits that moved fastest are the ollama parallel tool-call id fix (#1932) and the pinned Node bump to 24.22.1 (#1914).

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run. pnpm test:pr is green at branch head 241db8c22. Nx ran test:sherif, test:knip, test:docs, test:kiira, test:maintainer, test:ai-review, test:oxlint, test:lib, test:types, test:build and build for 114 projects, and @tanstack/ai-zai reported 72 tests passing (5 files). node scripts/scan-dangling-dts.mjs is clean over 1316 .d.ts files in 78 dist directories. Coverage is skipped (CI-only per CONTRIBUTING.md).

E2E is re-run on the merged tree with E2E_PROVIDERS=zai pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e: 615 passed, 4 skipped, 1 failed. Every spec whose name starts with zai passes. The failure is multimodal-tool-result-wire.spec.ts:205 (openrouter-responses), a file neither this branch nor the merged main commits touch. All 7 tests in that file pass with --workers=1, so the shared aimock journal races the parallel workers. The merge did not cause it. pnpm --filter ts-solid-chat test:types and pnpm --filter ts-svelte-chat test:types are clean.

Manual test.

  1. pnpm install, then copy examples/ts-react-chat/.env.example to .env and set ZAI_API_KEY.
  2. pnpm --filter ts-react-chat dev.
  3. Open the app, pick a GLM model from the picker (for example glm-5.3), and send a message. Reload the page: the picker keeps your choice.
  4. Open the API keys dialog, paste a key under Z.AI, and send again. The header key now wins over the env key.
  5. Ask for JSON with outputSchema, or add zaiWebSearchTool to a run and watch the search rows arrive.

How this PR makes testing easy. packages/ai-zai/tests/ holds 59 unit tests over 3 files (zai-adapter, zai-factory, model-meta) and 13 live tests over 2 files that skip unless ZAI_API_KEY_TEST is set. New coverage for this round: toolChoice: 'none' drops the tools, a forcing choice warns once, a base64 video source throws, and each model's reasoning map. The e2e side needs no new aimock fixtures: Z.AI posts to /v1/chat/completions, which aimock already mocks, so E2E_PROVIDERS=zai runs the shared matrix.

Linked issues

Replaces #227, which the maintainer closed as too far behind main. This branch follows the 6-step plan from that thread.

Risk / rollback

Low. The only new surface is the @tanstack/ai-zai package and its /byok and /tools subpaths. Existing providers, core packages, and the shared OpenAI base are untouched. The e2e and example changes are additive: a zai entry in each matrix list and one new case 'zai' branch per route. Revert this PR to remove all of it.

The merge adds no risk of its own. It brings in 9 commits from main, and the one hand-edited line is a feature-matrix entry, not runtime code. If the resolution is wrong, a reviewer sees it as a failing zai or ollama row in the e2e matrix rather than a silent behavior change. To undo the merge alone: git revert -m 1 7fd121555 (that commit is the merge; 241db8c22 sits on top of it and holds only the docs date fix).

Two behavior choices need a maintainer's eye, because they are adapter policy rather than API fact. toolChoice: 'none' removes the tools from the request instead of sending auto, and a forcing choice warns once per adapter instance instead of throwing. Both follow what the other agent-CLI adapters already do. glm-5.3, glm-5.3-flash, and the coding: true endpoint are newer API surface than the #227 discussion, so a reviewer with a Z.AI key should confirm the reasoning levels and the JSON mode fallback against the live endpoint.

Public API change

New package, so there is no "before". This is what a user writes:

import { chat } from '@tanstack/ai'
import { createZAIText, zaiText } from '@tanstack/ai-zai'

// Server route
const order = await chat({
  adapter: createZAIText('glm-5.3', process.env.ZAI_API_KEY, {
    coding: true, // optional: the coding endpoint
  }),
  messages,
  threadId,
  reasoning: 'high', // clamped to what the model supports
  outputSchema: orderSchema, // resolves to the parsed object
})

// Or the shorthand adapter factory
const adapter = zaiText('glm-5.3')

Browser-supplied key, same pattern as ai-groq and ai-grok:

import { byokMissing, getByokKey } from '@tanstack/ai/byok/server'
import { zaiByok } from '@tanstack/ai-zai/byok'

const apiKey = getByokKey(request, zaiByok) // x-byok-zai, then ZAI_API_KEY
if (!apiKey) return byokMissing(zaiByok)

Bring the Z.AI adapter branch up to date with TanStack/ai main.
Conflicts resolved in favor of incoming upstream changes.
Move ai-zai to packages/ and delegate the AG-UI lifecycle to
@tanstack/openai-base, keeping only the Z.AI quirks: coding endpoint,
json_object schema fallback, auto-only tool_choice, and
reasoning_content streaming. Ship the GLM-5.3/5.2 and GLM-4 catalog,
and wire zai into the e2e matrix with a changeset.
Publish a zaiByok descriptor at @tanstack/ai-zai/byok so a browser key
(x-byok-zai) wins over ZAI_API_KEY, and export the model catalog at runtime
so an app can build a picker or a request schema from it.

Wire Z.AI into the React chat example: four picker entries, the request
schema case, and the BYOK card in the key dialog.

The README still described the pre-rebuild adapter (createZAIChat, GLM-4.x
only, no structured output). Rewrite it against what the package exports
today, including the reasoning levels and coding endpoint.
Publishes the provider page for the rebuilt adapter: install, streaming
endpoint, reasoning levels, structured output, tools, vision, summarization,
the coding endpoint, and BYOK. Wires the page into the adapters nav.
The panel kept a GLM default model with no GLM provider route, and the search
example kept the Groq schema helper after it moved to Z.AI.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(ai-zai): add Z.AI adapter on the OpenAI chat completions base" matches the main change: a new @tanstack/ai-zai package that adds a Z.AI (GLM) adapter built on the shared OpenAI chat completions base. It is specific, short, and follows conventional-commit style. The changeset, docs, example wiring, and e2e matrix are supporting changes that the title does not need to mention.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is thorough and mostly complete. It explains the purpose and design (OpenAI-compatible base with four overrides), lists the changes and where each landed, and includes the Changes section, the checklist, and the Release Impact section from the template. It also covers testing commands, a manual test procedure, risk and rollback, and a public API example. The template's checklist items are all marked, and a changeset is referenced. It does not follow the template's exact wording of the Changes section, but the required information is present.

Add Z.AI models to the reporting selector.

The reporting page sends the selected MODEL_OPTIONS entry to /api/reports, but the list has no Z.AI entry. Users cannot select Z.AI on this page. The impact is limited to this selector because the API and another demo route already support Z.AI.

Z.AI accepts a tool_choice of auto only, so a request for none previously
still shipped the tools and let the model call them. Drop the tools for
none and warn once for required or named choices instead, matching how the
codex, acp and claude-code adapters report an unsupportable choice.

The reasoning maps were narrower than the API: glm-5.3-flash takes low,
high and max, and glm-5.2 takes every level plus none for off. A base64
video source now throws before the request rather than sending a payload
Z.AI rejects, and the docs and README gained the missing client half of
BYOK, an awaited outputSchema call, and the URL-only video limit.

Dropped the hand-written CHANGELOG: changesets generates it at release.
… pick

forwardedProps.provider is browser input, so an in check reaches inherited
keys such as constructor; both chat routes now use Object.hasOwn. The solid
picker ignored the stored preference the svelte page already reads, and its
Z.AI factory forced the coding-plan endpoint with a general API key.

Removed testing/panel/.env.example: the panel builds its adapters from
request keys, not environment keys, so the file advertised values it never
reads.

Pass the selected provider and model as persistent forwardedProps in the Solid chat.

Client-tool continuations drop the per-call body. The server then falls back to OpenAI. The sendMessage body only covers the request that sends the user message. The continuation is a separate streamResponse() call that does not receive it.

Expose only effective GLM-5.2 reasoning levels.

When a caller requests low or medium, this metadata sends that value unchanged. Z.AI maps both values to high, so the caller receives more reasoning than the selected level implies. Limit the advertised levels to effective choices, and update the matching metadata and adapter tests. (docs.z.ai)

The new-page rule in AGENTS.md sets addedAt to the day the entry is
added. The page was written on 2026-10-29, but the PR has not merged, so

Re: the CodeRabbit finding on docs/config.json (discussion_r4425657572) — fixed in 241db8c. The adapters/zai entry now reads addedAt: 2026-10-30, per the new-page rule in AGENTS.md.

The previous value was not wrong in itself. The page landed in b378d33, dated 2026-10-29, and the other recent entries in that file each carry their own landing date. The finding compares the entry with the review run date rather than the commit date, so the value drifts again if this PR stays open past today. Replying here rather than inline because the finding's anchor commit (7fd1215) is now behind the branch head, so its diff position is outdated.

If a maintainer prefers the date of the docs commit, say so and I will revert this one line.

pnpm test:pr is green on 241db8c, including test:docs and test:kiira (1957 snippets passed).
