This PR adds @tanstack/ai-harness, a new package to build long-lived agents on TanStack AI. A harness keeps one conversation open across many turns, takes new inputs while it works, runs typed agents from code, loads plugins, and survives a host crash with a session log. You react to its events with session.onEvent(...) and turn.onMedia(...). It also adds a skills plugin to @tanstack/ai-skills, an ACP v2 agent to @tanstack/ai-acp, and server-side key storage to @tanstack/ai/byok. This is the single core harness PR, split out of #1555.

How the harness lands:

  1. This PR merges the persistence session stores from feat(ai-persistence): session stores for inputs, credentials, a log, leases, work claims, and a session index #1754 (that PR is folded in here and closes).
  2. Small feature PRs target feat/harness-core and merge into it first.
  3. Then this PR merges into main once.

🎯 Changes

Package. packages/ai-harness, modeled on packages/ai-compaction. Only the "." export. Peer dependencies: @tanstack/ai, @tanstack/ai-persistence. No @tanstack/store (the view feature brings it).

Source (core scope of the split manifest):

  • Contracts and plugin API: types, define, agents, config, extensions, resources, session-entry, usage, feed, operation, media-ref, utils, plugins, commands, auth.
  • Session engine and host: session/*, host, turn, media, harness-text, harness-agent.
  • Durability: log, resume, durable-tool.
  • index.ts exports the core only. It does not re-export first-party/permissions (that moves to the plugins feature).

The session split. #1555 had one 7,429-line session.ts. It is now src/session/ with an index.ts that exports the same names. Imports use ./session/index, because the test:dts scan rejects a directory specifier in a published .d.ts:

  • types.ts and helpers.ts: the module-level types, constants, and functions.
  • One file per layer of the class: base (fields, constructor) → inputs → state → requests → turn-parts → agents → turn → harness-session (the final HarnessSession). Each layer is an abstract class that extends the one before. Every file is about 1,050 lines or fewer.
  • The methods moved as-is. A script checked that every line of the old class is in the new files. The only mechanical changes: private became protected, and five methods that lower layers call (drain, agentGroup, pluginApi, resumeSignIns, runAgent) plus a new self() have abstract declarations in base and override on the implementation.

Read a child's messages after a reload. session.agentTranscript(subagentRunId) returns the saved messages of one child agent of the thread. The session view (#1761) uses it to show subagents again after a reload. It reads them with the new loadChildTranscript from @tanstack/ai-persistence:

  • It walks the stored parent chain up to the session's thread. A child of another thread gives [], because the id can come from a prompt. A loop in stored data stops at depth 64.
  • A child that failed before its first message keeps its card-only head, so a UI can still read that it failed.
  • A fork does not read the children of its source thread. A test pins this.
  • Docs: a new section "Show what a child wrote after a reload" in docs/harness/subagents.md.

Typed hooks for the events a user acts on. An app does not filter CUSTOM events by name to answer a question or show a sign-in:

session.onQuestion(({ question }) =>
  session.answer({ questionId: question.questionId, value: 'once' }),
)
session.onAuthRequired(({ connector, url, userCode }) => showSignIn(connector, url, userCode))
session.onUsage(({ total }) => render(total.totalTokens))
session.onMedia(({ media }) => show(media))
  • Each hook returns a stop function. Each entry also has the operationId. A value with a bad shape is skipped.
  • New exported types: PendingQuestion (also the item type of snapshot().pendingQuestions), AuthRequest, UsageUpdate, and OnHarnessEvent.
  • No hooks for the other harness events. They sync UI state, and ./view reads them.
  • Docs: mcp.md, auth.md, usage.md, media.md, and plugins.md use the hooks. Test: tests/session-hooks.test.ts.

Fixes pushed after #1807. Two fixes to code in this PR. Each has a repro test that fails on 91c36c330 and passes after the fix.

  1. A session view can answer a permissions() approval (4f7a7a1e6, @tanstack/ai-harness).
    • Issue: from createSessionView, approve({ payload: 'always' }), approve({ editedArgs }), and reject({ payload: 'use pnpm' }) failed the resumed turn with "payload is invalid ... required property answer". Only a plain approve() worked.
    • Cause: the view answers with the core resolution { approved, payload?, editedArgs? }. APPROVAL_ANSWER_SCHEMA refused that shape, and readApproval() read a yes as a reject and dropped the reject message.
    • Fix: the schema and readApproval() accept the view shape. A yes is the answer that its payload names, or once. A no rejects, with the payload as the message. A yes with editedArgs rejects, because this approval cannot apply edited arguments, and the original call of the model is not what the user approved.
    • Possible alternatives: apply editedArgs in permissions() (a new feature, not part of a fix). Run the original arguments (not safe).
  2. runCli({ ui }) gives the UI the full session (5b946ea55, @tanstack/ai-harness-cli).
    • Issue: in a custom ui, view.loadAgent() did nothing, view.putMedia() failed, and updateThreadSettings, reset, revert, unrevert, continueWithoutMessage, cancelInput, and changeInputDelivery showed an error notice.
    • Cause: attachingSource() passed 12 of the 21 SessionViewSource members to the view.
    • Fix: pass every member. The object has the type Required<SessionViewSource>, so a missing member is a type error.
    • Possible alternatives: { ...session, send } passes tsc but copies no methods, because the session handle is a Proxy over a class. Passing the session itself loses the @path attach of send.

Coding agent support (pushed after #1807). These changes let a terminal coding agent run on the harness. Each one is its own commit:

  1. A host logger (fdc8ad230, eaa9853a8, a4db92f58, 2705ae5a8). createHarnessHost({ logger }) takes a Logger from @tanstack/ai (default ConsoleLogger). Every harness console.warn and console.error goes to it, plugins get it as ctx.logger, and the errors of the session's model calls go to it. Child agents use it through a new core SubagentBinding.debug. mcp() and codeMode() warn through ctx.logger. A logger that throws or rejects cannot break the harness.

  2. PermissionCallCapability (6731d112f). A plugin that runs a tool call itself gets the same decision as a direct call: allow, deny, or ask (with the approval question and schema). settle() reads the answer and saves an always rule.

  3. Code mode runs the coding tools (316dbbcb2). codeMode({ include }) can move a tool with permission checks, like the coding tools. Each call inside a program gets the decision of a direct call. An ask makes the program wait on a step.ask question that uses the approval schema. Each checked call is a step.do, so a host stop does not run finished calls again. The program timeout defaults to 10 minutes when a checked tool moves. The new directCalls: 'remove' | 'keep' option (also a session setting) keeps a moved tool in the normal tool list.

  4. Live file diffs (d6a3af3dd, a36748d91). A new FileChanged plugin event from @tanstack/ai-harness/plugins/coding carries the path, the kind of change, a unified patch, and the counts. write_file, edit_file, and patch send it after the write hooks. snapshots() sends it for the files that bash changed. Binary files, files over 1 MiB, patches over 256 KiB, and .env files get no patch. The patch comes from a new unifiedDiff() with no new dependency.

  5. Docker copies a local folder (d999b17aa). dockerSandbox().create() with localSource(dir) copies the files that git lists, with their uncommitted changes, and the current branch as a git bundle. So git status in the container matches the host. A git worktree works. A folder that is not a full git repo fails with a clear error.

  6. Host plugins get the logger (e4ceb6de8). HostPluginContext.logger lets a lifetime: 'host' plugin warn without a session. skills() sends its shared-folder warnings there.

  7. Fix: the snippets build (46136ef66). @tanstack/ai-code-mode-snippets failed to build with TS2883, because an inferred type named the internal CodeModeCallHook. The aroundCalls option writes the hook type out.

  8. Fix: a permissions() approval in the view names its tool (787718a82). A permissions() approval is a generic interrupt, and its tool call id is only in its payload. The view did not find the call, so the approval item had the question text as tool and no args. The view now reads the id from the payload, so a UI gets the tool name, the args, and the toolCallId. A proof run with a real model found this.

  9. Fix: view.ready settles when the session closes during its first load (228d9c108). A closed session handle throws at once from describe(), snapshot(), and transcript(). The first load called them inside Promise.resolve(...), so the throw escaped the .catch, and view.ready rejected with no handler. Now the view shows the error as a notice, and ready resolves, as for any other failed read. An app built on the harness found this.

  10. Fix: Docker resume() hid a stopped Docker (142b8f239). resume() turned every inspect error into null. So a stopped Docker looked like a deleted container, and the harness said that the workspace is gone. Now only a 404 gives null. Any other error goes to the caller. A patch changeset covers it.

  11. Fix: undo, redo, and revert send FileChanged (81cada2b6). snapshots() restored files with git for /undo, /redo, revert(), and unrevert(), and sent no FileChanged. So a live diff, or a sandbox that copies files back to the user's folder, never saw the restore. Each restore now sends one event for each file that it puts back, built by the same code as the end-of-step events. A user edit to another file sends no event. .env files stay out.

  12. Fix: a quit before the first model call kept no user message (b6ca70836). A turn counts as started when its applied record is in the log, but the first chat() call saves the user message. After a recoverable close or a crash in between, recovery ran the model with messages: []. A turn that had added a note was also settled as completed, because the note looked like an answer. The user message now has a fixed id, user-<inputId>. Recovery adds the message once when the transcript does not have it, and a note no longer counts as an answer before the message is saved.

  13. Test fix (79a946689). The resume-edges test "reports an inner failure as a run error" passed no threadId, which is required since 9d999ebdc. Its as never cast hid that, and the test failed on the branch.

  14. Fixes from the fifth findings list (c121f260c..41aff075e, changeset harness-round5-fixes). An app built on the harness sent a list of bugs and gaps. This fixes 31 of them. Each fix has a regression test:

    • Recovery and approvals. A resolve that another host recovers runs its continuation. Before, it settled completed with no answer (B15). A tool that a middleware adds in onConfig can be approved: chat() checks a durable resume after the whole onConfig chain (B16).
    • Cancel and steer. A cancelled turn keeps its streamed text and ends with TEXT_MESSAGE_END and RUN_FINISHED (outcome: cancelled). A turn that times out ends with RUN_ERROR (B7, B8). A steer from another sender gets a queued receipt, and host.events() goes back to idle after a joined steer (B9, B14). The duplicate-input check ignores key order (B6).
    • Small harness gaps. TurnInfo.model, attempt, and sender. The log keeps the sender's name. harness.input.accepted has the message, and the chat hydration has pendingWaits. Also ObservedSession.settled(), harness middleware on plugin model calls, subagents.background: false, media.urlTtlMs, a beforeWrite workspace hook, and the reason constants and HARNESS_EVENTS exports (G3, G10, G12, G13, G14, G15, G16, A16, A17, A18, N10, N11).
    • Compaction and sandbox. conversationSummarizer({ middleware }). A background summary from another model is dropped. Sandbox file calls take { signal } (C1, C2, G8).
    • Providers and client. Anthropic outputSchema keywords, 1-hour cache-write usage, and a warning for reasoning on an unlisted model. OpenAI Responses replay ids: the first fix broke the same-model replay from feat(ai, openai-base): keep Responses answer item ids and phases for a same-model replay #1726 in E2E, so it was reverted. Now the adapter marks a message whose model call sent a reasoning item (metadata.tanstack.reasoningItem), and a replay drops the ids only when that reasoning item is lost. The Cloudflare data: trailer. rawText and a parse code on structured-output errors. addToolResult with different schemas. A conformance suite that a slow runner passes (B12, B13, B18, B19, H1, N5, A8, N9).
  15. Asks from the fifth findings list (after the merge of main at 9ae0147da, changeset harness-round5-asks). These are the items that needed a maintainer decision:

    • Readers keep the full history after a durable compaction (M1). The log fold keeps two lists: the transcript that readers see, and the compacted model context. Snapshots move to version 6, and version 5 still loads. A revert can pick a message that a compaction removed, and the next turn then drops that compaction.
    • Streamed outputSchema is checked (A7). chat({ outputSchema, stream: true }) now checks the full result against a Standard Schema, and a failure ends with RUN_ERROR structured-output-validation-failed and metadata.tanstack.rawText. This changes core behavior for all streaming users. session.send(prompt, { outputSchema }) gives a typed structured value. It is per send only, and HTTP does not take it.
    • New harness hooks. createHarnessHost({ acceptInput }) can change or refuse an input before the log keeps it (G18). A plugin adapter() pick with override: true wins over the stored model (A13). onModelError can return { retry: true, adapter } (A14). Middleware reads ctx.context.run.source and label (G15).
    • Threads. host.sessions.archive/unarchive, with withArchived: true on lists (A12). host.sessions.eraseUser({ harness, threadId, userId, replies: 'keep' | 'remove' }), guarded by a new erase access action (A10). HarnessRecord is exported, and the session-log docs show an encrypting LogStore wrapper (A11).
    • Tools and limits. A server tool calls context.get(capability) (G9). Coding-tool file calls pass their abort signal through WorkspaceBackend (G8). withCompaction limits can be a function of { model } (C2).
  16. Repair after the model sync on main (chore: sync model metadata #1882) (0b5f3e918). The sync broke main, and this PR merges main. The ElevenLabs audio model list now takes plain strings, because the sync added eleven_text_to_sound_v3 and the SDK types do not list it yet. The adapter casts at the SDK call. Tests and docs that used removed models (anthropic/claude-sonnet-4, alibaba/qwen3-235b-a22b-thinking) use models that still exist. The OpenRouter docs no longer set temperature on Claude Sonnet 5.5, which does not take it now. The E2E route api.openrouter-structured-usage also moves off anthropic/claude-sonnet-4 (9192f2b22).

E2E (CI runs them): 51c7dbc3c answers a harness approval with the shape that a session view sends. d464fb9ac runs a code mode program that edits a file after an approval. ba0dcb9aa checks FileChanged for a write_file edit and for a file that bash wrote.

Docs: 0d4321cb6 (copy a local folder into Docker), 74efa980e (the coding tools in a code mode program, directCalls, PermissionCallCapability), 681a13c67 (show live diffs, and answer permissions() approvals from a view), 72837256c (send the warnings to your own logger).

API adaptations vs #1555

Main moved since #1555. These are the changes. One of them touches @tanstack/ai (item 1):

  1. ctx.step and ctx.agents → ctx.harness. Main's agent context has neither. @tanstack/ai gets subagents.binding.extend(ctx), which returns fields to add to the ctx of a child, and an empty SubagentContextExtension interface that a package augments. The harness augments it with harness: HarnessAgentContext, so ctx.harness.step.do() and ctx.harness.agents.start() are typed on the real ctx. Outside a run that a session started from code, step.do runs fn each time and agents.start throws. agents.start returns the harness AgentRun. step uses the existing ToolStep type.

  2. HarnessSubagents omits binding and keys. On main, subagents.keys wins over the binding keys, so a user value would override the session's credential keys. tool: 'single' is gone.

  3. Per-agent subagent tools. Main has one tool per agent, named after the agent. Docs and tests use that.

  4. Cut answers (truncatedToolResult was dropped from core). The harness keeps durability.truncatedToolResult. Without it, the loop strategy is combineStrategies([agentLoopStrategy ?? maxIterations(50), untilFinishReason(['length'])]), so a cut answer ends the turn. A new truncationMiddleware replaces the result of each cut call (error code max_tokens, no run time) with the option text or the harness default. Recovery writes the same text.

  5. Checkpoint skips cut calls. Main calls onAfterToolCall for cut calls. The checkpoint no longer logs a harness.tool.result for them, so the log and the transcript agree.

  6. Prompt cache. The turn binding no longer sets promptCache, so a turn override of the retention reaches tool-mode children. Agents run from code still get the session retention.

  7. isContextOverflow → CONTEXT_OVERFLOW_CODE in tests. turn.onModelError documents that a middleware onModelError (for example withCompaction) runs first inside chat().

  8. Routing errors use main's texts.

  9. Event callbacks and one-object parameters (feat(ai-harness, ai-persistence, ai-skills): onEvent and onMedia callbacks, object params, and review fixes #1779).

    • session.onEvent(listener), session.onEvent(type, listener), turn.onEvent(...), and turn.onMedia(...) call your function as each event goes out. Each returns a stop function. A turn's listeners go away a tick after it settles. A listener that throws is logged and does not stop the turn.
    • ChatTurnResult always has media, the files that the turn saved.
    • Multi-argument store and session methods take one object: inbox.markApplied/markRejected, credentials.get/set/delete, logStore.append/subscribe, workClaims.release, sessions.upsertIf, host.sessions.rename/update/fork, session.setConfig/answer/setDelivery.
    • Unchanged: logStore.read(threadId, options?), command run(input, ctx), durableTool execute(args, ctx), step.do(name, fn), send(text, options?).
    • New types: LiveEvent, OnEvent, StreamChunkType, StreamChunkOf.
    • Behavior: inputs sent during close() are rejected with closed. A session keeps the last 500 settled non-agent operations. A lifetime: 'turn' plugin that adds commands or config fails the turn. Credentials that a session hands out are scrubbed from the errors it publishes.
  10. Review fix pass and session.send() (four commits after feat(ai-harness, ai-persistence, ai-skills): onEvent and onMedia callbacks, object params, and review fixes #1779, from a four-reviewer pass over this PR).

  • One session.send(message, options?) replaces prompt, steer, followUp, and sendToAgent. mode is 'prompt' (default), 'steer', or 'followUp'. It always returns an Operation. A steer's operation ends with the turn it joined. send(message, { to: agentOperationId, mode }) sends to an agent run and returns an operation that ends with that run. An unknown run gives a rejected receipt with not_running. continue() and AgentRun.send stay. Log records keep their ops (prompt, steer, followUp, agentMessage), so stored logs replay unchanged. Types: SendOptions, AgentSendOptions. HarnessClient has the same client.send(message, { mode, to }) (type ClientSendOptions) in place of prompt, steer, followUp, and sendToAgent, and SessionViewSource takes send too, so createSessionView accepts a session or a client as before. The plugin ctx.session.send matches.
  • Sessions. Every input settles: commands, detached wakes, and inputs that recovery finds. The principal follows the requester: an agent started from code runs as AgentStartOptions.principal, a detached wake runs as the sender that detached, a steer with no running turn runs as its own turn. Admitted inputs leave the set on reject and on settle. close() waits for an in-flight recovery. Restart notes no longer end a transcript that a cut turn continues. send() refuses a session that waits on interrupts, up front. A Standard Schema command input is validated and a JSON Schema input runs unchecked, as a JSON Schema tool input does in core.
  • Durability. Lease renewal checks the owner and the run status. A run that crashed before its first lease stamp is found. Fork closes the source session it opened and keeps the index entry. resumePending survives one bad thread and emit survives one bad listener. A durable tool result is a copy. Operation.finish and fail wake a feed that waits on them. ResourceScope.dispose no longer waits on in-flight opens. @tanstack/ai-persistence gets defineLeaseStore, memoryLeaseStore, and lease conformance cases. InboxStatus loses 'expired', which nothing produced.
  • Types. Receipt, InputSettlement, MediaRecord, and AgentRun are discriminated by status: a rejected receipt has its reason, a failed settlement its error, generated media its runId, an agent run its agent. SettlementOutcome is the outcome arm alone. The deferred unions (RunRecord, SessionIndexEntry, InputState, durable-only options) are in Discriminate status-dependent record and option types (RunRecord, SessionIndexEntry, InputState, durable-only options) #1799.
  • Adapters. harnessText takes principal, closes only a session it opened (host.isOpen is new, and host.fork uses it too), uses a per-call thread id when none is given, forwards the call's tools as overrides, maps an interrupt to the tool_calls finish reason, and flushes the trailing SSE buffer. The ACP agent forwards TOOL_CALL_ARGS as rawInput and known() checks the harness name. The skills watcher follows the nearest existing ancestor folder.
  1. Credentials move to BYOK, with server-side keys. Keys and OAuth tokens are not a persistence store.
  • CredentialStore, Credential, CredentialScope, and defineCredentialStore are in @tanstack/ai/byok. CredentialScope is tenantId and userId; a threadId is optional and ignored.
  • @tanstack/ai/byok/server adds storedProviderKeys(store, scope), readCredential, tenantScopeOf, memoryCredentialStore(), and envKeyEntry. A plain chat() route can now keep each user's provider key on the server, with no harness and no persistence package.
  • createHarnessHost({ credentials }) and runCli(harness, { credentials }) take the store. stores.credentials is gone from @tanstack/ai-persistence, with its memory store and conformance case.
  • Fix: a user with no tenant no longer reads the bucket that every scope with neither shares.
  • Docs: a new page, docs/advanced/server-keys.md, with the store rules (encrypt at rest, key by tenant and user, hard delete). The persistence skill has a "Secure persistence" section.
  • Open: a secret answer that reaches a non-owner host is written to the inbox until the owner applies it. Question for Alem in this comment.
  1. MCP after the main merge (9ae0147da). Main now calls client.callTool in callMcpTool and sends the tool's inputSchema for the Mcp-Param-* headers. Main also removed rawRequest.
  • The harness askInput loop now uses client.callTool too. It still stops after 5 input rounds.
  • callMcpTool takes inputSchema, then askInput, as its last two parameters.
  • connectTransport keeps onElicit, onClose, and onToolListChanged, next to main's experimental_events. ./harness, ./connector, and ./events are all exports.

Behavior decisions:

  • truncationMiddleware runs right after the checkpoint, before app and plugin middleware, so a later replaceResult still wins.
  • Resumable agent runs also get truncationMiddleware, so their live and recovered cut-call text match.
  • The as never on the turn's chat() call is now only on the middleware and context fields.
  • Setup-level ctx.credentials in a plugin follows the running turn's sender on purpose: tools built in setup run inside turns (input-sender.test.ts).
  • A second host.open of a thread by another principal shares the session on purpose: each input carries its own principal.
  • One changeset for the new package instead of the incremental feat(ai, ai-harness): add the harness stack with coding tools, durable work, replay, and adapter parity #1555 changesets.
  • sessionOfTurn (and its turn finder in createHarnessHost) stays out of core. Only the HTTP handler uses it, so the transport feature adds it back.
  • The lockfile adds only the new importers. A plain pnpm install moved shared zod to 4.6.5 and broke the @tanstack/ai-mcp types, so the harness pins to the zod 4.2.1 that @tanstack/ai already uses.

Tests that moved to features (they need feature code; each feature PR ports them back from #1555):

  • Whole files: agents.test.ts and instructions.test.ts (plugins and coding tools), expose-inputs.test.ts (transport). Only scrubSecrets stays in auth.test.ts (OAuth goes to transport).
  • Cases: HTTP and client cases in sessions-index, reset, status-feed, input-sender, thread-settings (transport); view cases in reset, session-media, session, live-commands, reload (view); bash and workspaceTools cases in background-tools, durable-background, reload, thread-settings (coding tools); usage() and permissions() cases in agent-middleware, first-party edges in session-plugins (plugins).
  • Three approval cases in interrupt-restart.test.ts depend on feat(ai, ai-harness): add the harness stack with coding tools, durable work, replay, and adapter parity #1555-only core behavior (tanstack:approvalContext, raw approved edits). They go to feat/harness-interrupt-resume.

Docs. 16 pages in docs/harness/ and a "Harness" section in docs/config.json. Readers: agent builders on @tanstack/ai-harness. The samples react to events with onEvent and the typed hooks (onQuestion, onAuthRequired, onUsage, onMedia). Two loops stay: host.events() reads the host status stream, and session.events({ from }) resumes from a saved cursor. agents.md (the agent profiles plugin) moves to the plugins feature, and usage.md covers only session.usage().

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

The new packages @tanstack/ai-harness and @tanstack/ai-harness-cli release as 0.1.0 (experimental). The package READMEs and the harness overview page show an experimental warning. Their changesets use minor and patch only, so they do not go to 1.0.0 with the v1 release.

Testing

Commands run. Each merged feature PR ran its package checks. The last numbers, from #1779:

After the typed hooks commit: @tanstack/ai-harness unit tests (72 files, 1006 tests), tsc, test:oxlint (no new warnings), kiira check docs/harness (47 snippets), and pnpm test:docs pass.

After the review fix pass and send(): unit tests pass for @tanstack/ai-harness (56 files, 762 tests), @tanstack/ai-acp (89), @tanstack/ai-skills (80), and the persistence memory conformance file. test:types passes for ai, ai-harness, ai-persistence, ai-acp, and ai-skills. pnpm test:docs passes. oxlint on the changed files shows only pre-existing any warnings. Not run: pnpm test:pr, E2E, and test:types for testing/e2e (its unbuilt dist in this worktree fails on unrelated imports).

After the merge of the ten feature commits onto send() (head 7eea102fd, then the review follow-ups: @tanstack/ai-harness 88 files, 1219 tests): unit tests pass for @tanstack/ai (2563), @tanstack/ai-harness (88 files, 1215 tests), @tanstack/ai-persistence (345), @tanstack/ai-mcp (432), @tanstack/ai-code-mode (176), @tanstack/ai-acp (89), @tanstack/ai-skills (80), and @tanstack/ai-harness-cli (52). test:types passes for all of them. pnpm test:docs passes, and kiira check docs/harness passes 57 of 57 snippets.

After the merge of main at 928dfde3d (computer use, head 66dc3c23b): test:types passes for @tanstack/ai, @tanstack/ai-persistence, and @tanstack/ai-harness. The tool-context unit tests in @tanstack/ai pass (6 files, 14 tests). chat() on main now sets ToolExecutionContext.threadId, so the second threadId field from this branch is removed. CI runs the rest.

After the credential move (c2b505b78): unit tests pass for @tanstack/ai (2568), @tanstack/ai-persistence (344), @tanstack/ai-harness (1219), @tanstack/ai-mcp (432), and @tanstack/ai-harness-cli (52). test:types and test:oxlint pass for ai, ai-persistence, ai-harness, ai-mcp, ai-harness-cli, ai-acp, ai-skills, and ai-code-mode. pnpm test:docs, pnpm test:knip, and kiira check on the 8 changed docs pages (44 snippets) pass. Not run: pnpm test:pr and E2E.

E2E. Harness specs that run a session turn without the HTTP protocol:

  • harness-retry-after.spec.ts: a 429 with Retry-After, then the answer.
  • harness-continue.spec.ts: a stream that fails mid-answer continues its partial text, and session.onEvent sees the streamed text.

Specs that need the HTTP protocol go to the transport feature.

After the two fixes (5b946ea55, 4f7a7a1e6):

  • Fix A: packages/ai-harness/tests/permissions.test.ts, "permissions() answered from a session view" (5 tests). Red on 91c36c330: 5 failed with "payload is invalid". Green after the fix. Both hunks are needed: with only one of them, all 5 fail. The permissions, view, and waits tests (86) pass. 16 related test files (386 tests) passed during the fix.
  • Fix B: packages/ai-harness-cli/tests/cli.test.ts, "custom ui > changes the thread settings and resets the context from the ui view". Red on 91c36c330: the view showed "This view source cannot configure." and "This view source cannot reset.". Green after the fix. The cli, cli-media, signals, and optional tests (48) pass.
  • tsc --noEmit, oxlint, and oxfmt --check pass for the changed files.
  • Not run locally: pnpm test:pr and E2E. CI runs them.

After the coding agent support (head 7adbb35df, after the merge of aceebf08a):

  • Unit tests of the changed files pass: @tanstack/ai-harness 350 (10 files), @tanstack/ai-code-mode 76, @tanstack/ai-mcp 22, @tanstack/ai-sandbox-docker 25, @tanstack/ai 11, @tanstack/ai-harness-cli 28.
  • test:types passes for ai, ai-harness, ai-harness-cli, ai-code-mode, ai-mcp, ai-skills, and ai-sandbox-docker, and tsc --noEmit passes for testing/e2e.
  • Each new test was checked against a broken copy of the code, and it failed there.
  • kiira check and pnpm test:docs pass for the changed docs pages.
  • The first CI run on 7adbb35df failed in the build of @tanstack/ai-code-mode-snippets (TS2883). 46136ef66 fixes it. The snippets build passes locally.

At 72837256c:

  • The full unit suites pass, in batches of 12 files with 2 workers: @tanstack/ai-harness (164 files), @tanstack/ai-code-mode (12), @tanstack/ai-mcp (36), @tanstack/ai-skills (10), and @tanstack/ai-harness-cli (8).
  • @tanstack/ai-sandbox-docker passes without its Docker daemon tests. One sbx.test.ts test (measures whether kill() stops the in-VM process) failed on this machine, because the sbx CLI is installed here. It does not use the changed code, and CI has no sbx CLI, so CI skips it.
  • test:types passes for the 7 changed packages and the 28 library packages that depend on them, and tsc --noEmit passes for testing/e2e.
  • kiira check docs/harness docs/sandbox passes (235 snippets), and pnpm test:docs passes.
  • My commits add no oxlint finding, and oxfmt is clean on the 74 changed files.
  • Not run locally: E2E (Playwright) and the Docker daemon tests. CI runs them.

Proof run with a real model (claude-sonnet-5-5, a scratch script against the built packages, through runCli({ ui })): a temp git repo with a bug. The ctx.logger line reached the host logger. view.updateThreadSettings() gave no error notice. Two QuickJS programs ran: external_read_file ran with no question, and external_edit_file made the program wait on the approval question, then ran after once. FileChanged carried the right patch. The bash approval showed tool=bash with its args (after 787718a82), approve({ payload: 'always' }) ran it and saved { tool: 'bash', resource: 'node --test', decision: 'allow' }, and node --test passed. Not proved in that run: the Docker copy (no Docker on the machine) and a snapshots() event for a bash write (the E2E spec covers it).

CI on 72837256c: E2E passes (4 of 4 shards, with the new specs). Test and Coverage failed only in @tanstack/ai-vertex: after the merge of main, the lockfile gave ai-vertex a second copy of @google/genai (with the zod@4.6.5 peer), so the vi.mock in its tests missed the copy of ai-gemini. 139898034 fixes the lockfile as on main: pnpm install --frozen-lockfile accepts it, ai-vertex passes 12 of 12, and ai-gemini 435. Preview builds, and its publish step to pkg.pr.new fails with 404 ("There is no workflow defined"), which is the preview service setup.

After the fixes 228d9c108 and 142b8f239:

  • packages/ai-harness/tests/view.test.ts: "ready settles with an error notice when the session is already closed" and "ready settles when the reads of the first load throw at once". Red on b2e7502cc: ready rejected with "This handle is closed. Call host.open again." Green after the fix. The 5 view test files (137 tests) pass.
  • packages/ai-sandbox-docker/tests/resume.test.ts: 3 tests with a fake Docker client, so no daemon runs. Red on b2e7502cc: 2 failed, because resume() gave null. Green after the fix. With local-source.test.ts, 16 tests pass.
  • test:types passes for ai-harness and ai-sandbox-docker. oxlint and oxfmt --check pass for the changed files.

After the fixes 81cada2b6, b6ca70836, and 79a946689:

  • coding-snapshots.test.ts: "/undo and /redo send FileChanged for each file that they put back" and "revert and unrevert send FileChanged for each file that they put back". Red on b2e7502cc (no events), green after. With snapshots.test.ts, 49 tests pass.
  • recovery.test.ts: 3 new tests that hold a turn after its start and close the host as recoverable. Red on b2e7502cc: the model got [], or the turn was settled and the model never ran. Green after. These pass with durable-joins, durable-inputs, resume-pending, input-sender, and human-handoff (129 tests), and with 18 more session test files.
  • resume-edges.test.ts fails on b2e7502cc without these fixes too. After 79a946689, 6 of 6 pass.
  • test:types passes for ai-harness. oxlint shows only warnings on lines that these commits did not change. oxfmt --check and pnpm test:docs pass.
  • The coding-tools E2E spec has a new /undo case. It typechecks. CI runs it.
  • No E2E for the quit before the first model call: Playwright cannot stop a host at that exact moment.
  • An app built on this PR runs its 280 tests and its store conformance against this branch with these fixes.

Manual test for fix A:

  1. Open a session with permissions() and let the model call a tool that asks, for example read_file on .env.
  2. Make a view with createSessionView(session) and call approval.approve({ payload: 'always' }).
  3. Before the fix, the turn fails with "payload is invalid". After the fix, the call runs, and /permissions lists the saved rule.

Manual test.

  1. Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-harness test:lib.
  2. Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e --grep harness.
  3. Open docs/harness/overview.md and run its sample with an OpenAI key. The text streams through onEvent('TEXT_MESSAGE_CONTENT', ...).

How this PR makes testing easy.

  • Unit tests in packages/ai-harness/tests, packages/ai-skills/tests/harness.test.ts, and packages/ai-acp/tests.
  • packages/ai-harness/tests/on-event.test.ts and session-media.test.ts cover the event callbacks.
  • packages/ai-harness/tests/send.test.ts covers send() modes and to. The fix pass added cases to durable-inputs, interrupt-resolve, live-commands, resume, fork, feed, plugins, harness-text, and the ACP and skills tests.
  • packages/ai-persistence/tests/load-child-transcript.test.ts covers the child transcript.
  • packages/ai/tests/byok.test.ts covers the credential store, the tenant fallback, and storedProviderKeys.
  • The two E2E specs above.

After the fifth-list fixes (head 41aff075e): the changed test files pass. That is 17 files and 396 tests in @tanstack/ai-harness, plus the changed files in @tanstack/ai, @tanstack/ai-persistence (with the new slow-store conformance run), and @tanstack/ai-client. Each fix agent also ran the tests of the source files it changed. test:types passes for all 21 changed packages. test:oxlint passes for the 9 changed core packages, and oxfmt is clean on the changed files. Not run locally: the full suites, E2E, coverage, knip, and test:docs. CI runs them. These fixes add no new E2E spec.

After the fifth-list asks (head b9c25109c, rebased on the merge of main): every changed package builds. test:types passes for ai, ai-harness, ai-persistence, ai-compaction, ai-sandbox, and ai-client, and test:oxlint passes for the first five. The changed test files pass (ai 3, ai-harness 15, ai-sandbox 2, ai-compaction 1), plus the interrupt, subagent, persistence conformance, recovery, session, log, and erase tests again after the rebase. Not run locally: the full suites, E2E, coverage, knip, and test:docs. CI runs them.

After the B13 rework and the merge of main with #1880 (head 9436245dc): test:types passes for ai, openai-base, ai-anthropic, and ai-harness. The Responses replay, structured-output, run-error, and Anthropic adapter tests pass. The E2E failure on 9ae0147da (responses-answer-items-wire) came from the first B13 fix. CI checks the new head.

Risk / rollback

Low for existing users. The harness is a new package. The persistence part adds only optional stores, and removes the 'expired' inbox status that nothing produced. @tanstack/ai gains one optional binding field, one empty interface, and new byok exports. Nothing existing in byok changes. The skills and ACP parts add new entry points and do not change what those packages already export. To undo, revert the PR.

Public API change

Before

// No @tanstack/ai-harness on main.

After

import { createHarnessHost, defineHarness } from '@tanstack/ai-harness'
import { defineAgent } from '@tanstack/ai'

const worker = defineAgent({
  name: 'worker',
  description: 'Reserves a slot',
  run: async (ctx) => ctx.harness.step.do('reserve', () => 'R-1'),
})

const host = createHarnessHost()
const session = await host.open(defineHarness({ name: 'acme', adapter, agents: [worker] }), {
  threadId: 'thread-1',
})

const turn = session.send('Hello!')
turn.onEvent('TEXT_MESSAGE_CONTENT', ({ event }) => process.stdout.write(event.delta))
turn.onMedia(({ media }) => console.log(`${media.kind} saved: ${media.name}`))
const { text, media } = await turn

await session.send('Keep it short.', { mode: 'steer' }) // ends with the turn it joined
const run = session.agents.worker.start()
await session.send('Use slot 2.', { to: run.id })

await host.sessions.rename({ threadId: 'thread-1', title: 'Greeting' })

// Keys and sign-ins: your own table or a secrets manager.
const credentials = memoryCredentialStore() // from '@tanstack/ai/byok/server'
const keyedHost = createHarnessHost({ credentials })
const keys = storedProviderKeys(credentials, { userId: 'u1' }) // plain chat() routes too

Added by the fifth-list fixes (new options, so there is no "before"):

defineHarness({ name: 'acme', adapter, subagents: { background: false } })
createHarnessHandler({ host, harness, media: { secret, urlTtlMs: 5 * 60_000 } })
WorkspaceHooks.item({ beforeWrite: async (path) => (path.endsWith('.gen.ts') ? { refuse: 'Generated file.' } : undefined) })
conversationSummarizer({ adapter, middleware: [logCalls] })
const view = await host.observe(harness, { threadId, user })
const outcome = await view.settled({ inputId })

Added by the fifth-list asks:

createHarnessHost({ acceptInput: (input, { user }) => (tooBig(input) ? { refuse: 'too_big' } : input) })
definePlugin({ name: 'acme/budget', setup: () => ({ adapter: () => ({ adapter: cheapModel, override: true }) }) })
defineHarness({ name: 'acme', adapter, turn: { onModelError: ({ retries }) => (retries < 2 ? { retry: true, adapter: backup } : undefined) } })
const { structured } = await session.send('Plan the trip.', { outputSchema: z.object({ days: z.number() }) })
await host.sessions.archive({ threadId, user })
await host.sessions.eraseUser({ harness, threadId, userId: 'bob', replies: 'keep', user })
const sandbox = context.get(SandboxCapability) // inside a server tool

Added by the coding agent support (new options and exports, so there is no "before"):

import { ConsoleLogger } from '@tanstack/ai'
import { createHarnessHost, definePlugin } from '@tanstack/ai-harness'
import { FileChanged } from '@tanstack/ai-harness/plugins/coding'
import { codeMode } from '@tanstack/ai-code-mode/harness'
import { localSource, defineWorkspace } from '@tanstack/ai-sandbox'
import { dockerSandbox } from '@tanstack/ai-sandbox-docker'

const host = createHarnessHost({ persistence, logger: new ConsoleLogger() })
definePlugin({ name: 'acme/x', setup: (ctx) => (ctx.logger.warn('...'), {}) })
view.on(FileChanged, ({ path, change, patch }) => render(path, change, patch))
codeMode({ driver, include: (tool) => tool.name !== 'question', directCalls: 'keep' })
await dockerSandbox({ image: 'node:24' }).create({
  workspace: defineWorkspace({ source: localSource(process.cwd()) }),
})

PermissionCallCapability (from @tanstack/ai-harness) and core SubagentBinding.debug are new too.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to dab3f

Several issues remain before merge. Background store failures can crash the host. Command calls can hang. A wake turn can run under the wrong user. Some skills features are incomplete. Editor (ACP) clients can also open sessions that belong to other harnesses, as well as child sessions. Resolve or explicitly accept these before merging.

Coverage

✅ Coverage held across 72 compared package(s).

Each package is measured twice in this job — on this PR and on its merge-base with main — and compared. A metric fails only when it is at or above 60% on the merge-base and under 60% on this PR. Other drops are listed but do not fail. Packages your PR doesn't affect are not measured and not listed.

Review comments at @packages/ai-harness/src/resume.ts:
- Around line 97-103: Update the interval callback in the resume flow around
renew so it catches rejected renewal promises. In the subscribe listener in Log,
catch rejections from this.enqueue(() => this.catchUp()) as well; handle both
failures without allowing background store errors to become unhandled
rejections. Affected sites: packages/ai-harness/src/resume.ts lines 97-103 —
catch renew’s rejection; packages/ai-harness/src/log.ts lines 730-732 — catch
the enqueued catchUp rejection.

Review comments at @packages/ai-harness/src/session/turn-parts.ts:
- Line 170: In the tool wrapper’s execute function, capture this.sender() when
the tool call starts and pass that sender as the principal to pluginApi when the
detached work completes and queues its wake note. Keep the existing wake
behavior and note text unchanged.

Review comments at @packages/ai-harness/src/session/turn.ts:
- Line 86: Handle rejections from the fire-and-forget executeCommand call so
command operations cannot remain unsettled or produce unhandled rejections. In
the call site, catch failures, skip operations that are already settled,
otherwise fail the operation using the existing logFailure value when available
and publish its completion with publishFinished.

The wake turn of a detached tool runs as whoever is the sender at the moment the job ends, not as the user who started it.

this.pluginApi() has no principal, so note(..., { wake: true }) queues the follow-up with this.sender(). A detached job can finish much later. By then another user's turn may be running, or no turn runs and the session opener is used. In both cases the wake turn runs with that person's credentials and provider keys. This breaks the rule that background agents follow (input-sender.test.ts checks that a wake turn runs as the person who started the agent). Record the sender when the tool call starts and use that principal for the note.

Review comment at @packages/ai-harness/src/session/turn-parts.ts at line 170:
In the tool wrapper’s execute function, capture this.sender() when the tool call
starts and pass that sender as the principal to pluginApi when the detached work
completes and queues its wake note. Keep the existing wake behavior and note
text unchanged.

ToolExecutionContext gets optional get and getOptional, the same
accessors as the middleware context. chat() fills them from the run's
capabilities, so a server tool can call ctx.get(SandboxCapability)
under withSandbox. Harness turns keep them on the tool context.
WorkspaceBackend file methods (readFile, writeFile, stat, realpath,
readdir, remove, readLines) take an optional { signal }. The workspace
tools give each file call the abort signal of the tool call.
sandboxWorkspaceBackend passes it to the sandbox file system and to the
commands of the call. hostBackend uses it for readFile, writeFile and
readLines.
…unctions of the model

Each limit takes a number or a function ({ model }) => number. The
function runs once for each model call, and the checkpoint key holds
the value for that call. A plain number works as before. The check that
atTokens is below maxTokens runs at creation only when both are numbers.
The session log fold now keeps two lists: the model context, which
addRecordsToModelContext changes, and the transcript that readers see.
A record that adds messages at the end (a signal) goes to both lists. A
record that rewrites earlier messages (a compaction) changes only the
model context.

- session.transcript(), host.observe, GET transcript, the chat
  hydration, agentTranscript and logMessageStore read the transcript.
- replaceTranscript, revert and logMessageStore saves write in
  transcript positions.
- appliedAt, turnText and recovery use transcript positions, so a
  compaction in a turn does not move them.
- Snapshots keep the transcript when it differs (version 6). Version 5
  snapshots still load.
Add archived to SessionIndexEntry and withArchived to the list options.
Lists leave archived entries out by default. host.sessions.archive and
unarchive set and clear the flag with the configure action, and the
handler and client.sessions expose both. A delete still finds archived
child threads.
chat({ outputSchema, stream: true }) now runs the same Standard Schema
check as the Promise path. A value that fails it is not sent as
structured-output.complete. The stream ends with RUN_ERROR
structured-output-validation-failed, and the model text is on
metadata.tanstack.rawText (parse failures get it too). A plain JSON
Schema is still not checked.
session.send(message, { outputSchema }) passes the schema to the turn's
chat() call. The result gets a typed structured value. A failed check
fails the turn and settles the input with the chat() code and rawText.
The schema is per send and in memory only: HTTP does not take it, a
joined steer ignores it, and a recovered turn runs without it and warns.
host.sessions.eraseUser replaces each message of a user with a
[removed] placeholder that keeps its id and role, and with
replies: 'remove' also the answers to it. It logs a harness.erase
record, writes a snapshot at the head, and truncates the records
before it, so no new LogStore method is needed. It deletes the media
of those messages, needs the new erase access action, and refuses
while the thread is busy. Joined steers now keep the id of their
input, so the erase finds their sender.
…Store

Export the union of the records that the harness logs, and show a
LogStore wrapper that encrypts the records and the snapshot, with the
rule that it must give back on read exactly what it got on write.
…essage with no reasoning item"

This reverts commit addd7b9.
… reasoning item

The first B13 fix dropped msg_ and fc_ ids from every message with no
reasoning item. That broke a same-model replay of an answer whose model
call sent no reasoning (#1726). The Responses adapter now marks a message
whose model call sent a reasoning item (metadata.tanstack.reasoningItem),
and a replay drops the ids only when that mark is set and the reasoning
item is missing.
The sync added eleven_text_to_sound_v3, which the ElevenLabs SDK types
do not list, and removed models that tests and docs used.
