Continue Bedrock compatibility work after stack-v0.4.1, covering world resources, interactions, fonts, skins, movement, rendering, and picking.

Resolve legacy fog bindings and pack-defined defaults, apply native Overworld day/night modulation, and honor the daylight-cycle rule for explicit clocks. Combined blindness and night vision use the native tick-based blend, with attenuated night-vision strength and gain capped at 255. Server legacy biome bindings retain unqualified names across world versions. GUI bitmap sampling preserves native texel-boundary pixels without changing Unicode's linear path. Each correction stays in its owning patch.

Validation includes passing core, converter, and add-on suites, core Checkstyle, the full patch replays, and the rebuilt bundle. Native 26.60 Fancy controls cover fog inheritance, all 19 vision-expiry steps, and remote current/1.20.0/current biome-name admission. Direct and ViaProxy recordings confirm the advertised resource contexts and settled fog behavior.

At 1280 × 720, all 16 current-font labels match native UI scales 1 and 2; all 16 legacy labels match scale 2. Four fresh direct/proxy sessions pass 40 native comparisons and 48 scale/reload/route consistency checks. The focused GPU regression fails with the previous shader and passes on Intel and software rendering. Recordings exit normally and temporary packs and settings are restored.

A native free-camera fixture keeps players five blocks apart while the original persona atlases remain bound through 120 camera blocks. Rapid profile requests receive server echoes at Java while native draws retain previous bindings. Delivery to the native observer remains unverified; these controls do not establish a distinct LOD switch.

Broader viewports, TrueType comparisons, spatial fog blending, timed command transitions, other effect combinations and media, directional sunrise tint, sky sampling, and other native gaps remain open in docs/bedrock-coverage.md. Upstream ViaBedrock PR #465 stays separate.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Resource-pack selection now follows the world’s base-game version, including supported built-in resources and legacy fog settings.
    • Fog settings from commands, biomes, and resource packs now work together, with command settings taking priority. Empty command updates preserve world fog defaults.
    • World clocks retain pause behavior across time updates and daylight-cycle changes, including independent named clocks.
    • Supported Bedrock sessions use classic lighting, including Overworld and Nether effects, and native-style End sky rendering.
    • End fog distance responds to a living dragon and render distance.
    • Native-style UI scenes, HUD elements, actor portraits, and font rendering are supported, with a desktop UI-scale adjustment.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Air fog colors inherit pack-defined defaults when a biome has no explicit color.
    • Blindness attenuates Night Vision and fog color together.
    • All 16 current-font labels match native UI scales 1 and 2.

The biome loader only reads modern per-biome files, while FogStorage selects minecraft:fog_default directly. Mojang still loads legacy server-pack biome files and uses their default entry beneath biome fog. Keep this concrete gap visible while native rendering comparisons continue.

The changes update version-aware biome fog resolution and snapshot transport, Overworld clock tracking, and client-side Bedrock vision and fog rendering. They also update bitmap-font sampling and revise coverage and validation notes for fonts, skins, fog, and related behavior.

Changes: Fog resources and transport

Layer / File(s) Summary
Version-aware legacy fog bindings
patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0068-resolve-licensed-native-image-fallbacks.patch, patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0068-resolve-licensed-native-image-fallbacks.pr.md
Legacy biome fog loads according to pack type and base-game version. Bindings support inheritance and clearing, and composed fog definitions resolve in order. Tests cover inheritance, clearing, and version cutoffs.
Pack-defined air fog defaults
patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0070-inherit-native-air-fog-defaults.patch, patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0070-inherit-native-air-fog-defaults.pr.md
Air fog uses the biome’s explicit color, then the resolved pack default, then #ABD2FF. The synthetic the_void biome uses the same selection. Water fog remains separate.
Resolved fog snapshots
patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0104-transport-resolved-native-fog-stacks.patch, patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0104-transport-resolved-native-fog-stacks.pr.md, patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0039-apply-native-command-stacks-to-dry-air.patch, patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0039-apply-native-command-stacks-to-dry-air.pr.md
Fog definitions include colors and distance settings. FogStorage resolves resource-pack bindings and defaults, and channel negotiation publishes snapshots. The client applies snapshot values to fog rendering. Tests cover resource composition and snapshot behavior.
Fog behavior and comparison coverage
docs/bedrock-coverage.md, patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0104-transport-resolved-native-fog-stacks.pr.md
The coverage table records implemented fog behavior and remaining comparisons. The patch notes describe the version-2 payload contract and validation scope.

Bedrock world-clock tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Clock projection and daylight-cycle handling
patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0014-initialize-and-preserve-bedrock-clock-time.patch, patches/viabedrock/upstreamable/0014-initialize-and-preserve-bedrock-clock-time.pr.md
WorldClockTracker projects legacy and explicit clock updates from stored samples and client-tick anchors. The daylight-cycle rule pauses and resumes the Overworld clock while retaining its wire pause state. Other named clocks remain independent. Tests cover initialization, syncs, and rule changes.

Bedrock client rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classic lightmap and blindness dimming
patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0014-reproduce-the-native-bedrock-classic-lightmap.patch, patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0014-reproduce-the-native-bedrock-classic-lightmap.pr.md
For the specified Overworld air-fog and Night Vision path, squared remaining Blindness visibility attenuates both fog color and Night Vision strength. Other fog paths remain unchanged.
Command fog and End-sky rendering
patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0039-apply-native-command-stacks-to-dry-air.patch, patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0039-apply-native-command-stacks-to-dry-air.pr.md
The client applies resolved fog colors and distances, modulates Overworld fog color by clock time, and applies the End dragon distance rule. The patch also adds End-sky texture handling and resource cleanup.

Native UI bitmap-font sampling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bitmap-font sampling and regression coverage
patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0029-share-native-ui-scene-rendering.patch, patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0029-share-native-ui-scene-rendering.pr.md
Bitmap-font rendering uses nearest-even n.8 texel addressing and integer texel fetch when smoothing is disabled. The GPU regression tests boundary samples; the validation notes report matches for all 16 labels at UI scales 1 and 2.

Skin comparison notes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Skin validation and remaining comparisons
docs/skin-flow.md, patches/viafabricplus-bedrock/upstreamable/0002-native-entities-and-skins.pr.md
The notes record observations for selected appearances and rapid profile changes. Other wardrobe categories, distinct LOD selection, and broader rendering comparisons remain open.

Limit the default-fog claim to legacy pack-defined bindings.

The related fog status record says the implementation retains the minecraft:fog_default registry fallback and lacks legacy pack-defined default bindings. “Data-driven defaults are not loaded” can incorrectly imply that no default is available. Replace it with “legacy pack-defined default bindings are not loaded” or equivalent.

Native 26.60 Fancy controls show that legacy biome fog overrides modern
bindings independently of pack order. Preserve inherited media and custom
data defaults, and restore modern bindings when a pack clears legacy fog.
Respect the vanilla legacy-file cutoff while retaining server bindings.

Fold resource selection, registry fallback, and resolved distance transport
into their owning patches. Keep the payload format unchanged and retain
focused composition and world-replacement tests.

All four projects build, with no core test failures or Checkstyle errors.
Live direct and ViaProxy comparisons for the new bindings remain open.

Keep legacy bindings unchanged when a pack fails to parse.

If a higher-priority biomes_client.json sets remove_all_prior_fog and contains a malformed biome entry, bindings.clear() removes valid lower-priority bindings before the later entry throws. The catch block logs the failure, but the removed bindings do not return. Parse into a temporary map and commit it only after the entire file succeeds. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep color-only fog overrides consistent.

FogDefinitions.parse stores a color even when the distance fields are incomplete. FogDefinitions.resolve merges colors and distances independently. A higher-priority air.fog_color can therefore update the biome registry color while FogStorage.snapshot retains the lower-priority FogState.Distance, including its older color.

Use the version-2 renderer’s priority rule for both outputs. The inspected repository does not define that rule, so no narrower code fix is safe here.

Test publication with the replacement resources.

A manual sendSnapshot() after swapping the mocked resources would test only that sendSnapshot() serializes the resources returned by user().get(ResourcePackStorage.class). It would not test an automatic replacement trigger, because the test invokes sendSnapshot() explicitly.

The replacement test currently calls snapshot(...) directly. Add a publication-level assertion with the replacement resource fixture, and rename the existing test so it does not claim to publish.

Rename the existing test that calls snapshot(...) directly so it describes
resolving, not publishing. Add a publication-level test around
FogStorage.sendSnapshot() that uses initial and replacement ResourcePackStorage
fixtures, then verifies the emitted FogState uses the replacement resources; do
not treat a manually invoked sendSnapshot() as testing an automatic replacement
trigger.

Direct and ViaProxy renderer controls now match native Fancy air colors and distances for inheritance, replacement, and modern fallback after clearing. Remove the completed comparison limit while retaining the unresolved rendering boundaries.
Modulate custom Overworld fog before vision processing and interpolate blindness expiry within each tick. Honor daylight-cycle changes for explicit clocks while preserving the wire pause flag and full time count.

Native 26.60 Fancy comparisons establish the correction. Fresh direct and ViaProxy recordings match the color controls, retain smooth expiry and immediate cancellation, and resume frozen clocks without a jump. Exact native timing and status-effect distance curves remain open.
Synchronized native color and distance captures show tick-based expiry. Attenuate night-vision strength with squared blindness visibility and bound normalization gain at 255, replacing the interpolation approximation.

All 19 native expiry steps agree at noon and midnight. Fresh direct and ViaProxy renderer samples match the captured curve, retain the native distance ladder, and restore ordinary fog immediately on cancellation. Keep the correction in the owning lighting patch and update its bounded validation notes.
Native current/1.20.0/current controls admit unqualified server legacy biome keys. Four direct and ViaProxy recordings confirm the advertised world context and matching settled fog selection, resolving the previous admission uncertainty.

Keep spatial blending and timed command transitions explicit as separate limits. Replay the full core stack after updating the owning commit explanation and verify that its source tree remains identical.

Handle invalid base-game versions through the packet error path.

BaseGameVersion.parse(...) can throw IllegalArgumentException for malformed RESOURCE_PACK_STACK data. The call occurs before the try blocks around finishStack, so the exception can leave the handler without calling kickForIllegalState.

Suggested fix

Handle IllegalArgumentException from BaseGameVersion.parse in the
RESOURCE_PACK_STACK handler before the finishStack try blocks; route it through
BedrockProtocol.kickForIllegalState and return so malformed version data follows
the packet error path.

Comment thread docs/bedrock-coverage.md Resolved
A matching native and Java GPU draw isolates a missing accent pixel to
float interpolation landing below a texel boundary. Quantize point-sampled
GUI atlas coordinates before fetching the integer texel, preserving the
linear Unicode path and avoiding normalized-coordinate round trips.

Fold the correction into the existing UI patch with one GPU regression
that fails on the previous shader. Record bounded native, direct, proxy,
scale, and reload results without claiming broader font parity.
A free camera extends native GPU binding checks without crossing the
server's player-tracking boundary. Original persona atlases remain bound
at 120 camera blocks with the players still five blocks apart.

Keep rapid profile replacement and distinct LOD selection unverified:
Java receives the requested server echoes while the native observer keeps
its previous bindings, but native packet delivery is not yet recorded.
Retain the captures and investigation details in private research storage.
