Why

Snapchain 0.15.0 (tag and image 23 Oct) activated protocol V21/V22 on mainnet at 2026-10-23 12:00 UTC. Nodes on 0.14.3 stop on shards 1 and 2. Both of ours were stuck at shard 1 height 49477354, about 75k blocks behind; snap.farcaster.xyz runs 0.15.0.

What changes

  • Node: Snapchain is pinned to 0.15.0 in infra/node-setup.sh, scripts/devnet-compose.yml, README.md and the two "pinned to" sentences in site/index.html. The tutorial's sample output and docs/evidence/* stay as they are: they record real runs.
  • Upgrade in place: re-running ./outpost node on a 0.14.3 node fetches the compose file again from the v0.15.0 tag, pulls the image and recreates only the snapchain container. The data stays and the snapshot is not loaded again. Upstream's compose file and validators.toml are identical between v0.14.3 and v0.15.0 apart from the image tag.
  • Client (src/core/verify.ts, used by the CLI and the web client): 0.15.0 adds format_version (field 9) and chain (field 10) to CastAddBody, and its HTTP API returns them as formatVersion and chain. @farcaster/core 0.20.0, the latest on npm, does not have them, so the client encoded such casts without them and dropped them as altered. verify.ts now encodes both fields itself, in both byte forms apps produce, and carries them into the rebuilt message. A node still cannot add, drop or change them.
  • A cast id's fid (a chain's root, a parent cast) must now be a plain integer. Before, "1234" or 1234.9 encoded to the signed 1234 and reached callers. An independent review found this.

Tested for real

  • Test server outpost-shrink2 (DigitalOcean, synced from the snapshot on 0.14.3, stuck): re-ran ./outpost node with this node-setup.sh at 02:43 UTC on 25 Oct. Shards 1 and 2 moved straight away and their delay fell about 4.6 blocks/s. The 557 GB of data was kept.
  • Society node fcprize-node: image tag changed to 0.15.0 and only the snapchain service recreated. Shards 1 and 2 are moving, and the gate still returns 401 without a token.
  • Casts: I scanned all 6171 casts on shards 1 and 2 since the fork, through snap.farcaster.xyz /v1/events.
    • None carries formatVersion or chain yet.
    • 15 are 10k casts, up to 10000 bytes. All 15 pass, before and after this change.
    • Snapchain's own cast_add_chain_part conformance vector is reported altered by main and passes here.
  • Fixtures (test/fixtures/snapchain-0.15.0-casts.json): three of those real 10k casts and the conformance vector.
  • Tests: the new tests cover tampering (adding, dropping or changing either field, root fid tricks), the first cast of a chain, an empty chain, a multi-byte formatVersion, and a chained cast written the @farcaster/core way. The new tests fail when the encoding is reverted.
  • Checks: typecheck, npm test (118 of 118 pass), build, test/providers.sh, test/watchdog.sh and shellcheck all pass.

Not done: the web client shows formatVersion: 1 (article Markdown) as plain text and doesn't group chains. That would need a product decision.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for verifying Snapchain 0.15 cast messages, including article format versions and chained casts. Cast signatures are checked with these fields included, and malformed cast identifiers are flagged as altered.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of cast identifiers, including rejecting fractional or invalid FIDs during verification.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the documented and default Snapchain version to 0.15.0. The devnet and node setup now use the same version.

Snapchain 0.15.0 activated protocol V21/V22 on mainnet on 2026-10-23 12:00 UTC. Nodes on 0.14.3
stop on shards 1 and 2 (both of ours stuck at shard 1 height 49477354). Pin 0.15.0 in
node-setup.sh, the devnet compose file, the README and the tutorial. Re-running ./outpost node
on a 0.14.3 node upgrades it in place: the compose file is fetched again from the v0.15.0 tag,
the image pulled, the snapchain container recreated and the data kept (done on a real server).

0.15.0 also adds format_version (field 9) and chain (field 10) to CastAddBody, and its HTTP API
returns them as formatVersion and chain. @farcaster/core 0.20.0, the latest on npm, does not
know them, so the client re-encoded such casts without them and dropped them as altered.
verify.ts now encodes both fields itself, in both byte forms, and carries them into the
rebuilt message, so a node still cannot add, drop or change them.

Fixtures: three real mainnet 10k casts from after the fork (10000, 2041 and 1028 bytes; they
passed before too) and Snapchain's own cast_add_chain_part conformance vector. No mainnet cast
with the new fields existed yet.

MessageData.fromJSON turns "1234" or 1234.9 into 1234, so the hash still matched and callers got
a value nobody signed: the new chain root's fid, and a parent cast's fid since before. Found by
an independent review of the previous commit. Also covers the first cast of a chain, a present
but empty chain and a multi-byte formatVersion.

Walkthrough

Outpost updates its default and documented Snapchain version to 0.15.0. Cast message handling adds optional format and chain fields, and verification includes these fields when validating and rebuilding signed messages.

Changes: Snapchain 0.15 support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update Snapchain version references
README.md, infra/node-setup.sh, scripts/devnet-compose.yml, site/index.html
The documented and configured Snapchain image version changes from 0.14.3 to 0.15.0.
Represent and verify v0.15 cast fields
src/core/hub.ts, src/core/verify.ts
The cast message shape adds optional formatVersion and chain fields. Verification validates and encodes these fields when hashing and rebuilding cast messages. FID validation rejects values that are not safe, non-negative integers.
Validate v0.15 cast verification
test/fixtures/snapchain-0.15.0-casts.json, test/verify.test.ts
Fixtures and tests cover v0.15 messages, round trips, altered fields, alternate encodings, and invalid cast FIDs.
