Shrink: start small, size up for the first sync, shrink once synced - #1
Loading the snapshot needs about 32 GB of RAM; a synced node used about 3 GB (fcprize-node, 21 Oct). The node used to stay on the 32 GB plan forever, which is $168 of a ~$288/month bill on DigitalOcean.
What changes
provision makes the server small: DigitalOcean s-2vcpu-8gb-amd, Hetzner ccx13 (--small-size to change).
node sizes it up to s-8vcpu-32gb-amd / ccx33 before the snapshot load. CPU and RAM only (no --resize-disk; hcloud --keep-disk), so the disk stays small enough to go back down.
New ./outpost shrink (with --dry-run, --yes): once status says synced, shuts the server down cleanly (power-off after 3 min if it ignores that), resizes, starts it, waits for the node. Same IP, firewall, volume and society members. ~$0.41/h → ~$0.23/h on DigitalOcean.
It refuses before sync, with OUTPOST_HOST, and on servers it did not make small. Servers made by older versions (like fcprize-node, 400 GB boot disk) cannot shrink.
A shrink that stopped halfway is finished by running it again. A resize the provider refuses starts the server again on its old plan.
node-setup caps the Snapchain log at 3 x 50 MB: it grew ~0.9 GB/day on fcprize-node, which would fill a 100 GB disk in months.
Real shrink test: PASS (DigitalOcean fra1, server outpost-shrink2, 24–25 Oct, watchdog on)
Provisioned 21:08 UTC on 8 GB; node sized up to 32 GB and loaded the snapshot (557 GB). Catch-up stalled at the Snapchain V21/V22 fork (0.14.3); upgraded in place to 0.15.0 at 02:43 by re-running ./outpost node (data kept), synced 07:10.
Right before the shrink (32 GB plan): host used 2508 MB of 32095, Snapchain container 1.42 GiB, swap 0, data volume 557 GB.
./outpost shrink (dry-run first): 07:11:01 → 07:13:14, no manual help, node offline about 1.5 min. Now s-2vcpu-8gb-amd, same IP, same volume attached, firewall unchanged. Synced again 07:13:49.
4 h on 8 GB (07:13 → 11:13, 48 samples every 5 min): synced in all 48 (max shard delay 6 blocks), host used 958 MB at start → peak 1423 MB of 7941 (Snapchain 826 MiB at peak), swap 0 throughout, RestartCount 0 (StartedAt unchanged), OOMKilled false, 0 OOM lines in dmesg / journalctl -k.
./outpost destroy deleted droplet, volume, firewall, tag and SSH key in 23 s; the account lists show only what was there before.
Cost of the run: about $5.0 (32 GB ~10 h $2.50, 8 GB ~4 h $0.25, 1.2 TB volume ~14 h $2.27).
test/providers.sh: 4 new blocks (both providers), all pass, also under macOS bash 3.2. Mutation checks: dropping --keep-disk or the synced check makes them fail. test/watchdog.sh, shellcheck, typecheck, 113 unit tests and build pass.
Real DigitalOcean, 21 Oct: sizing up (shutdown 4 s, resize 14 s, power-on 10 s). 24–25 Oct: the full shrink run above.
Not tested for real: anything on Hetzner.
Blind verify-impl: PARTIAL. It found 3 interrupted-shrink gaps, fixed in ea907bf with tests; its own probes were blocked by the sandbox.
Loading the snapshot needs about 32 GB of RAM, but a synced node uses about
3 GB. provision now makes the server small (DigitalOcean s-2vcpu-8gb-amd,
Hetzner ccx13), node sizes it up (s-8vcpu-32gb-amd, ccx33) before the load,
and the new ./outpost shrink takes it back down once status says synced.
Only CPU and RAM change: the disk stays the small plan's, which is what lets
the server go back down (no provider shrinks a disk). The data is on the
volume; address, firewall and society members stay.
shrink refuses before sync, on servers it did not make small and with
OUTPOST_HOST; a refused resize starts the server again on its old plan.
node-setup caps the node's log at 3 x 50 MB: it grew 0.9 GB a day on
fcprize-node, which would fill a small server's disk within months.

A blind review found three gaps. A shrink stopped after the resize left the
server off, and a second shrink said "already small" without starting it.
One stopped after the shutdown left a big server off, so a second shrink
asked the unreachable node whether it was synced and refused. And a shrink
the provider refused still counted as done, so status stopped pointing to
it. Now a second shrink starts a server left off, skips the synced check
when a shrink already passed it, and a refused resize clears the record.
Tests for all three; the suite also passes under macOS bash 3.2.

README and site: the server starts small, node sizes it up for the
snapshot load, shrink takes it back down once synced; about $0.41/h while
it syncs, $0.23/h after. Sizing up ran on a real DigitalOcean server on
21 October (output on the site, about a minute offline). shrink has only
run against the simulated providers, and Hetzner sizing is untested; both
say so. Servers made by older versions cannot shrink.

outpost
Walkthrough
Outpost now provisions servers on small plans, resizes them for node setup, and provides a shrink command for synced nodes. The resize flow preserves the server disk. Setup also applies a Snapchain log cap, and the provider tests and documentation cover the updated lifecycle.

Summary
Provision small, resize for sync outpost, test/fake-providers/doctl, test/fake-providers/hcloud, README.md, site/index.html
Provisioning records small and sync plans and creates servers on the small plan. node resizes provisioned servers to the sync plan before setup. Provider fakes model plan, status, and disk behavior. The provisioning documentation describes the size transition.
Node setup and sync progress infra/node-setup.sh, outpost, test/fake-providers/ssh, README.md, site/index.html
Setup applies and verifies a three-file, 50 MB Snapchain log cap. node and status show a shrink hint when progress is synced. The SSH fake supports setup and progress responses.
The new shrink command checks server ownership and sync progress, resizes to the recorded small plan, and tracks completion. Provider tests cover resize and interruption cases. The documentation describes the command, limitations, and pricing.

Wait for cloud-init to finish before node resizes the server.
cmd_node calls resize_server before it checks whether first boot has finished. resize_server shuts the server down and does not wait for cloud-init. cmd_provision prints next: ./outpost node even with --no-wait, so the server can be resized while still booting. A shutdown during first boot can stop cloud-init before it writes /var/lib/outpost-ready. Then wait_for_ssh fails after 10 minutes.
Do not gate the resize on that marker alone. wait_for_ssh succeeds only when the marker exists. If the marker never appears, the proposed check would stop ./outpost node before the resize on every rerun. Wait for cloud-init to report completion instead, retrying while SSH is unreachable, and only when the server is on. resize_server already powers on a stopped server and waits for SSH, so the off-server case needs no separate handling.

Fixed in 5b98e16: node now runs wait_for_ssh (which waits for cloud-init) before the resize. It returns at once when first boot is done, and resize_server already ends with the same wait, so this adds no new way to fail.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@Spider333 The new wait protects a running server during first boot. However, it adds a failure path for a stopped server.
wait_for_ssh now runs before resize_server can power on the server. If the server is off, ./outpost node waits 10 minutes and exits without reaching that recovery logic.
Also, wait_for_ssh still requires /var/lib/outpost-ready after cloud-init status --wait returns. Cloud-init completion alone does not satisfy the check.
Please wait for cloud-init completion only when the server is running. Keep stopped-server recovery in resize_server, and do not require the marker for the pre-resize check. This finding remains open.
