fix(frontend): confirm dialog focuses the safe action and is accessible - #763
Conversation
confirmDialog focuses Cancel for destructive dialogs (or when a caller passes initialFocus: 'cancel'), names the dialog via aria-labelledby / aria-describedby, and cycles focus backwards on Shift+Tab. The native confirm() calls in navigation (unsaved settings guard) and bulk add to group, and the native prompt() in registration reject, now use the styled dialog. dialog’s rendered focusable elements in DOM order, including body controls such
as the rejection-reason textarea, instead of cycling only through buttons;
update the Shift+Tab test to expect that order.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Handle subsequent Back events while confirmation is pending.
If the user presses Back twice while Admin settings are dirty, this handler opens two dialogs with different history targets. If the user stays in the second dialog and then confirms the first, switchTab shows the first target while the browser URL remains on Admin. Keep one pending navigation decision, or invalidate stale callbacks when a newer popstate arrives.

The only axe violation left inside the dialogs is color-contrast on the red confirm button (white on #ea4335, 3.92:1). That is pre-existing and tracked in #696.
No regressions
- 11 pages x 3 widths (Home, Opportunities, Plans, Purchases, 3 Inventory sub-tabs, Admin General/Purchasing/Users/Accounts) were pixel-diffed base vs head. 30 of 33 are 0.00%. Admin Accounts (0.03%) and Admin Purchasing (0.01%) differ only in mock timestamps that are generated from the current time (
12:43vs12:44). - Page-level axe results are identical on every page and width, and so are horizontal-overflow numbers. No console errors on either build.
Findings
- Medium: the reject-reason textarea is unreachable by keyboard (
frontend/src/confirmDialog.ts, Tab handler cycle[confirmBtn, cancelBtn, closeBtn];frontend/src/modules/registrations.tshandleReject).- The focus trap cycles over a hard-coded list of the three buttons. The textarea this PR adds to the dialog body is never in the cycle.
- Live: from the initial focus (Cancel), six Tab presses visit ×, Reject registration, Cancel, ×, Reject registration, Cancel.
#registration-reject-reasonis never focused. - The native
prompt()this replaces focused its input, so keyboard and screen-reader users lose the ability to give a reason. A mouse user can still click into it. - Fix: build the cycle from the dialog's focusable descendants, e.g.
dialog.querySelectorAll('button, [href], input, select, textarea, [tabindex]:not([tabindex="-1"])')filtered to enabled ones, instead of the fixed button list. Add a jest case with anHTMLElementbody containing a textarea. Optionally let the reject dialog put initial focus in the textarea: it is still safe, because Enter in a textarea inserts a newline and does not confirm.
- Nit: a double Back while the dialog is open stacks two dialogs.
- Each popstate now opens its own async dialog. Live: 2 dialogs are open at once; after two Escapes the app ends correctly on
/admin/general. Between the two Escapes, the URL reads/opportunitieswhile Admin is shown. - Base was also wrong here (it ended on
/opportunities), so this is not a regression. - Optional fix: keep a module-level pending promise in
confirmLeaveSettingsand return it while a dialog is already open.
- Each popstate now opens its own async dialog. Live: 2 dialogs are open at once; after two Escapes the app ends correctly on
- Nit: on the reject dialog,
aria-describedbyresolves to "Reason (optional)" (the whole body, which is just the label). Harmless. Pass a short sentence such as "The registrant will see this reason." above the field if you want a real description. - Nit:
reasonInput.style.width = '100%'adds another inline style (audit M8 / fix(frontend): undefined CSS custom properties and inline-styled MFA panels #745). A class or.modal-confirm-body textarea{width:100%}would keep it out of the TS.
Out of scope, noted for later PRs
- Focus position is not visible: the delete-dialog screenshots are pixel-identical between base and head even though focus moved from "Delete user" to "Cancel". That is audit M4 (focus ring), not this PR.
- CI at this SHA when reviewed: green except Playwright Chromium and Integration Tests, which were still running.

Tab now cycles every focusable in the dialog in DOM order, so the registration reject reason textarea is reachable. The textarea width moves from an inline style to a class. Refs #705 Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nter Destructive confirm dialogs now open with Cancel focused, so the specs that confirmed by pressing Enter (and asserted Confirm had focus) now click the action button and assert the safe-action focus. Refs #705 Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
