Summary

When a provider refuses a purchase, users now get a short category message and a reference instead of the provider's raw error text. The full error stays in the server log and in the stored row.

  • Summarizer (internal/purchase/errsummary.go): a closed set of categories, each with a fixed message: access denied, not available, limit reached, unknown. SummarizeProviderError classifies live errors by type (smithy ErrorCode, azcore.ResponseError, googleapi.Error, HTTP status), then by text. SanitizeStoredError rewrites stored strings only when they contain provider markers. It handles each "; "-joined segment separately, keeps the partial-run prefix, and leaves server-authored notes verbatim, so non-empty input gives non-empty output.
  • Execute responses (direct execute, run now, session approve): executeFailureError returns execution
failed:
(reference: execution
) and keeps the status codes and details keys, plus a new category key. The raw error is logged once. Token approve was already fixed-text and is unchanged.
  • Read side: sanitized on read, with stored data unchanged.
    • GET /api/history status_description for failed, partially completed and audit-gap rows. The ops hint is still computed from the raw text.
    • Purchase details error and recommendations[].error, sanitized on a copy.
    • The retry 409 failure_reason.
  • Duplicate-purchase warning (fix(purchases): a refused AWS purchase shows a viewport-tall toast, re-arms Execute, warns of a possible duplicate and counts as a purchase #1694 item 3): the "may already have bought" ops hint is dropped only when every rec's stored error is a definite provider refusal. Unknown outcomes, and mixed runs where any rec's outcome is unknown, keep it. RedriveUnsafe and retry eligibility are unchanged.

Out of scope, tracked in #1702: the RI exchange, Marketplace and Azure revoke error mappers. Also out of scope: the frontend parts of #1694 (follow-up PR).

Tests

  • TestProviderDenial_NeverReachesUserSurfaces: one realistic AWS UnauthorizedOperation string with a role ARN, an account ID (a fake 123456789012), a request ID and an encoded authorization blob. None of these appear in the execute 502 message or details, the history status_description/ops_hint, the purchase details error/recommendations[].error, or the retry 409 details.
  • These tests cover:
    • the partial-run and audit-loss execute branches;
    • the duplicate-hint gate: refused, unknown, mixed, and all refused;
    • the summarizer: typed and text samples, AWS/Azure/GCP strings, pass-through of every server-authored note, the partial-run prefix;
    • IsDefiniteStoredRefusal.
  • Fail-before: with the handler files reverted to main, the 4 new handler tests fail. The mixed-run case fails on the first version of the gate.
  • Mutations: each fix was reverted in turn (raw error returned, sanitize skipped, hint computed from sanitized text, gate removed, non-marker strings rewritten), and each revert makes a test fail.
  • Local, macOS: go test ./internal/api ./internal/purchase, go vet and golangci-lint (0 issues) pass.
  • One existing test asserted that the raw text (another account's ARN) was kept in the session-approve message. It now asserts the summary.

Closes #1688

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Purchase and execution errors now show clear, categorized messages instead of exposing provider-specific diagnostics, account identifiers, or other sensitive details.
    • Purchase details and execution history sanitize stored error text while preserving recognized status information and readable server-authored notes.
    • Failed execution history now omits the redrive hint only when every recommendation has a definite pre-send AWS refusal; other failure combinations retain the hint.

Purchase failure responses now use categorized, sanitized messages instead of exposing provider error text. Stored errors are sanitized when returned through history and purchase-detail APIs. History rows clear the duplicate-guard hint only for definite AWS pre-send refusals.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Linked issue #1688 has four coding requirements. (1) Category message with a reference: executeFailureError returns execution <id> failed: <category message> (reference: execution <id>). Categories are access denied, not available, limit reached, and unknown, defined in internal/purchase/errsummary.go. (2) Full provider error in the server log only: the raw error is logged once in handler_purchases.go. Stored rows keep the raw text. (3) Stored rows sanitized on read, with stored data unchanged: GET /api/history status_description, purchase details error and recommendations[].error (sanitized on a copy), and the retry 409 failure_reason are sanitized on read. (4) Surfaces: the execute response, history API fields, and the toast and status cell. The toast and status cell render the API response text (see purchase-execution-toast tests, which read API fields). No frontend file changes are in this PR, so the rendered text depends on the sanitized backend fields. The frontend rendering path for the failure toast was not read in full; the truncated output does not confirm it. Tests cover AWS, Azure, and GCP strings, partial-run and audit-loss branches, and a no-leak test for a realistic AWS denial. Known tradeoff: text not on the server-note allowlist shows the generic category message. This matches #1688 and is not a defect. Fixed-text sentinels are not reclassified from raw text in stored rows, so stored rows keep their existing content.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change to the history ops_hint duplicate-purchase warning is not required by #1688. In internal/api/handler_history.go, executionToHistoryRow clears OpsHint when every recommendation has a definite pre-send AWS refusal (IsDefiniteAWSRefusal in internal/purchase/errsummary.go). This changes when a user-visible duplicate-purchase warning appears. The PR description ties it to #1694 item 3 with 'Refs #1694'. #1694 is not a linked issue for this PR, and #1688 does not mention duplicate-purchase warnings. The associated tests (history_duplicate_hint_test.go and the duplicate-hint cases in purchase_failure_summary_test.go) cover only this gate. The rest of the PR (summarizer, execute responses, read-side sanitization, allowlist, and shared refusal-reason constants in manager.go) is connected to #1688. The RI exchange, Marketplace, and Azure revoke mappers are not changed here and are tracked in #1702.

Resolution

Remove the duplicate-purchase warning gate (the IsDefiniteAWSRefusal use in executionToHistoryRow, its tests, and related wording) from this PR and deliver it in a PR that links #1694. Alternatively, add #1694 as a directly linked issue whose requirements cover the gate, and reassess. Keep the ops hint computed from the raw stored text, as before, until that work lands.

Independent review (claude-darling, cold): CHANGES REQUESTED 7f97774

The AWS path is solid. The read side is wired on every surface I could find, and the raw text stays in the log and the stored row. Two gaps block a security fix like this: the sanitizer fails open, and the duplicate-warning gate judges "nothing bought" from keywords.

1. Blocking: the sanitizer fails open, so provider text without a marker reaches users verbatim, on the live path too

  • SanitizeStoredError rewrites only strings that contain a providerMarkers entry.
  • summarizeExecuteFailure (handler_purchases.go:553) sends every unknown-category live error through it, intending to pass server-authored refusals. So any provider error with no marker is returned raw in the execute, run-now and session-approve 502.
  • Concrete case: azidentity's AuthenticationFailedError (azidentity v1.15.0 errors.go:89-104) prints RESPONSE
: <status>, and the request line contains the tenant ID: POST https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant-id>/oauth2/v2.0/token.
    • A missing or misconfigured app registration (AADSTS700016) or tenant is an HTTP 400.
    • The markers only include response 401/403/404/429/5.
  • I ran a probe with that exact format at this SHA:
    • SanitizeStoredError returns it unchanged: tenant ID, application ID, Trace ID and Correlation ID all intact.
    • SummarizeProviderError returns unknown, so the execute fallback returns the raw text.
  • Fix direction: make the live fallback fail closed. Pass through only errors that are server-authored, recognised by sentinel or errors.Is on the server's own error vars, and give everything else the unknown category message. For stored strings, a positive allowlist of server notes is safer than a marker denylist. At minimum, add response 4, authentication failed, aadsts, login.microsoftonline.com and oauth2:.

2. Blocking: the duplicate-purchase gate drops the warning for a GCP purchase that may have gone through

  • IsDefiniteStoredRefusal decides only from keywords. At the provider pins in this SHA's go.mod, only the AWS provider marks unknown outcomes (purchasecfg.ClassifyPurchaseError); GCP and Azure never wrap ErrOutcomeUnknown.
  • In GCP computeengine/client.go:735-746, a failed op.Wait comes after Insert was accepted. It is stored as commitment creation failed: <googleapi error>.
  • I probed IsDefiniteStoredRefusal at this SHA with two such errors, and it returns true for both:
    • a polling googleapi: Error 403: Rate Limit Exceeded, rateLimitExceeded (GCP reports some rate limits as 403);
    • googleapi: Error 404 ... operations/op-1 was not found, notFound.
  • So the history row loses "may already have bought". The summary then tells the user the provider refused, while a non-cancellable CUD may exist.
  • Before this PR the hint was always kept, so this is new risk. The AWS unknown wrapper is safe, but only because its own "; " makes the first segment marker-less.
  • Fix direction: drop the hint only on a positive pre-send signal, such as AWS 4xx or throttle definites, or the approved-upfront refusal. Keep it for providers whose libraries don't classify outcomes, at least for the post-Insert commitment creation failed: text.

3. Tests

  • Fail on main: with the two handler files reverted to the merge base (c0d57f4), 4 of the new handler tests fail (TestProviderDenial_NeverReachesUserSurfaces, the partial/audit-loss execute test, session approve, the duplicate-hint test). The token-approve ones pass on main, as the body says.
  • Mutation probes, one change per run, killed:
    • sanitize as a no-op;
    • partial-run prefix dropped;
    • gate always hides;
    • gate "any" instead of "all";
    • hint never dropped;
    • hint computed from sanitized text;
    • failed-row status_description raw;
    • unknown fallback raw;
    • retry 409 failure_reason raw;
    • details error raw;
    • details recommendations[].error raw.
  • Survived:
    • status_description raw for the partially completed row (handler_history.go:490) and the audit-gap row (:502). The body claims both are sanitized, but no test covers them. Add both to TestProviderDenial_NeverReachesUserSurfaces.
    • Removing the early !hasProviderMarker return in SanitizeStoredError is an equivalent mutant (the per-segment check repeats it), so that one is fine.
  • Hardening (non-blocking): a provider message that itself contains "; " leaves a marker-less tail raw. My probe returned the provider returned an error; account 123456789012 is not eligible.

What holds

  • Variants: arn:aws also matches arn:aws-cn and arn:aws-us-gov. Assumed-role and role ARNs are caught by arn:aws, operation error or statuscode:. There is no AWS SDK v1 in go.mod, so its request id: format can't occur.
  • Over-scrubbing: no server-authored string in internal/api or internal/purchase contains a marker, only log lines. Server notes pass through.
  • Logs and storage: the raw error is logged once per execute failure and stays in the stored row, and the ops hint is computed from the raw text.
  • Read paths: history and paged history (both go through executionToHistoryRow), purchase details, the retry 409 and the execute responses are all covered. The other execution readers (dashboard, accounts, revoke, scoping) return no error text. The frontend renders only these sanitized fields; the RI exchange rec.error is in fix(api): summarize provider errors on RI exchange and Marketplace paths #1702.
  • Out of scope, not in fix(api): summarize provider errors on RI exchange and Marketplace paths #1702: handler_purchases.go:1495 returns failed to schedule execution %s: %v with the raw scheduler or store error to session approvers.
  • Gates: go vet and golangci-lint (2.11.4 locally; CI pins 2.10.1) pass on internal/api and internal/purchase, and so do go test ./internal/api/... ./internal/purchase/.... CI is green, and there are 0 open threads.

Not merging.

Fix round for the review at 7f977741. New head: 070b678c51f5d68b8e784f393f05901c526ecd21, rebased onto main b9a050cd.

  • Stored and live text now fail closed.
    • Only a positive allowlist of server-authored notes is shown as written: 22 anchored patterns in internal/purchase/errnotes.go, each tested against its real producer where one exists.
    • On the live path, a fixed set of server refusal sentinels (errors.Is) is also shown as written.
    • Any other text, including codeless provider responses, becomes one category message for the whole remainder. A "; " inside a provider message can no longer let a tail through.
  • Categories come from explicit code fields only: smithy ErrorCode, azcore ErrorCode and status, googleapi code and reason, the azidentity failure type, and in stored text the api error
:, StatusCode:, ERROR CODE:, RESPONSE <n>: and googleapi fields. URLs, paths and bodies are never matched, and a 5xx is never a refusal.
  • Duplicate-purchase hint. It is dropped only when every rec is AWS and every stored segment is an AWS 4xx response with a listed pre-send code (access, throttling/limit, invalid parameter or offering). GCP, Azure, any 5xx, missing codes, mixed providers and unknown outcomes keep it.
  • Tests. New tests cover real azcore errors without a code (400/409/412), a real azidentity authentication failure, an azcore 500 on a reservation URL, GCP 403 and 404 after creation was accepted, an AWS message containing "; ", and the partially completed and audit-gap rows. Fail-before was shown at 7f977741. Six mutations (allowlist bypass, live raw fallback, URL matching, gate accepting non-AWS, gate accepting 5xx, kept tail) are each killed.
  • Local, macOS, at the new head: go build ./... passes, go test ./internal/api ./internal/purchase ./internal/config passes, go vet ./internal/... is clean and golangci-lint reports 0 issues.

Deliberate tradeoff for reviewers. Text that is not on the allowlist now shows the generic message, even when it is readable. That includes wrapped "failed to get plan: ...", the email send failure reason, some library refusals (currency not accepted, reservation order blocked) and the "purchase outcome unknown" text. For the unknown-outcome case the duplicate-purchase hint still shows. The raw text stays in the server log and the stored row. A follow-up can add typed sentinels for the library refusals.

The out-of-scope items (RI exchange history, Azure revoke responses, the scheduler error at handler_purchases.go ~:1495, and last_collection_error) are tracked in #1702.

Independent review (claude-darling, cold, delta): CHANGES REQUESTED 070b678

My two blockers from 7f97774 are fixed. The new allowlist itself leaks through two doors, both small to close.

Earlier blockers: fixed. I re-ran the same probes at this head.

  • The real azidentity AADSTS 400 (RESPONSE 400, tenant ID in the token URL, app, trace and correlation IDs) is now scrubbed: SanitizeStoredError gives the category message, and ServerNoteMessage refuses it on the live path.
  • The "; " tail with an account ID is gone.
  • GCP commitment creation failed: googleapi: Error 403 ... rateLimitExceeded and ... 404 ... notFound keep the duplicate warning.
  • New variants I tried, all failing closed:
    • lowercase operation error ec2 ... statuscode: 403 ... api error unauthorizedoperation;
    • full-width colons (U+FF1A) in place of :;
    • an ARN split across a newline;
    • an allowlisted note followed by ; arn:aws:iam::<acct>:role/x;
    • an allowlisted note followed by a newline and an ARN.
  • Killed mutations: ServerNoteMessage passing any text, and onlyServerNotes accepting an unmatched item. Each is killed by the new Azure identity and codeless tests.

1. Blocking: free-tail allowlist entries pass wrapped store errors verbatim into stored history

Several entries end in [^;]*. In RE2 that class also matches newlines, so it takes any text without a ;. Some producers put an underlying error into exactly that tail:

  • ladder_execution_recheck.go:35: refusing to execute: ladder tranche lookup failed: %w (store error);
  • ladder_execution_recheck.go:49: refusing to execute ladder purchase: global config unreadable: %w (store error);
  • manager.go:458: ramp not advanced: %v, where the cause is the plan-progress write error;
  • azure_pricing.go:64: stale Azure recommendation pricing; ...: cannot read the latest collection state ...: %w (store error).

A Postgres connection failure is the normal case here. pgx prints it as failed to connect to `host=<db-endpoint> user=<db-user> database=<db>`: dial error (dial tcp <internal-ip>:5432: ...). I probed all four shapes at this SHA, and SanitizeStoredError returns each one unchanged, endpoint, DB user and internal IP included. So they reach History status_description, the purchase details and the retry 409.

2. Blocking: the live sentinel path returns the whole wrapped chain

ServerNoteMessage returns err.Error() once errors.Is matches a sentinel. Two producers wrap a non-server error under one:

  • azure_pricing.go:64: fmt.Errorf("%w: ...: %w", ErrStaleAzurePricing, err), where err is the freshness read;
  • claim.go:74: fmt.Errorf("%w: %w", ErrClaimedRowRefused, checkErr).

I probed both with the store error above, and the execute and session-approve response would carry it verbatim.

Fix direction for 1 and 2:

  • Log the cause, and store and return only the fixed server text (the sentinel's own Error() plus server-formatted values).
  • Narrow each free tail to the shape its producer really writes. For example, the tranche status, the mode, and the numbers in the cap note.
  • One test per producer would pin it: a wrapped store error must not appear in the output.

3. Duplicate-hint gate: safe, but probably never fires for real AWS refusals (non-blocking)

4. Open CodeRabbit thread at handler_history.go:421: agree

  • Clearing ops_hint for a definite refusal re-enables Retry in History, because canRetryFailedRow keys on ops_hint (frontend history.ts:797). Clicking it then gets the 409 from checkRetryEligibilityGates.
  • Keeping the duplicate warning in its own field would avoid tying the two together.

Deliberate tradeoff: I accept it.

  • For a security fix, failing closed is the right default. The cost is readable library refusals, wrapped plan errors, the email-failure reason and the "purchase outcome unknown" guidance showing the generic message.
  • The unknown-outcome case keeps the duplicate warning, and the raw text stays in the log and the stored row, so nothing is lost for operators.
  • Typed sentinels for the library refusals, as a follow-up, is the right way back to readable text. That also argues for fixing item 2 now, because the sentinel path is exactly what the follow-up will widen.

Gates: go vet and go test pass on internal/api, internal/purchase and internal/config, and golangci-lint passes on internal/api and internal/purchase. CI is green (41 checks). 3 CodeRabbit threads are open, the one above plus two Minor ones in errsummary.

Not merging.

Independent review (claude-fleet, cold): APPROVE 070b678

This is a re-review of the fix round against the blocking findings I reported privately at 7f97774. All of them are fixed at this head. I re-ran my real-error probes (real azcore.ResponseError values) against this SHA.

Checked

  • Stored text is fail-closed. SanitizeStoredError passes text through only when every "; "-separated item is an anchored, fully consumed match of an allowlisted server note (internal/purchase/errnotes.go). Anything else, including the remainder after a non-matching item, becomes one category message. The partial-run prefix is kept.
  • The live path shows only sentinels and allowlisted notes. summarizeExecuteFailure keeps the fixed category message unless ServerNoteMessage recognises a server sentinel or note. Typed provider errors never fall back to their own text.
  • Classification reads explicit code and status fields only. That is the AWS api error
:, Azure ERROR CODE: and RESPONSE nnn:, the googleapi status and reason, and the typed ErrorCode and StatusCode. URLs, resource names and bodies no longer count, and a 5xx is never a definite refusal.
  • The duplicate-purchase hint is dropped only when every rec is AWS and every segment is an AWS 4xx with a listed code that is refused before anything is created (IsDefiniteAWSRefusal). The stated tradeoff is sound: Azure and GCP keep the warning even on clear refusals. That errs on the side of showing the warning, and RedriveUnsafe is unchanged.
  • My probe inputs, all handled now: a codeless Azure 4xx, a codeless savings-plan 400, Azure and AWS 5xx on reservation paths, a "; " inside one provider message, fullwidth and NBSP separators, zero-width characters, uppercase notes, provider text as a following item, and the partial-run prefix with provider text.
  • The raw error stays in the DB and the logs. exec.Error is not rewritten, and logRawExecuteFailure logs it.
  • Tests and lint. go vet is clean, golangci-lint reports 0 issues, and go test ./internal/purchase/ ./internal/api/ passes. With head's tests on main b9a050c, six fail, including the new codeless-Azure and azidentity cases.

Non-blocking

  • One hardening note about the allowlist's free-text tails has been reported privately to the maintainers. It isn't reachable through any current writer.

Review only, not merging.

Independent review (claude-fleet, cold): CHANGES REQUESTED 070b678

I'm withdrawing my APPROVE at this SHA. The two blocking items in claude-darling's delta review are live, and I concur that they block:

  1. The free-tail allowlist entries pass a wrapped store error through verbatim.
  2. The live sentinel path returns the whole wrapped error chain.

My probes hit both paths. I had judged the wrapped errors there to be harmless store text, but that text can carry deployment details. The rest of my review at this SHA stands. I'll re-review the fix round.

Review only, not merging.

Add a closed set of failure categories (access denied, not available,
limit reached, unknown) with fixed user messages. SummarizeProviderError
classifies a live error by its type, and SanitizeStoredError rewrites
already-stored error strings that carry provider text, leaving
server-authored notes untouched.

… in logs

When a provider refuses a purchase, the execute response, the history
rows, the purchase details and the retry 409 now show a short category
message plus the execution ID instead of the provider's own error text.
The full error is written to the server log, and the stored error column
is unchanged. Rows already stored are summarized when read.

The session approve test that expected the raw run error text now expects
the category message and the execution reference.

…tcomes

A failed EC2 or Redshift row carried a warning that the earlier attempt
may already have bought the commitment, even when the provider gave a
definite refusal (access denied, not available, limit reached). In those
cases nothing was bought, so the warning is now left out. It stays for
failures with an unknown outcome. Retry eligibility is unchanged.

…s refused

The warning was dropped when the stored error contained any definite
provider refusal. A failed run joins one error per rec, so a run where
one rec was refused and another ended with an unknown outcome lost the
warning even though the second rec may have bought a commitment.

The gate now requires every "; "-joined segment to be a definite
provider refusal.

Refs #1688

Stored and live error text now fails closed: only allowlisted server notes
(and known refusal sentinels) are shown as written; any other text becomes
one category message for the whole remainder. Categories come from explicit
code fields only, and the duplicate-purchase hint is dropped only when every
rec is AWS and every segment is an AWS 4xx with a listed pre-send code.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Real azcore and azidentity errors, googleapi errors and AWS messages with a
semicolon, checked on the stored, live and history paths.

Allowlisted notes no longer pass a free-text tail. Tails are pinned to
closed formats (digits, ISO dates, id lists, fixed phrases). A note whose
tail can carry a wrapped store or config error (ramp not advanced, ladder
tranche lookup, ladder global config, stale Azure pricing, commitment cap
and claim refusals) now shows only its fixed head when the tail is not a
closed format, instead of the whole item or the category fallback.

Refs #1721

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ServerNoteMessage and the stale-pricing responses now return the
sentinel's fixed text when errors.Is matches, instead of the wrapped
chain, which may end in a store or provider error. The full chain is
still logged by the caller.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A failed row with a definite AWS refusal now keeps a fixed ops_hint
instead of an empty one. The History UI hides Retry when ops_hint is
set, so clearing it showed a Retry button that always got a 409. The
hint says AWS refused the purchase before it was made and carries no
duplicate-purchase warning.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…firmed

Stored errors are now classified from every "Reason:" line, not only
the first, so a recognized reason in second place is found. A failure
while waiting on a GCP operation after the Insert was accepted
("commitment creation failed: ...") is never a definite category: it
shows that the outcome could not be confirmed, live and stored, and the
duplicate-purchase hint stays.

Round 2 fix for the reviews at 070b678c. New head: 5bc1aad2e08d8d25556ce2dd2613258c39d340cd, rebased onto main 6afd546e.

  • Server notes show only a fixed head or a closed tail.

    • No allowlist pattern passes free text or matches a newline.
    • Notes whose tail came from another error now render only their fixed head: "ramp not advanced", the ladder tranche and global-config refusals, the stale-pricing head and the claim refusal.
    • Tails kept are closed formats only: decimal amounts, RFC3339 dates and durations, enumerated tranche states and modes, and ID tokens.
    • Anything else falls back to one category message for the whole string. Refs fix(purchase): ServerNoteMessage: constrain the free-text tails of allowlisted notes #1721.
  • A sentinel match returns only the sentinel's own text. This applies to all six sentinels, plus the stale-pricing paths in executeFailureError and tokenActionError. The full chain is logged once.

  • CodeRabbit threads.

    • Retry: a definite AWS refusal now keeps a fixed ops_hint with no duplicate-purchase text, so Retry stays hidden.
    • GCP reasons: every googleapi reason is read, not only the first.
    • GCP post-insert waits: a failed operation wait after an accepted insert is unknown and says "the provider accepted the request but its outcome could not be confirmed; check the account before trying again". The duplicate hint stays.
  • Tests. The new tests failed at 070b678c and pass now. They cover:

    • wrapped database errors inside every tailed note, on history, details and retry 409;
    • a sentinel wrapping a provider error, on the live execute;
    • no pattern matching a newline;
    • multi-reason GCP;
    • GCP post-insert unconfirmed;
    • the ops_hint kept for definite refusals.

    Five mutations (free tail, sentinel chain, cleared ops_hint, first reason only, post-insert marker) are each killed.

  • Local, macOS, at the rebased head: go build ./... passes, go test ./internal/api ./internal/purchase ./internal/config ./internal/scheduler passes and go vet ./internal/... is clean. golangci-lint flagged one prealloc, fixed in the last commit.

Known limit (fail safe). The duplicate-warning gate does not yet accept the executor's failed to purchase ... RI: wrapper, so real refused AWS rows still show the warning. This is noted on #1694 as remaining item 3 work.

Independent review (claude-darling, cold, delta): APPROVE 5bc1aad

This supersedes my CHANGES REQUESTED at 070b678. Both blockers are fixed, and I re-ran my probes at this SHA.

1. Stored notes: fixed

  • Every allowlisted note is now closed. Its variable parts are narrow classes (\d+, [a-z_]+, IDs without spaces), with no free text.
  • The seven notes whose tail can carry a wrapped error are now head-only entries. renderServerNotes writes the fixed head and drops the tail. A tail cannot cross a ;, so whatever follows "; " must itself be a known note, or the whole string falls back to the category message.
  • Probed with a wrapped database connection error (host, user, address) on all seven heads, plus:
    • a per-rec <type>: prefix;
    • the partial-run prefix;
    • a note followed by "; " and a wrapped error;
    • a "; " inside the wrapped error;
    • a newline followed by an ARN.
  • Nothing from the wrapped error reaches the output.

2. Live sentinels: fixed

  • ServerNoteMessage returns sentinel.Error() only. I probed all five sentinels wrapping that error, and each returns exactly its own text.

3. Earlier cases still hold:

  • the azidentity 400 stored and live;
  • the "; " tail;
  • lowercase, full-width and split-ARN variants;
  • GCP post-insert 403/404 waits, which are not definite and are stored as the "outcome could not be confirmed" message.

4. The duplicate-warning gate fails safe, as stated (#1694).

  • With the executor's failed to purchase EC2 RI: operation error ... StatusCode: 403 ... UnauthorizedOperation wrapper, IsDefiniteAWSRefusal returns false. So the history row keeps the duplicate-purchase warning, and the stored text is still summarised, never raw.
  • When the gate does accept, ops_hint becomes a fixed text rather than empty (handler_history.go ~:419). Retry stays hidden in both cases, which resolves the earlier Retry concern.

Mutations: I ran one change per run against the PR's own tests, and each was killed:

  • a sentinel returning the whole chain: TestServerNoteMessage_SentinelReturnsOnlyItsOwnText and the execute-failure sentinel test;
  • the head path writing its tail: TestSanitizeStoredError_TailedNotesShowOnlyTheirHead;
  • the head path removed: the verbatim and tailed-note tests.

Gates: go vet and go test pass on internal/api, internal/purchase and internal/config, and golangci-lint passes on internal/api and internal/purchase. CI is green (40 checks; CodeRabbit skipped).

Housekeeping: the 3 earlier CodeRabbit threads (handler_history.go ~:422, errsummary.go ~:102, errsummary_provider_test.go ~:121) are still unresolved. The code at this SHA addresses them, so they need a reply and resolution.

Not merging.

Independent review (claude-fleet, cold): APPROVE 5bc1aad

This supersedes my CHANGES REQUESTED at 070b678. Both blockers raised there (free-tail notes, and sentinel matches returning the wrapped chain) are fixed at this head.

What I checked, on an export of 5bc1aad:

  • Stored path (SanitizeStoredError). Every serverNoteHeads entry was probed with a real pgx connect error produced by pgx.Connect against a refused local port. The error text carries the DB user and the address. I also probed a pgx server error (SQLSTATE), an AWS AccessDenied carrying an assumed-role ARN, and a multi-line mix. Each was tried:

    • bare;
    • after a <resourceType>: rec head;
    • after the partial-run prefix;
    • before and after a closed note joined with ; .

    Every output kept only the fixed head. A closed note followed by : , a space, a newline, ; or ; plus wrapped text falls back to the category message.

  • Live path (SummarizeProviderError plus ServerNoteMessage, as summarizeExecuteFailure composes them). The inputs were %w: %w in both orders, and errors.Join with each of the six sentinels. Each serverNoteHeads entry also wrapped the real pgx error, alongside the bare and wrapped pgx error. The response text never carried the user, the address or "dial". A sentinel match returns only sentinel.Error(), and the sentinels are fixed errors.New strings.

  • Duplicate-purchase warning (IsDefiniteAWSRefusal). It returns true only for an AWS 4xx with a listed pre-send code, bare or after a rec head. The executor's failed to purchase ... RI: wrapper (fix(purchases): a refused AWS purchase shows a viewport-tall toast, re-arms Execute, warns of a possible duplicate and counts as a purchase #1694), with or without a rec head, returns false. So the duplicate warning is kept and RedriveUnsafe stays set: it fails safe. These all return false as well:

    • 5xx;
    • an unlisted code (IdempotentParameterMismatch);
    • "definite + unknown" across ; ;
    • a newline tail;
    • empty input, or the prefix only;
    • a GCP rec;
    • "outcome unknown" text.

    In executionToHistoryRow, OpsHint is set on both branches, so Retry stays hidden.

  • The 3 CodeRabbit threads are resolved, and the fixes are in the code: the ops_hint stays set; every GCP reason is read; a post-insert wait is checked first and kept unconfirmed.

  • Fail-before. The three new tail tests (TailedNotesShowOnlyTheirHead, NoPatternMatchesANewline, SentinelReturnsOnlyItsOwnText) fail on 070b678 on their assertions, and pass here.

  • Results. go vet is clean, golangci-lint reports 0 issues, and go test ./internal/purchase/ ./internal/api/ passes.

Non-blocking notes have gone to the maintainers.
