Summary

LiteLLM reports mode: "responses" on /v1/model/info for deployments configured for the Responses API (for example use_responses_api: true). The plugin registered every discovered model through the Chat Completions runtime, so those models were addressed over the wrong API surface. This routes only those models through /v1/responses, using the reported mode as the single signal (no model-id guessing).

Type of change

  • 🐛 Bug fix (non-breaking)
  • ✨ New feature (non-breaking)
  • 💥 Breaking change
  • 📝 Documentation only
  • 🔧 Internal / refactor

Note: on OpenCode 1 the Responses models move to a <provider>-responses sibling provider (their model id becomes <provider>-responses/<model>).

Checklist

  • npm run typecheck passes
  • No new runtime dependencies (or justified in this PR description)
  • README updated if public API or behavior changed
  • CHANGELOG.md updated under ## [Unreleased]
  • Commit messages follow Conventional Commits

How was this tested?

  • npm run typecheck and npm test (119 tests).
  • OpenCode 2 (2.0.x): a Responses model keeps its provider id with the Responses runtime override; a live turn reaches /v1/responses and the model list has no duplicates.
  • OpenCode 1 (1.19.0): the plugin creates the <provider>-responses sibling and a live turn to a sibling model reaches /v1/responses.

Details

  • OpenCode 2 chooses the runtime per model: a Responses model keeps its provider id and overrides the package to @opencode/ai/providers/openai/responses. That is the Responses runtime bundled with OpenCode 2.0.x; the openai-compatible Responses variant is not bundled there, and selecting it fails model initialization (Cannot find package '@opencode/ai').
  • OpenCode 1 chooses the runtime per provider, so the config hook adds a <provider>-responses sibling built on @ai-sdk/openai (which defaults to the Responses API). It reuses the same endpoint, credentials, and custom headers, and is created only when at least one model needs it.
  • Discovery now returns the Responses model ids alongside the built entries, and the model cache stores them (CACHE_VERSION bump) so the synchronous cache path keeps the routing across restarts.
  • Only LiteLLM's reported mode is used; the plugin does not guess from the model id.
  • Hand-curated entries are left where the user put them. On OpenCode 1 the runtime is per provider, so routing such a model would require moving it (and changing its id); the plugin does not relocate user-authored entries. On OpenCode 2 the runtime is per model, so the same model is routed without moving. Hand-defined Responses models on OpenCode 1 can be placed under the <provider>-responses provider, or left to discovery.
  • Because the OpenCode 1 sibling occupies the -responses id suffix, providers whose id ends with -responses are not managed by the plugin.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Models LiteLLM reports with mode: "responses" now use the OpenAI Responses API automatically. Other models continue using Chat Completions.
    • On OpenCode 1, Responses API models are routed through a separate provider; on OpenCode 2, they use a per-model runtime package.
  • Breaking Changes
    • On OpenCode 1, Responses API model IDs now use the <provider>-responses provider. OpenCode 2 model IDs are unchanged.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the README with routing behavior and model identification guidance.

LiteLLM reports `mode: "responses"` on `/v1/model/info` for deployments
configured for the Responses API (for example `use_responses_api: true`).
The plugin registered every discovered model through the Chat Completions
runtime, so those models were addressed over the wrong API surface. For
OpenAI reasoning-tier models that mismatch also surfaces as
`reasoning_effort` being rejected together with function tools on
`/v1/chat/completions`.

Route only those models through the Responses API, using the reported
`mode` as the single signal (no model-id guessing):

- OpenCode 2 picks the runtime per model, so the model keeps its provider
id and overrides the package to
`@opencode/ai/providers/openai/responses`. That is the Responses runtime
OpenCode 2.0.x bundles; the `openai-compatible` Responses variant is not
bundled there, and selecting it fails model initialization.
- OpenCode 1 picks the runtime per provider, so the config hook adds a
`<provider>-responses` sibling built on `@ai-sdk/openai` (which defaults
to the Responses API), created only when a model needs it.

Discovery now returns the Responses model ids alongside the built entries,
and the model cache stores them (CACHE_VERSION 3) so the synchronous cache
path keeps the routing across restarts. Models already curated on the
other side are left in place instead of being duplicated.

📝 Walkthrough

Models reported with mode: "responses" are routed through the Responses API. The plugin preserves these model IDs in its cache and applies different routing behavior in OpenCode 1 and OpenCode 2.

Changes: Responses API routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mode detection and cached metadata
src/utils/*, test/model-cache.test.ts, test/transport.test.ts, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
The routing predicate matches a trimmed, case-insensitive responses mode. The versioned model cache stores associated IDs. Tests and documentation cover the routing rule and version differences.
OpenCode 1 provider injection
src/plugin/index.ts, test/plugin-v1.test.ts
The config hook routes Responses API models to a -responses sibling provider and keeps other discovered models in the original provider. Cached and fresh results use this split, and provider headers include native and legacy headers.
OpenCode 2 model conversion
src/plugin/v2.ts, test/plugin-v2.test.ts
Discovery and cache refresh pass Responses API IDs into model conversion. Matching models use the OpenAI runtime package; chat models do not receive a per-model package override.

After a model switches to Responses mode, an existing OpenCode 2 session can continue routing it through Chat Completions. Correct refresh merging before relying on live mode changes.

OpenCode 1 reads provider headers from `options.headers` and passes them to
the runtime package (`@ai-sdk/openai` for the sibling); it has no
`customHeaders` key. `ensureResponsesProvider` only wrote the plugin's
`customHeaders`, so a gateway that requires extra headers (for example
Cloudflare Access) would authenticate the chat provider but not the Responses
sibling.

Merge the chat provider's native headers and the plugin's `customHeaders` into
the sibling's `options.headers`, so Responses requests carry the same headers.
Review follow-ups on the Responses routing:

- Discovery (health check, /v1/models, /v1/model/info) read only the
legacy `customHeaders` key, so a gateway configured via the provider's
native `options.headers` authenticated completions but not discovery.
Merge both in `readProviderHeaders` so discovery and the runtime agree.
- Add `readModelCacheEntry` and use it on the v1/v2 cache fast paths so
the models and the Responses ids come from a single file read instead
of two (which could also disagree under concurrent writes).
- Document why the OpenCode 2 runtime is the OpenAI-specific Responses
package (and the provider-neutral alternative), and note that a
  `mode: "responses"` model is chat-shaped for classification.

Tests: native headers reach discovery, the cached fast path routes
Responses models to the sibling, a filtered Responses model creates no
sibling, and the combined cache entry round-trips.
- `mode: "responses"` comes from LiteLLM's model cost map / the model's
configured mode, not from `use_responses_api`. Reword the README and
FAQ to point at `model_info.mode` on `/v1/model/info` instead of
implying that setting the flag is what triggers routing.
- Call out the OpenCode 1 model-id move (`<provider>/<model>` ->
`<provider>-responses/<model>`) as a breaking change with an upgrade
note in the README and CHANGELOG, since saved sessions/agents that
hard-code the old id stop resolving.

Hey @temeteke 👋 — really like this. Using LiteLLM's reported mode as the single signal (instead of guessing from the model id) is exactly right, and the v1-sibling / v2-per-model split is a neat way to handle the two different runtime models. I reviewed it and pushed two small commits to the branch (fix: send native headers on discovery and read the cache once and docs: correct Responses-mode guidance and flag the OpenCode 1 id change) — nothing structural, just tightening a couple of edges. npm run typecheck and npm test are green (124 tests).

What I changed

1. Discovery now sends the provider's native options.headers (readProviderHeaders)
Your second commit correctly merges options.headers + customHeaders onto the sibling, but the plugin's own fetches (health check, /v1/models, /v1/model/info) still read only customHeaders. So a gateway configured via options.headers alone (e.g. Cloudflare Access) would serve completions while discovery 401s — and you'd never get far enough to create the sibling. Discovery now merges both, with customHeaders winning on conflict. Added a test asserting the header lands on every discovery request.

2. One cache read instead of two (readModelCacheEntry)
readModelCache + readModelCacheResponsesIds read and parsed the same file twice and could disagree under a concurrent write. Added readModelCacheEntry (single parse) and used it on both the v1 and v2 fast paths; the existing readers stay as thin wrappers.

3. Docs

  • mode comes from LiteLLM's model cost map / the model's configured mode, not from use_responses_api, so I reworded the README + FAQ to point people at model_info.mode on /v1/model/info instead of implying the flag is what flips routing. If I've got that wrong and use_responses_api: true does surface mode: "responses" on your proxy, say so and I'll revert that bit.
  • Added an upgrade note (README + CHANGELOG) for the OpenCode 1 id move <provider>/<model> → <provider>-responses/<model>, since saved sessions/agents that hard-code the old id stop resolving. I'd label that a breaking change for v1 users rather than "non-breaking" — happy to change it back if you'd rather keep it under Features.

Two things I left alone (your call)

  • OpenCode 2 runtime. I only expanded the comment on RESPONSES_PACKAGE to record the trade-off: @opencode/ai/providers/openai/responses is the OpenAI-specific runtime (it injects store: false, plus reasoningEffort/reasoningSummary/encrypted-reasoning include for gpt-5* ids), whereas the provider-neutral @opencode/ai/providers/openai-compatible/responses is the closer match for a generic proxy and does ship in @opencode/ai@2.0.19. You tested that the compatible variant fails to load on your 2.0.x — if that still holds on the version you target, keeping the OpenAI runtime is fine; I just wanted the trade-off on the record.
  • v1 transport flips. v1 doesn't track which entries it injected, so if LiteLLM flips a model chat↔responses the stale entry stays put (v2 has ownedModelIds for exactly this). It's a rare case and your README already documents the curated-entry behavior, so I didn't touch the logic — just flagging it as a possible follow-up.

Thanks again — this is a nice one. 🙌

Replace plugin-owned models during refresh.

The refresh detects the package change, but mergeProviderModels keeps the existing plugin-owned model when its ID remains in discovery. The refreshed Responses model is not published, so the provider continues using Chat Completions.
