Source: three rounds on #72, 2026-09-12 and 2026-09-13, each of which had to delete an existing sentence to add a new one.
Reached by: any change to a screen that adds a rule to docs/architecture/ui.md. The file is 16379 bytes against a 16384-byte ceiling, so doc-limits refuses the next fact.
Expected delta: 40 lines, 0 test lines
docs/architecture/ui.md is 5 bytes under its ceiling. It is the one document that states how every screen behaves, and it is now full, so each new rule is paid for by deleting an older one. Three deletions were made in three rounds to fit new facts, and two of them removed the only prose statement of behaviour the code still has and the tests still pin. The next author pays the same toll, and the document loses accuracy every time.
Requirements
- Split the document along a line a reader would recognise, so each part has room and a title that says what is in it. The screens' shared rules (colour roles, regions, selection, cut marks, row expansions) and the per-screen behaviour are the obvious seam.
- Every part keeps its own ceiling, and the ceilings are set with room to grow rather than at the current size.
- The invariants keep their numbers, or are renumbered in one pass with every citation of them updated in the same change. A citation that no longer resolves is worse than a full file.
- Restore what the last three rounds deleted for space, checking each against the code first: the last way a crowded card writes itself, which states every conclusion as a count per kind, and the lane sentence giving a name up to the count when not even one name fits. Both are live behaviour that tests pin.
Context
- Location:
docs/architecture/ui.md, the doc-limits settings that set its ceiling, and whatever indexes the architecture documents.
