Tailwind's rotate-x-*, rotate-y-* and rotate-z-* utilities resolve to invalid transforms on native. For example rotate-y-180 resolves to [{ rotate: '' }, { rotateY: '' }], which React Native's transform validation rejects in development ("Rotate transform must be expressed in degrees (deg) or radians (rad)").

There are two causes:

  • processFunction keeps the arguments of skewX()/skewY() but drops them for rotateX()/rotateY()/rotateZ(), so --tw-rotate-y: rotateY(180deg) compiles to "rotateY".
  • parseTransformsMutation matches transform tokens by prefix, so rotate also picks up rotateX(...).

The fix handles rotateX/rotateY/rotateZ like skewX/skewY and matches the transform name followed by (.

Added a Rotate 3D case to transforms.test.tsx (rotate-x-45, rotate-y-180, -rotate-y-45, rotate-z-30, rotate-x-12 rotate-y-12). It fails on main and passes with the fix. build, check:typescript, check:typescript:test, lint, check:format, circular:check, test:native, test:web, test:types and test:e2e pass locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved 3D rotation handling for X, Y, and Z axes, including combined X/Y rotations.
    • Ensured each rotation is parsed as its own transform, so rotate no longer incorrectly matches rotateX.

📝 Walkthrough

The CSS processor now handles rotateX, rotateY, and rotateZ. Native transform parsing matches exact transform names, and tests cover individual and combined 3D rotations.

The CSS processor handles X-, Y-, and Z-axis rotations. Transform-token matching requires the exact transform name. Tests check rotation properties, degree values, and combined rotation order.

🟡 Minor · Preserve the order of CSS transform tokens. · transforms.ts:39-47

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the order of CSS transform tokens.

A supported CSS declaration such as transform: rotateY(10deg) rotateX(20deg) preserves its token order through the CSS processor and reaches parseTransformsMutation. The current fixed outer loop emits rotateX before rotateY. React Native applies transform arrays in listed order, and X/Y rotations are non-commutative, so this can produce a different native orientation.

Keep standalone transform-property handling in its existing fixed order, but parse styles.transform tokens in token order:

Suggested fix
-    for (const transform of transforms) {
-        if (transformTokens.length > 0) {
-            // Transforms inside transform - transform: rotate(45deg);
-            for (const token of transformTokens) {
+    if (transformTokens.length > 0) {
+        // Transforms inside transform - transform: rotate(45deg);
+        for (const token of transformTokens) {
+            for (const transform of transforms) {
                 // Match the function name exactly, `rotate` must not take `rotateX(45deg)`
                 if (!token.startsWith(`${transform}(`)) {
                     continue
                 }

                 const transformValue = token.slice(transform.length + 1, -1)

                 transformsResult.push({ [transform]: processTransform(transform, transformValue) })
             }
         }
+    }

+    for (const transform of transforms) {
         // Transforms outside of transform - { rotate: '45deg' }
         if (styles[transform] !== undefined) {
             transformsResult.push({ [transform]: processTransform(transform, styles[transform]) })
             delete styles[transform]
         }
