Cover the active batteries' overflow from standby in efficiency mode - #751
In efficiency mode (MIN_EFFICIENT_POWER), the idle batteries stay at 0 W even when the running battery can't deliver what the house needs: at its power limit, full or empty, or a B2500 that can't charge from a surplus. The rest is imported or exported, although another battery sits idle. That is why the docs capped MIN_EFFICIENT_POWER at about 40 % of a battery's power limit, and why a strict priority order (discussion #741: one battery takes what it can, the other only the overflow) could not be set up without a remainder on the grid.
The idle batteries now act as a standby reserve, with no new setting:
A standby battery stays at exactly 0 W while the batteries ahead of it can cover the demand.
Once every battery ahead is out of room in the demand's direction (at its learned ceiling, saturated, or DC-only under a surplus) and the grid still shows demand, the next standby joins and takes only the overflow. Further standbys join one at a time, in rotation order.
When demand falls, the battery that joined last gives back first, down to 0 W and never past it, so batteries don't charge each other.
Hysteresis keeps a head hovering at its ceiling from toggling the standby: join margin 25 W, stay margin 50 W, a 10 s hold while a spiller still carries power, and a 30 W give-back deadband.
Re-decided on every call, before the probe and fade handoffs, so a meter repeating its reading still hands an emptied battery's load over.
Breaking change: a 0 % Efficiency Window Weight used to park a battery while the others could cover. It now makes the battery a backup: it never leads, but covers what the others can't. To keep a battery out entirely, set its Distribution Weight to 0 or switch it inactive. The changelog and docs say so.
Two adjustments to the saturation swap keep the reserve doing the work:
The swap no longer promotes a 0 % window battery, which _sync_pool sank straight back.
Under a surplus it no longer picks a DC-only battery.
A joining standby also gets a 20 s saturation grace, so a B2500 isn't scored as saturated before it can start.
Python and C++ change together; the steer log names a spilling battery rotation=overflow on both.

Costs: export rises a little in three scenarios, because the batteries now covering a load must ramp down when it drops, where the base imported that overflow. Battery travel is up 12–45 %, because the standby now moves.
Remaining gap: the reserve doesn't close the gap to running all batteries together. With MIN_EFFICIENT_POWER=0, priority_pair scores 3.08 regret and 157 Wh import, against 5.33 and 278 here. The rest is mostly the handover lag: a standby starts from 0 W only once the batteries ahead are at their limit.
Tests:
13 Python tests in tests/test_balancer_standby_reserve.py and 10 C++ host gtests.
Parity harness: 5 named closed-loop streams that assert the reserve engaged, plus 16 fuzzed fleets with ceilings, window weights including 0, faults and a slow meter.
uv run ruff format --check . && uv run ruff check . && uv run mypy src/ are clean. The full uv run pytest has no failures. Its gtest wrappers can't download googletest in the sandbox, so I built those binaries against a local googletest copy instead; all 10 CT002 binaries pass, the balancer's 57 tests included.
Known Python/C++ divergence: this predates the change. The grid predictor leaves ~1e-8 W residues in Python where the C++ float maths gives exactly 0, so long noiseless streams diverge even on develop. The recorded parity streams use a few watts of meter noise.

Standby batteries can cover demand that active batteries cannot meet when they reach their power limits or are full or empty. They stay idle until needed and give back their contribution first as demand falls.
Set Efficiency Window Weight to 0% to keep a battery in backup reserve. Set Distribution Weight to 0 or make it inactive to exclude it.
Documentation
Updated the efficiency-mode, battery-priority, and Home Assistant/MQTT guidance to explain standby behavior and related settings.
In efficiency mode a battery outside the active set (faded fully out,
including a 0 % efficiency window weight sunk to the tail) now stays at
exactly 0 W only while the batteries ahead of it can cover the demand.
Once every one of them is out of headroom in the demand's direction (at
its learned ceiling, saturated, or DC-only under a surplus), standby
batteries take the overflow one at a time in rotation order, DC-only
ones passed over under a surplus, and give it back last in, first out,
down to 0 W and never past it.
- Decided on every call (_update_spill), not cached on the meter-derived
sample id, so a meter repeating its reading still hands an emptied head
over. Joining takes the ceiling margin, staying twice that; a spiller
still carrying power is held SPILL_RELEASE_SECONDS after the head
regains headroom; errors under SPILL_UNLOAD_DEADBAND_W against the spill
direction are not unloaded from the standby first.
- Decided before the probe and fade returns: during a probe a spiller
holds its output (giving back only a real drop) and the probe splits the
demand without it; during a fade it is the integrator. Spillers are
never zeroed by the fade path.
- Spillers join the share math with SPILL_WEIGHT per rank via
_share_weight (C++: a per-tick scale map, no report copies); a battery
ahead that is saturated or charge-blind is capped where it stands.
- A joining standby gets a SPILL_JOIN_GRACE_SECONDS saturation grace, so a
slow starter (B2500) is not capped at its idle output.
- The saturation swap stays; it no longer promotes a 0 % window battery
(sync_pool sank it straight back and hid the empty head behind a fresh
grace) or a DC-only battery under a surplus (a probe it cannot pass).
- Spill state is cleared in remove_consumer, detach_from_auto_pool and
force_rotation; the steer log names a spiller rotation=overflow.
- Nothing changes with MIN_EFFICIENT_POWER at 0: every /fair evaluation
scenario, and every existing /eff one, is bit-identical.

The idle batteries in efficiency mode now cover what the running ones
can't, so MIN_EFFICIENT_POWER no longer has to fit under a battery's power
limit, and a 0 % Efficiency Window Weight makes a battery a backup instead
of keeping it out. Describe both in ct002.md (with a short recipe for a
strict priority order), mqtt-insights.md and the FAQ, name Distribution
Weight 0 and the Active switch as the ways to keep a battery out, and add
the changelog entry.

The Python and C++ balancers now allocate unmet demand to standby batteries when higher-priority batteries lack headroom. The changes add reserve selection, spill allocation and release behavior, saturation-swap rules, tests, and updated efficiency-mode documentation.
Changes
Standby reserve behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reserve state and selection src/astrameter/ct002/balancer.py, esphome/components/ct002/balancer.h, esphome/components/ct002/balancer.cpp
Both balancers add reserve state and tuning values. They identify headroom limits, select eligible standby batteries in priority order, and clear reserve state when consumers leave or rotation is forced.
Spill allocation and steering src/astrameter/ct002/balancer.py, esphome/components/ct002/balancer.cpp
Standby batteries take overflow after batteries ahead lack headroom. The balancers apply spill-adjusted shares, handle probes and fades, unload spillers in reverse order, and prevent targets from crossing zero.
Saturation and priority rules src/astrameter/ct002/balancer.py, esphome/components/ct002/balancer.cpp
Saturated-battery replacement considers battery reports and grid demand. It excludes certain zero-weight and non-AC-chargeable candidates.
Documentation and comments describe zero Efficiency Window Weight as standby behavior and distinguish it from a zero Distribution Weight or an inactive battery.

A 0 % battery is sunk to the tail on every poll, so no rotation makes it
the lead, and Force Rotation only restarts the timer. The recipe now swaps
the window weights and keeps the long interval for fleets with more than
one battery ahead of the backup.

Cover the two-spiller path with a deterministic test.
A 2000 W load can drive the three 800 W batteries into ["b", "c"]. The current fixture uses only 1200 W and asserts ["b"], so it does not test multi-entry joining or reverse-order release. Add the case at this fixture.

📊 Interactive grid-power charts (zoom / hover / toggle series) are in the self-contained steering-eval-report.html report — see the link below (it opens directly in the browser).
What do these metrics mean?
Metric
Meaning
settle_mean_s
Mean seconds after a load/PV step for grid power to return inside the ±25 W settle band and hold for 10 s (reaction speed).
settle_p95_s
95th-percentile settle time — the slow tail of reactions.
unsettled_events
Number of disturbance events that never settled within the 10-minute measurement window.
overshoot_mean_w
Mean overshoot (W): how far grid power swings past zero to the opposite sign after an event.
overshoot_max_w
Worst-case overshoot (W) across all events.
band_crossings_per_h
Sign flips per hour across the ±20 W hysteresis band — oscillation / hunting frequency.
grid_p2p_w
Sustained peak-to-peak grid swing (95th - 5th percentile) over the whole run — oscillation amplitude. Non-zero whenever the loop keeps hunting, including continuous oscillation the step-response metrics (settle/overshoot) miss.
grid_rms_w
RMS grid power (W) over the whole run, transients included — the L2 tracking error: how cleanly the loop held zero, penalising big excursions (overshoot, swings) far harder than a small steady offset. Pairs with battery_travel_w_per_h as the control-effort term.
steady_rms_w
RMS grid power (W) during steady state (excluding the 120 s after each event) — residual jitter when nothing is changing.
mean_abs_grid_w
Mean absolute grid power (W) over the whole run — overall tracking accuracy.
share_imbalance_w
Time-weighted watts misallocated between batteries sharing a phase (sum of each battery's deviation from the even fair share) — 0 when the pool splits load evenly, higher when one battery is left lopsided (issue #523). 0 for scenarios with at most one battery per phase.
avoidable_import_wh
Energy imported from the grid (Wh) the battery could have supplied (it had charge and discharge headroom) — missed self-consumption.
avoidable_export_wh
Energy exported to the grid (Wh) an AC-chargeable battery could have absorbed (it had room and charge headroom) — missed charging.
cost_regret_ct
Money north-star: electricity bill (eurocents, import @ 30 ct/kWh, export @ 8 ct/kWh) over what a perfect-foresight optimal battery would have paid on the same load, with energy still stored at the end credited at the feed-in tariff. Ungameable (both grid directions cost); 0 = matched the optimum. The single number that says how much the controller left on the table.
battery_travel_w_per_h
Total absolute change in battery setpoints per hour (W/h) — control effort / actuator wear; lower is smoother.
peak_qh_over_w
Peak shaving only: how far the highest 15-minute mean grid import rose above the threshold (W) — the peak a capacity tariff bills. The scenario's pack can cover every peak, so 0 is reachable; 0 for scenarios without peak shaving.
peak_excess_wh
Peak shaving only: all energy imported above the threshold (Wh), including brief excursions a quarter-hour mean averages away; 0 without peak shaving.
