The Open Accelerators Project

Particle accelerators you can build, understand and touch safely.

We build real particle accelerators that run entirely on safety extra-low voltage (SELV): max. 50 V AC / 120 V DC, no high voltage anywhere a person can reach. Everything we design, simulate and measure is published here, so that schools, clubs and other curious people can rebuild it and take it further.

Why?

Accelerator physics is usually taught with pictures, analogue models or data from big labs. We think it should be possible to have a real beam on a table, built by students with a limited budget and without dangerous voltages.

What you'll find here

Repo What it is Status
coming soon Our first machine (architecture being decided: cyclotron, LINAC or something else) 🟡 planning
coming soon Simulation code for beam dynamics and energy spectra 🟡 planning
coming soon Build docs, bill of materials, safety concept 🟡 planning

Principles

  • ⚡ Safe by design: SELV only, particle energies kept well below the 5 keV threshold of German radiation protection law
  • 📖 Open everything: CAD, schematics, code, measurement data and our mistakes
  • 🔁 Rebuildable: off-the-shelf parts wherever possible, costs documented
  • 📏 Measured, not claimed: every result comes with raw data and a method

Who we are

A small team from Frankfurt am Main, Germany, supported by Astro-Club Frankfurt / Physikalischer Verein. The project is part of Jugend forscht, Germany's national youth science competition.

Deutsch: Wir bauen Teilchenbeschleuniger, die komplett mit Schutzkleinspannung auskommen, und veröffentlichen alles zum Nachbauen für Schulen und Vereine.
