chore(lint): scope the analyzer by severity, drop redundant IncludeRules - #81
Conversation
IncludeRules = @('*') is a no-op -- measured identical findings with and
without it -- so the file said nothing at all. Replaces it with the
Severity filter Microsoft's documented example uses, which drops four
Information-level findings that nothing had decided should be in scope.

Pull request overview
This pull request updates the repository’s PSScriptAnalyzer configuration to remove a redundant IncludeRules = @('*') setting and explicitly scope analysis output by severity, aligning lint results with intended signal-to-noise expectations in CI.
Changes:
- Remove the no-op
IncludeRules = @('*')setting fromPSScriptAnalyzerSettings.psd1. - Add a documented
Severity = @('Error', 'Warning')filter to drop Information-level findings from analysis output.

records remain available to build.psake.ps1; remove the Severity filter or add a
separate unfiltered parse-error check, while preserving the existing Error and
Warning lint handling.

Naming Severity without ParseError hides syntax-broken files entirely:
a file with a missing brace reports zero findings under
@('Error','Warning'). Microsoft documents this as the way to suppress
parse errors, which is the opposite of what a lint gate wants.
What
Replaces the entire contents of
PSScriptAnalyzerSettings.psd1:with a
Severityfilter and the reasoning for it.Why
IncludeRules = @('*')is a no-op.@('*')means "restrict analysis to every rule", which is what happens anyway with noIncludeRulesat all -- so the file was the only one in the fleet that said nothing.Measured on this repository, and on two others including one whose settings enable the formatting rules that ship disabled: identical totals and identical rule-by-rule breakdowns with and without the line. For the formatting rules specifically, what makes them run is
Enable = $trueinside theRulesblock, not their presence inIncludeRules.The reason it looks necessary is that PSScriptAnalyzer's shipped presets (
CodeFormatting.psd1and friends) do list rules inIncludeRules-- but those presets are meant to be used alone, to restrict analysis to just those rules. Microsoft's documented settings example omitsIncludeRulesentirely.What changes
Severity = @('Error', 'Warning'), which Microsoft's example uses and nothing here set, takes this repository from 9 findings to 5 by dropping four Information-level ones that were in scope by omission rather than decision.The remaining 5 are unchanged in kind, all warnings, none failing the build (

This repository needed no other work in the fleet-wide analyzer pass:
build.psake.ps1already pointed$PSBPreference.Test.ScriptAnalysis.SettingsPathat this file, and CI already lints through the build (Testdepends onLint), so its settings were already the ones actually used. It was the last repository still carrying the redundant line../build.ps1 -Task Build,Lintexits 0.No
