Problem

One chat request rendered to two different prompts depending on the route that served it.

  • The queued route (gateway, worker) renders the model's chat template with the request's tools exactly as the client sent them.
  • The single-server route proxies /v1/chat/completions to the SGLang child. SGLang parses tools into its own pydantic models and passes tool.model_dump() to the chat template. The dump lists each function's keys in model order (description before name), adds "strict": false, and on SGLang 0.5.20 adds a tool-level "defer_loading": null. A function without a description gains "description": null.

Every tool-capable template in the catalog serialises those dicts into the prompt. Here is the get_weather turn from examples/coding-agent-opencode/conformance.py, rendered with the Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B-FP8 template at the pinned revision 017b9c7a and enable_thinking: false:

-{"type": "function", "function": {"name": "get_weather", "description": "Current weather for one city.", "parameters": {"type": "object", "properties": {"city": {"type": "string", "description": "City name, for example Paris"}}, "required": ["city"]}}}
+{"type": "function", "function": {"description": "Current weather for one city.", "name": "get_weather", "parameters": {"type": "object", "properties": {"city": {"type": "string", "description": "City name, for example Paris"}}, "required": ["city"]}, "strict": false}, "defer_loading": null}

The queued route renders 295 tokens and the single-server route renders 306. That is 11 extra tokens per tool on SGLang 0.5.20 (sglang-cu130) and 5 on SGLang 0.5.10.post1 (sglang). The served model reads a different system prompt on each route, so greedy outputs differ.

The sweep below rendered the pinned template of every catalog model with tools: true through both paths. It used four requests: one tool, a tool without a description, a client strict: true, and a multi-turn tool exchange.

Template family How it writes a tool Single-server difference
Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507, Qwen3-VL-8B, Qwen3.5-4B, Qwen3.5-122B-A10B, Qwen3.6-27B, Qwen3.6-35B-A3B, Qwen3.8-27B tool | tojson key order, strict, defer_loading, "description": null
GLM-5.3-Flash (glm47 parser) iterates the function's keys, skips strict and defer_loading key order (description first), "description": null
Gemma 4 (31B, 26B-A4B, E4B, E2B) reads name and description by field a missing description renders as None

The sweep found the same class in the message list. The queued route folds a developer message to system at the gateway, but the single-server route forwarded it unchanged. The Qwen3.5, 3.6 and 3.8 templates then raise Unexpected message role., and the Qwen3 and GLM templates render a role the queued route never sends. The message dumps otherwise render identically.

A named tool_choice also differed. SGLang renders only the named tool, while the queued worker renders every tool, as the template receives them from any direct apply_chat_template call.

The GPU check below found one more difference. SGLang 0.5.20 caches the render of a multimodal model's chat request (Qwen3.5, 3.6 and 3.8 and Gemma 4 are multimodal) under a key built with orjson.OPT_SORT_KEYS. Two requests whose tools or replayed tool-call arguments differ only in key order therefore share one cached prompt, and the second request is rendered with the first request's key order.

Change

  • New SGLang child hook adapters/sglang/_compat/sie_chat_tools.py, opted into by the generation adapter through SIE_SGLANG_CHAT_TOOLS_AS_SENT=1 like the existing child hooks. It wraps OpenAIServingChat.handle_request to read the request body's tools, and it wraps _apply_jinja_template to hand the template those tools whenever SGLang would render any. With tool_choice: "none" no tools are rendered, as before. The sent tools are used only when each one validates, through SGLang's own model, to the tool SGLang parsed at the same position. Any other body keeps SGLang's dump. Both pinned releases (0.5.10.post1, 0.5.20) have these two methods with these signatures.
  • The same hook turns off SGLang 0.5.20's chat render cache (_render_and_encode_chat_template(use_cache=False)). The method does not exist on 0.5.10.post1, where the hook leaves it out. A cache hit needs a byte-identical request, and an agent's transcript grows on every turn, so agent workloads lose almost no hits.
  • openai_local._prepare_chat_body folds developer messages to system, as the gateway, the worker and the local Responses route already do.

No model YAML, gateway or worker change. The worker's rendering was already the one the model's own template produces from the request.

Tests

tests/adapters/test_sglang_chat_tools.py renders one request through both routes and asserts byte-identical prompts:

  • Single-server route: the real /v1/chat/completions handler with a mock child transport. The exact body sent to the child is then rendered by a stand-in for SGLang's chat serving path, carrying the pinned releases' Function and Tool models and their model_dump() tool selection, with the hook installed.
  • Queued route: a gateway-shaped work item through StreamingProcessor.process. The prompt is captured at the adapter.

The cases are six requests (one tool, a tool exchange, strict, named tool_choice, tool_choice: none, a developer message) × the three template families × both SGLang releases. The 0.5.20 stand-in also has the sorted-key render cache. A second test sends two requests that differ only in key order through one child and checks that each keeps its own prompt. Further tests cover the hook's fallback for a foreign body, the sitecustomize install in a child interpreter, and the adapter's child environment.

Mutation check: each of these mutations fails the suite.

Mutation Result
Hook returns SGLang's tools 25 failed
Hook keeps SGLang's named-choice subset 6 failed
Hook skips the per-tool validation 1 failed
handle_request captures nothing 24 failed
No developer fold 6 failed
sitecustomize does not install 1 failed
Render cache stays on 2 failed
Adapter does not set the opt-in variable 1 failed

Local runs passed: ruff check, ruff format --check, mise run typecheck -- packages/sie_server, and pytest packages/sie_server/tests/adapters packages/sie_server/tests/api/test_openai_local.py tests/api/test_openai_local_schema_prompt.py tests/api/test_remote_chat.py tests/api/test_fake_chat_route.py (7,178 passed).

GPU check on one H100

The check ran this branch's sie-server serve -b sglang-cu130 --preload Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B-FP8:h100-256k-batch on one H100, with the model YAML byte-identical to main. The first boot ran 7bf57dbf. The table rows come from a second boot, after eb78b26f's hook file was installed in the same container. For each request it took three readings:

  • usage.prompt_tokens on the single-server route;
  • the SGLang child's own input_ids (return_input_ids_in_sglext);
  • the token ids of the queued worker's rendering (apply_chat_template on the request's tools as sent).
Request Single-server prompt tokens Worker rendering Child ids equal worker ids
Conformance weather turn 295 (306 before this change) 295 yes
Tool exchange, two tools 378 378 yes
Named tool_choice 326 326 yes
Developer message 299 299 yes
Same tool with keys sorted, after the weather turn 295 295 yes

Before the render-cache fix, the last row returned the weather turn's cached ids: the same length, a different key order.

BFCL simple (400) and multiple (200) on the single-server route ran at 7bf57dbf. The render-cache change cannot move these rows, because every BFCL request uses the same key order. The runs used -c 1, greedy decoding and an 8,192-token cap, scored with generation_eval_gate. The queued-route figures are an earlier run of the same harness and profile.

presence_penalty Single-server before Single-server after Queued route
0 0.925 / 0.920 0.945 / 0.945 (378 / 189) 0.945 / 0.945 (378 / 189)
1.5 (profile default) 0.8975 / 0.910 0.925 / 0.930 (370 / 186) 0.925 / 0.935 (370 / 187)

The two routes now agree within one BFCL row.

Not in this change

The queued route still drops a replayed assistant reasoning_content, while the single-server route passes it to the template. This is the known contract gap for thinking profiles, and it does not affect non-thinking profiles.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved consistency of tool-enabled chat prompts across serving routes, preserving the request’s tool definitions when they match the parsed tools.
    • Local chat requests now handle developer-role messages as system-role messages when forwarded.
    • Added coverage for prompt consistency across supported model templates and serving versions, along with fallback behavior.

The single-server chat route proxies to the engine's OpenAI chat endpoint,
which re-serialises each request tool through its own models before the
chat template sees it: the function's keys move to model order, and
"strict": false (plus "defer_loading": null on 0.5.20) are added. Templates
that write tools with tojson or iterate their keys put those bytes in the
prompt, so one tools turn rendered 11 tokens longer per tool than on the
queued route, which renders the tools as the request carries them.

The engine child now hands the template the request's tools as sent
whenever it renders any, after checking each one validates to the tool the
engine parsed. A named tool_choice renders every tool, as the queued worker
does. The single-server route also folds developer messages to system, as
the gateway does for the queued route.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes normalize developer messages for local chat requests and add an SGLang compatibility hook that can preserve request tools during template rendering. The child process enables the hook through an environment variable. Tests compare prompts across routes, templates, and SGLang versions.

SGLang 0.5.20 caches a multimodal model's chat render under a key that
sorts every object's keys. With the request's tools rendered as sent, two
requests whose tools or replayed tool-call arguments differ only in key
order shared one prompt, so the second request rendered with the first's
order. The chat tools hook now turns that cache off.

Separate argument-order coverage from tool-definition ordering.

The test includes _QWEN_TEMPLATE and _GLM_TEMPLATE, not _GEMMA_TEMPLATE. _GLM_TEMPLATE renders tool definitions but not assistant tool-call arguments. sort_keys=True can therefore make the GLM prompts differ because it reorders tool-definition keys. Keep the argument-order test limited to Qwen and copy first without sorting. Add a separate test for tool-definition ordering if that behavior needs coverage.
