Summary

Hybrid generation counting (#620) loads a model's own tokenizer on the remote lane. GLM-5.3-Flash's tokenizer config uses the transformers-5 format (tokenizer_class: TokenizersBackend, backend: tokenizers), which transformers 4 cannot load, so for such a model the worker fell back to the upstream's counts.

  • packages/sie_server/bundles/remote.yaml declares transformers: '>=5.14,<6', the same pin transformers5.yaml carries.
  • The chart runs the remote lane on the cpu-transformers5 image (workers.pools.remote.bundles.remote.imageBundle: transformers5) instead of cpu-default. That image is already in .github/release-matrix.json, so nothing new is built or published. imageBundle: remote is still refused at render time; the message now points to transformers5.
  • The feat: route remote profiles to a dedicated remote worker bundle #492 invariant "the remote bundle has no dependencies" becomes "the chart's remote lane image provides every remote bundle dependency" (test_the_remote_lane_image_provides_every_remote_bundle_dependency). test_only_the_remote_lane_worker_receives_upstreams_and_credentials now asserts the remote lane renders the -cpu-transformers5 image, and the unsafe-configuration case still refuses imageBundle: remote.
  • The kind remote smoke pins its remote lane to imageBundle: default, with the reason in its values: it serves a remote_only model, which needs no tokenizer, so it does not need to build the transformers5 image.

Behaviour change for chart users

The remote lane's default image moves from cpu-default to cpu-transformers5. This is noted in the chart README (Remote backends) and in the install notes. An install that pins imageBundle: default keeps serving, but a hybrid model whose tokenizer uses the transformers-5 format reports the upstream's counts on it.

Both images publish the same platform set, linux/amd64 only, and cpu-transformers5 is smaller (v0.9.0: 0.91 GB compressed against 1.11 GB for cpu-default, read from the registry manifests).

Tests

  • tools/ci/tests/test_helm_render.py (432 passed with the release-candidate tests) and tools/ci/check_release_contract.py (passed).
  • packages/sie_server/tests/config/test_remote_bundle.py, test_bundle_coverage.py, core/test_bundle_requirements.py: 44 passed.
  • packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_tokenizer_transformers5_format.py builds a transformers-5-format tokenizer offline (a tokenizers WordLevel model, TokenizersBackend config, chat_template.jinja) and loads it through sie_server.core.tokenizer.load_tokenizer. It skips where transformers is below 5, which includes the root test environment, so CI does not run it. Local run under transformers 5.18.0 from the uv cache: 1 passed.

Evidence for the motivating model, run offline against GLM-5.3-Flash's tokenizer files at revision eb9eb208eb0d988989d07a6a12d0fdeb5f52574a:

transformers 4.57.6: ValueError: Tokenizer class TokenizersBackend does not exist or is not currently imported.
transformers 5.18.0: LOADED TokenizersBackend, chat template: True
  rendered tail: '...<|system|>Reasoning Effort: Max<|user|>What is 2+2?<|assistant|><think>'
  prompt tokens: 19

CI gap

The kind smoke keeps the remote lane on the default image, so no CI job runs the remote lane on cpu-transformers5 at runtime. The chart render tests cover the image choice, and the tokenizer test above runs only where transformers 5 is installed.

Not an authentication or authorization change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Remote workers now use a Transformers 5 image by default, enabling token counting for models with Transformers 5-format tokenizers. Workers pinned to another image continue to run but report upstream token counts for those models.
    • The remote bundle now includes Transformers 5 support.
  • Documentation

    • Updated deployment guidance to describe the default image, tokenizer support, and image selection requirements.

…ing loads transformers-5 tokenizers

A worker counts a hybrid model's upstream generation with the model's own
tokenizer. Tokenizer configs in the transformers-5 format, such as
GLM-5.3-Flash's (tokenizer_class: TokenizersBackend), do not load on
transformers 4, so the worker fell back to the upstream's counts for them.

The remote bundle now declares transformers >=5.14,<6, the pin the
transformers5 bundle already carries, and the chart runs the remote lane on
the cpu-transformers5 image, which provides it, instead of cpu-default. The
render still refuses imageBundle: remote, and its message now names
transformers5. The no-dependencies invariant for the remote bundle becomes a
check that the chart's remote lane image provides every remote bundle
dependency. The kind remote smoke keeps imageBundle: default: it serves a
remote_only model, which needs no tokenizer.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The remote bundle now requires Transformers 5. The Helm chart configures the remote lane to use the transformers5 image bundle. Tests and documentation cover tokenizer support, image dependencies, and the updated configuration.

Changes

Transformers 5 remote lane

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remote bundle and tokenizer support
packages/sie_server/bundles/remote.yaml, packages/sie_server/tests/config/test_remote_bundle.py, packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_tokenizer_transformers5_format.py
The remote bundle declares transformers >=5.14,<6. Tests cover remote adapter configuration and loading a Transformers 5-format tokenizer.
Remote lane image configuration
deploy/helm/sie-cluster/values.yaml, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/templates/worker-statefulset.yaml, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/README.md, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/templates/NOTES.txt, packages/sie_server/REMOTE_BACKENDS.md
The chart selects the transformers5 image bundle for the remote lane. Documentation describes tokenizer counting behavior, and the render error directs operators to use transformers5 when they select imageBundle: remote.
Image validation and smoke-test configuration
tools/ci/tests/test_helm_render.py, tools/ci/kind_remote_smoke.py
Helm tests check the configured image and its dependencies. The kind smoke test explicitly selects the default image bundle for its tokenizer-free remote model.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dd67b

Remote workers now default to the Transformers 5 image, but CI does not verify hybrid-generation counts on that image. Add focused smoke coverage before relying on worker-side counts; the remaining risk is bounded to this unverified behavior.

Add a Transformers 5 hybrid-generation smoke.

The current render tests validate configuration only. The kind smoke overrides the remote lane to imageBundle: default, uses a remote_only model, and checks an encode request and upstream call count. It does not load a Transformers-5-format tokenizer or assert worker-side generation counts.

Add a focused smoke that runs the remote lane with imageBundle: transformers5, sends a hybrid generation request through a Transformers-5-format tokenizer, and asserts the returned worker token counts. Keep the existing remote_only smoke unchanged.
