Install a team's skill once and every AI coworker finds it — instead of a maintainer hand-copying it into .claude/skills, .cursor/skills, .factory/skills and five more, then keeping all eight in sync forever.

Agent Skills stopped being a Claude Code feature. The format was released as an open standard in December 2025, is now stewarded by the Agentic AI Foundation at agentskills.io, and has ~45 client products. agentx had no concept of skills at all — the only occurrence of the word in the Go tree was a comment folding Amp's skills into CustomCommands. So every consumer had to hand-maintain each vendor's directory layout, and quietly installed nothing for the agents it hadn't gotten to.

What this ships

  • skills.RootsFor(agent, scope) → Roots{Write, Read} for 12 agents at project and personal scope.
  • skills.ParseManifest / Manifest.Validate — the SKILL.md format, with every violation reported in one pass.
  • TestEveryRegisteredAgentIsClassified — the anti-rot gate agentx has never had for a capability table.

The one-root rule

The ecosystem converged on .agents/skills, so a skill installed once is found by nearly every agent. Write is the single directory to install into. Read is for discovery and cleanup only — finding a skill a user placed by hand, or a copy left by an older layout.

Fanning one skill across each vendor's native directory puts the same file on disk several times — several things to keep in sync, several things in a diff, and several answers when they disagree.

  • Two holdouts, modeled explicitly. Claude Code reads only .claude/skills (upstream request); Kiro only .kiro/skills. Both get their native directory as Write. A test names them, so an agent gaining canonical support upstream shows up as a failing test rather than as a permanently duplicated install.
  • ok == false means install nothing, rather than guessing a directory. Six agents and all four orchestrators are recorded as deliberately unsupported, with a reason each.

Two deliberate omissions

  • No SkillsManager. Skills are directory bundles, and consumers that install them already own digest tracking, retirement and conflict handling for their whole managed inventory. A second installer here would be a parallel mechanism that drifts from the first. Worth noting the existing BaseRulesManager could not have been reused anyway — it is file-flat and its uninstall path skips directories, so it is structurally incapable of removing a bundle.
  • No Capabilities.Skills flag. RootsFor returning ok == false already answers it. Adding the boolean means touching all ~20 agent implementations plus the comprehensive test table to carry information the table already holds.

Why the conformance test matters more than the table

agentx has no invariant tying any capability table back to the registry. That is how agents/register.go can omit Cline and Droid while staying green, and how config/paths.go drifted to 9-of-17 coverage. Adding an agent now fails the suite until somebody records where its skills go — or records that it has none, with a reason.

Red-first, both gates:

Gate Deliberate break Observed failure
TestEveryRegisteredAgentIsClassified removed Amp from rootsByAgent amp is registered but unclassified: add it to rootsByAgent, or to deliberatelyUnsupported with a reason
TestWritePrefersTheCanonicalRoot pointed Cursor's write root at .cursor/skills cursor must install into the canonical project root, not a native one

Both restored, both green.

Sourcing

Every path came from the vendor's own documentation, not from a search summary or a secondary aggregator — Anthropic, OpenAI, Cursor, GitHub, Factory, OpenCode, Amp, Gemini CLI, Goose, pi, Kiro. Where an earlier draft relied on a weaker source (Gemini and Goose), the vendor page was fetched before the entry was written; both turned out to read the canonical root at project scope.

Test Plan

  • make check (fmt + lint + test) — 1196 tests pass, 2 pre-existing skips
  • go test ./skills/ -cover — 100.0% of statements
  • Red-first proofs above
  • gopkg.in/yaml.v3 promoted from indirect to direct; it was already in the module graph via testify, so no new module is downloaded

Follow-ups, not in this PR

  • README's "Package Structure" section is stale independently of this change — it claims a single package, "All 14 agents", and an import path of agentx/pkg. Left alone deliberately.
  • Rules coverage is 7-of-18 agents and omits Codex, Gemini, Goose, OpenCode, Amp and pi.
  • rules.Config.AlwaysApplyField is declared but never read by the content builder.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a skills package. It defines agent-specific discovery roots and parses and validates SKILL.md manifests. Tests cover registry classification, root behavior, parsing, and validation. Documentation and release notes describe the new package.

Changes

Agent Skills package

Layer / File(s) Summary
Skill root registry
skills/roots.go, skills/roots_test.go
Defines project and personal roots, agent-specific write and read directories, support lookup, and stable supported-agent ordering. Tests verify classification, precedence, scope isolation, duplicates, and unsupported agents.
SKILL.md manifest parsing and validation
skills/spec.go, skills/spec_test.go, go.mod
Adds YAML frontmatter parsing and manifest validation for required fields, naming rules, directory matching, and length limits. Tests cover valid, malformed, and boundary cases. yaml.v3 becomes a direct dependency.

Callers can corrupt shared root results, while valid Unicode skills and Codex installations using a custom legacy root may not work correctly. These contract defects should be resolved before merge.

In `@CHANGELOG.md`:
- Line 8: Update the release heading for the 2026-09-17 changelog entry to use
the intended unique SemVer instead of the existing 0.2.0, and preserve
chronological ordering with the existing entries. Determine the replacement
version from the project’s release metadata rather than inferring it from the
changelog alone.

In `@README.md`:
- Around line 337-339: Add the missing github.com/sageox/agentx import to the
README Go example’s import block so agentx.AgentTypeCursor resolves, while
preserving the existing skills import and snippet behavior.

In `@skills/roots.go`:
- Around line 131-132: Update the lookup flow that assigns roots from
byScope[scope] to clone roots.Read before returning roots, ensuring callers
cannot mutate the global registry through the returned slice while preserving
the existing roots and ok values.
- Line 76: Update the Codex personal-root handling around ScopePersonal and
RootsFor so the legacy root resolves from CODEX_HOME, falling back to its
default when unset, instead of using a fixed ~/.codex/skills path. Ensure the
resolved legacy root is included for both reading and cleanup while preserving
CanonicalPersonal as the current root.

In `@skills/spec.go`:
- Around line 76-96: Update name validation around invalidNameReason to
normalize names with Unicode NFKC before checking them, permit Unicode lowercase
alphanumeric characters, and count Unicode code points for the name length
limit. Replace byte-based length checks for Description and Compatibility with
rune counts while preserving the existing validation messages and limits.
- Around line 135-142: The frontmatter parser must recognize only a complete
delimiter line equal to "---". Update the parsing logic around the existing
frontmatter extraction to process normalized input by lines, preserve an empty
body for "---\n---\n", and reject unterminated frontmatter or lines such as
"---invalid" as closing fences.
