Summary

Accounting question 8 now gives the ATO's figure of 10 business days for processing most returns lodged online, and notes that the ATO's How to lodge your tax return page still says 12 for myTax. The ATO's Your tax return and Check the progress of your tax return pages changed from 12 to 10 in the week to 2 November 2026, which the weekly ATO source sweep reported in #480.

  _data/accounting_questions.json, question 8
- Most returns lodged online are processed within 12 business days. ...
+ The ATO says most returns lodged online are processed within 10 business days, though its How to lodge your tax return page still says 12 for myTax. ...
+ "fact_checked": "2026-11-02"
  changelog: new 2 November row saying the same

Text mirrors, feed, sitemap lastmod, the changelog's dateModified and the design baseline are regenerated.

Evidence

  • Before: question 8 said 12; both ATO pages read on 2 November say 'Most returns lodged online process within 10 business days'. Paper refunds stay at 50 business days (How to lodge your tax return).
    After: site-tools check_site --offline exits 0 on 1db1a5d ('site checks passed (external links skipped)'). Its first run caught the changelog dateModified still at 31 October against the sitemap; fixed.

Door: two-way. Blast radius: one answer

Live link checks (check_site without --offline) were not run; the change adds no links.

The ATO's Your tax return and Check the progress of your tax return pages now say 10 business days, not 12 (weekly ATO source sweep, #480). Accounting question 8 follows them, with a check date of 2 November 2026 and a changelog row noting that the How to lodge your tax return page still gives 12 for myTax. Text mirrors, feed, sitemap and design baseline are regenerated.

## Summary

Accounting questions 17 and 19 said a laundry claim of $150 or less, and
a total work-related expense claim of $300 or less, need no written
evidence. From 1 July 2026 neither exception applies, for any taxpayer.
Question 19 also started the 5-year retention period at lodgment instead
of the return's due date.

```diff
- Q17: ... a laundry claim of $150 or less needs no written evidence.
+ Q17: ... for 2025-26 and earlier years, a laundry claim of $150 or less needs no written evidence; from 2026-27 that exception no longer applies.
- Q19: If your total work-related expense claim is $300 or less, you can claim it without written evidence ... Keep any written evidence for 5 years from the date you lodge your return.
+ Q19: For 2025-26 and earlier years, [the $300 rule]. From 2026-27 that exception no longer applies. Eligible taxpayers get a standard deduction of up to $1,000, or their labour income if less, without records. Work-related expenses claimed in the return generally need written evidence, although the travel and overtime meal allowance exceptions remain, and most of them reduce the standard deduction; union and professional association fees do not. Keep any written evidence for 5 years from your return's due date, or from the date you lodge it if that is later, and longer while a dispute with the ATO about the claim is unresolved.
```

Both answers get `fact_checked: 2026-11-02`, the deductions topic date
and a changelog row; the text mirrors, feed, sitemap and design baseline
are regenerated with `site-tools`.

## Evidence

- ATO, Standard deduction for work-related expenses (last updated 2
November 2026): the $300, $150 laundry and award transport record
keeping exceptions won't apply from 1 July 2026, for all taxpayers; the
standard deduction is up to $1,000, capped at assessable labour income,
and certain claimed work expenses reduce it, but not union or
professional association fees.
- ITAA 1997 s 900-25(2) and (3): the 5 years start on the return's due
date, or on lodgment if later, and extend while a dispute is unresolved.
- TD 2026/4 sets the 2026-27 reasonable travel and overtime meal
amounts, so those exceptions continue.
- `site-tools build_feed --check`, `build_llms_full --check` and
`check_site --offline`: exit 0 on a5f1848.

## Merge danger

**Door:** two-way. **Blast radius:** 2 answers.

#488 also adds a changelog row and regenerates the feed, sitemap, text
mirrors and design baseline; whichever merges second needs a rebase with
the changelog merge driver and a rerun of `build_feed --write`,
`build_llms_full --write` and `check_design --update-baseline`.

## Unverified

- `site-tools check_design` was not confirmed locally: on Windows it
fails with the same 277 errors on unmodified main, so the Linux CI run
is the check.
- Live link checks were skipped (`--offline`).
