Change

Images now open up to the GPU's own texture limit (maxTextureDimension2D, usually 16,384 pixels per side on desktop GPUs) instead of WebGPU's default 8,192, which turned away common 45–61 MP cameras by a few hundred pixels: Nikon D850, Z7 II, Sony A7R IV, A1, Canon 5DS, and Fujifilm GFX 50S. A larger image fails with its size, as early as its format allows:

  • PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, and BMP: from the first 512 KiB, read with image-size (MIT, an 11 KB lazy chunk), before decoding: "This device opens images up to 16,384 pixels per side; this one is 30,000 × 6,000."
  • HEIC: after parsing its boxes, before WebCodecs. SVG: once its size is known, before rasterizing.
  • AVIF, and any header that can't be read in that slice: when the staging texture is created.
  • RAW and TIFF: raw-webgpu 0.2.0 rejects them right after reading their size, before decoding: "RAW image is 23296 × 17472 pixels; this device's textures stop at 16384."

Verification

  • bun run check, bun run build, bun run test, and bun run test:browser (83 tests) pass. The e2e test reads the adapter's limit and opens a PNG and an SVG one pixel over it.
  • With raw-webgpu 0.2.0 in Chromium on an Apple M4 Pro (limit 16,384): a 16,385 × 1 TIFF fails in about 100 ms with "TIFF is 16385 × 1 pixels; this device's textures stop at 16384.", and a 16,384 × 1 TIFF opens. With the device limit lowered to 16, bayer.dng and orientation-6.tif fail with raw-webgpu's native messages naming 128 × 96 and 19 × 17.
  • These opened and rendered correctly with load times of 0.7–7.4 s: Nikon D850, Canon 5DS, Fujifilm GFX 50S, Sony A7R IV, Sony A1, Leica Q2, Sigma fp L, Sony RX1R III, and Fujifilm GFX100 II (11,662 × 8,746, 4.5 s).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Oversized images are rejected with an error showing the GPU’s per-side texture limit and the image dimensions. Failed loads leave the currently open image unchanged.
  • New Features
    • Added support for opening images with .ori and .sti extensions.
  • Documentation
    • Condensed the scripting API and product documentation, with some detailed behavior and workflow descriptions removed. Clarified the updated workspace and editing terminology.

…size

Browser formats, HEIC, and TIFF are checked from their header before
decoding; SVG at its raster size; RAW once LibRaw has decoded it. The
device now takes the adapter's texture limit, so an oversized RAW reaches
OpenLight's check instead of failing on WebGPU's default limit.

Walkthrough

Image loading now checks image dimensions against the GPU adapter’s maximum 2D texture dimension. The app passes this limit to decoders and checks dimensions before texture creation. The pull request also revises project documentation and browser tests.

Changes: Image Dimension Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
GPU limit initialization
package.json, src/main.tsx
Adds image-size and initializes WebGPU with the adapter’s maximum 2D texture dimension. React Suspense provides the initialized GPU to the app.
Decoder and upload checks
src/core/image/decode/*
Passes the GPU limit to decoders. Checks supported image headers, HEIC and SVG dimensions, and requested texture dimensions. Adds the ori and sti RAW extensions.
Oversized image validation
tests/loaders.e2e.ts, API.md
Tests oversized PNG and SVG failures and verifies that the previously loaded photo remains. API loading documentation describes the texture-dimension limit.

Oversized AVIF images can allocate pixels before rejection, while local browser tests may use stale servers or miss histogram regressions and the loader test assumes repeated adapter requests share limits. These risks should be resolved before merging.

Avoid a second full-file allocation during header checks.

sized calls checkHeader(file) before decoding. For HEIC, decodeHeic then calls file.arrayBuffer() again, so the header check and decoder each materialize the complete file. Use a format-aware metadata read that avoids this duplicate allocation. Do not use a fixed-size slice unless the fallback preserves formats whose metadata occurs later in the file.

The device already takes the adapter's maxTextureDimension2D, usually
16,384 pixels, so the check now reads it from the device rather than a
constant. Headers are still checked before decoding; SVG and unreadable
headers are checked once decoded. RAW is left to raw-webgpu, which
rejects a sensor beyond the device limit before uploading it.

🟡 Minor · Pass the sampled adapter to GpuProvider. · main.tsx:48-56

src/main.tsx:48-56
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the sampled adapter to GpuProvider.

gpuOptions() reads the limit from one adapter but returns only requiredLimits. GpuProvider forwards these options to vgpu.init(), which requests another adapter when adapter is absent. If that adapter has a lower limit, device creation can fail. InitOptions.adapter already accepts the sampled adapter, so this is a localized fix.

Suggested fix
-  return { requiredLimits: { maxTextureDimension2D } };
+  return { adapter, requiredLimits: { maxTextureDimension2D } };

… to 0.2.0

The header check no longer copies the whole file; a header past the slice
is left to the decoder and the upload check. raw-webgpu 0.2.0 rejects an
oversized RAW or TIFF before decoding it, naming its size.
