Fixes RocketChat#1158

Problem

EmbeddedChatApi.logout() only awaited this.auth.logout(), which clears the auth token. The DDP connection and its _activeSubscriptions were left running, so after a "logout" the client kept receiving live messages and events for a session that was no longer authenticated — a privacy leak, and inconsistent state if another user logged in without a full page refresh.

The class already has a close() method that stops _activeSubscriptions and calls sdk.connection.close(). logout() simply never called it.

Fix

logout() now tears the connection down via the existing close(), with two deliberate details:

  • the teardown runs in a finally block, so the socket is also closed when the logout request itself fails (a failed logout previously left a fully live session behind);
  • close() errors are logged rather than propagated, so they cannot mask the logout result. Other call sites already treat close() as rejectable (EmbeddedChat.js wraps it in .catch()).

Verification

packages/api has no test runner ("test": "echo \"Error: no test specified\""), so I verified behaviourally with a harness that bundles the real EmbeddedChatApi.ts (deps stubbed) and asserts the teardown contract. It is reproducible and included below.

Run against this branch — all pass:

PASS successful logout stops all subscriptions
PASS successful logout closes the connection
PASS  subscription list is cleared
PASS failed logout still closes the connection
PASS failed logout still stops subscriptions
PASS failed logout still returns the error
PASS close() failure does not propagate out of logout

ALL CHECKS PASSED

Run against unpatched develop — the same harness fails, confirming it genuinely exercises the bug:

FAIL successful logout stops all subscriptions
FAIL successful logout closes the connection
FAIL  subscription list is cleared
FAIL failed logout still closes the connection
FAIL failed logout still stops subscriptions
PASS failed logout still returns the error
PASS close() failure does not propagate out of logout

5 CHECK(S) FAILED

Also run: tsc --noEmit on packages/api (clean), prettier --check (clean), yarn lint (0 errors; warning count unchanged from develop), and yarn workspace @embeddedchat/api build (succeeds).

If you'd prefer this as a committed test, I'm happy to add a runner to packages/api in a follow-up — I kept it out of this PR to hold the diff to the one-file fix.

Prior art

@Aryan-Verma-999's earlier RocketChat#1171 identified the same root cause and was closed unmerged. This PR keeps that insight and adds the finally handling so a failed logout cannot leave a live socket behind.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Logging out now closes the realtime connection even if the logout request fails. Errors encountered while closing are logged without replacing the logout result.
    • Closing a connection during setup now stops the superseded connection attempt and removes its subscriptions.

EmbeddedChatApi.logout() only cleared the auth token via auth.logout().
The DDP connection and its active subscriptions were left running, so the
client kept receiving live messages and events for a session that was no
longer authenticated.

logout() now tears the connection down via the existing close() method.
The teardown runs in a finally block so the socket is also closed when the
logout request itself fails, and close() errors are logged rather than
propagated so they cannot mask the logout result.

Walkthrough

EmbeddedChatApi now invalidates in-flight connection attempts when close() runs. It checks for stale attempts during setup and stops subscriptions registered by a stale attempt. logout() attempts to close the connection even when the logout request fails.

Changes: Connection lifecycle cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Connection invalidation and subscription cleanup
packages/api/src/EmbeddedChatApi.ts
close() advances the connection generation, stops active subscriptions, and closes the SDK connection. _doConnect checks the generation after awaited setup steps and stops subscriptions registered by a stale attempt.
Logout cleanup and error handling
packages/api/src/EmbeddedChatApi.ts
logout() attempts to close the connection in a finally block. Errors from closing are logged.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to dceb7

After logout, a connection attempt that was in flight can block later logins from establishing a session until the page reloads. A previously scheduled SDK retry can also reopen the socket after logout. Fix both before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to dceb7

The change reduces post-logout realtime exposure without adding privileges or expanding server access. A bounded recovery gap remains: canceling connection setup does not release its pending connection request, so a subsequent login can reuse canceled work or remain blocked until the chat instance is recreated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Invalidating connection setup does not release its single-flight ownership. After close advances the generation, a subsequent login can still receive the old _connectPromise; when stale setup returns, that login completes without starting its own connection setup or subscriptions. If close interrupts the SDK handshake before its response, the promise can instead remain pending and block later connects on the instance. The promise guard and transport limitation predate this PR, but the new cancellation checkpoints and direct logout teardown expose this mismatch in the changed authentication recovery lifecycle.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated lifecycle effects are bounded to an EmbeddedChatApi instance, its configured host and room, and its authenticated account subscriptions. The inspected flow does not demonstrate additional server privileges or access across tenants; external public-API consumers were not comprehensively available.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A retry scheduled before explicit close can survive when the underlying socket is already closed: close does not cancel that timer, and reconnect permits the closed status. A subsequent connection can attempt cached-account authentication. This mechanism also existed at the base; stopping tracked subscriptions reduces its exposure rather than establishing a new privacy leak. Successful authentication after server logout was not demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The generation is a local continuation control, not an authentication revocation mechanism. It prevents stale wrapper setup from advancing after an awaited operation returns, but does not itself cancel that SDK operation or erase credentials.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The React consumer treats connect fulfillment as authenticated readiness. Because a stale attempt now fulfills by returning early, connection cancellation and visible readiness can diverge during identity transitions, reinforcing the need for explicit ownership of replacement setup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Associate pending setup with its generation, explicitly settle cancellation, and ensure a replacement login receives fresh setup rather than canceled work. Cleanup from an older attempt should not clear or close a newer attempt's resources.
  • proposed — For a stronger logout boundary, make subscription cleanup failure-isolated and define explicit ownership for retry cancellation and SDK credential retirement, including failed server logout. These address existing limitations rather than verified security regressions introduced by this PR.

close() now invalidates a connect() which is still awaiting, so that
subscriptions are not registered after the socket has been torn down.

Previously, if logout happened while _doConnect() was awaiting
joinRoom() (or the connection/login steps), the connect would resume
afterwards and register the stream subscriptions on the closed
connection, which the DDP client replays on the next connection.

Cancel scheduled SDK reconnects during teardown.

If the socket disconnects before logout, the SDK can schedule a retry. In version 1.0.9-rc.2, connection.close() does not clear that timer. The timer later calls reconnect() even when the connection status is closed, so a WebSocket can reopen after logout. _connectionGeneration does not guard this SDK callback. Ensure explicit close cancels pending SDK retries. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reset the pending connect promise when closing.

If close() runs while sdk.connection.connect() awaits the handshake, the socket closes and the connect promise never settles. ConnectionImpl.connect() settles only on a DDP connected or failed reply. Its ws.onclose handler returns early when status is 'closed', so it does not reject. _doConnect stays pending, and _connectPromise stays set. Later connect() calls return that promise, so they cannot start a new session.

Clear _connectPromise in close(). In the finally handler, clear it only when it still belongs to that attempt. Otherwise, an attempt superseded by close() can clear a newer promise when it finally settles. The generation check already stops the superseded _doConnect from subscribing.

🐛 Suggested fix
   async connect(isChannelPrivate = false) {
     // Guard against concurrent connect() calls (e.g. React StrictMode double-invoke)
     if (this._connectPromise) {
       return this._connectPromise;
     }
-    this._connectPromise = this._doConnect(isChannelPrivate).finally(() => {
-      this._connectPromise = null;
-    });
-    return this._connectPromise;
+    const promise: Promise<void> = this._doConnect(isChannelPrivate).finally(() => {

+        this._connectPromise = null;
+      }
+    });
+    this._connectPromise = promise;
