🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the emergency shutdown bounded and retain live workers.

If a worker ignores SIGTERM, terminate() does not stop it. Line 257 then waits up to timeout for each worker, so closing an iterator can take approximately num_workers × timeout. The subsequent self.processes.clear() also discards workers that remain alive. Use a shared deadline for the second joins. Escalate termination or retain any live processes for later cleanup. Python documents that POSIX terminate() sends SIGTERM and that a timed join() can return while a process is still running. (docs.python.org)

In `@fastembed/parallel_processor.py` at line 257, Update the worker shutdown flow
around process.join and self.processes.clear() to use one shared deadline for
the second joins, preventing wait time from growing with the worker count. Do
not discard processes that remain alive; escalate their shutdown or retain them
in self.processes for later cleanup.

Keeping SIGTERM. The workers don't install a SIGTERM handler, and spawn/forkserver start them
from a fresh process, so no handler is inherited from the parent. terminate() kills them right
away: exit -15 within ~6 ms, with fastembed, onnxruntime and the model loaded. Without a handler,
SIGTERM is as abrupt as SIGKILL, so escalating wouldn't change anything in practice.

@joein, thanks for the worker details and the measured exit time. I agree that SIGKILL escalation is not warranted for workers with the default SIGTERM behavior.

I’ll keep this finding open because the second join(timeout=timeout) still has a separate timeout for each worker. self.processes.clear() can also discard a process if a timed join returns while it is still alive. I understand your decision to keep the current shutdown path.

Learning: In `fastembed/parallel_processor.py`, the parallel workers use spawn or forkserver in the discussed shutdown scenario. The workers do not install a SIGTERM handler, and these start methods do not inherit a SIGTERM handler from the parent. The author measured exit code -15 within approximately 6 ms after `terminate()`, with fastembed, onnxruntime, and the model loaded.
