Thanks for this, and sorry for the slow review. The approach is right, so I rebased onto main and pushed a few commits on top. Please reset your local branch to this one before pushing again.
Lazy and eager outputs match across the models I tried. |

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughToken counting now initializes or uses the tokenizer without loading the ONNX model across text, reranking, late-interaction, multimodal, and sparse paths. ColBERT and BM42 initialize tokenizer-derived state for post-processing. MiniCOIL initializes post-processing state when output processing needs it. Tests check that token counting leaves the model unloaded. The MiniCOIL tests use eager models, so they do not execute the new
vocab_resolver is Nonebranch. The lazy tests cover SPLADE and OpenSearch only. Add a MiniCOIL test that callstoken_count, then runs parallel embedding, and checks canonical sparse output.Suggested fix

Fixes #584.
This updates lazy
token_count()paths so they load tokenizer files from the resolved model directory without initializing ONNX sessions. The change covers text embeddings, cross-encoder rerankers, sparse BM42, late-interaction embeddings, and multimodal late-interaction wrappers. The lazy-load regression tests now exercise
token_count()before embedding/reranking and still assert that the ONNX model session has not been loaded yet.Validation
