Summary

  • Every read, append and cut of audit.log, signing_audit.log and their marker, temporary, backup and kept files now opens the path only as a regular file: O_NOFOLLOW | O_NONBLOCK | O_NOCTTY on Unix, then a type check on the open descriptor. A symlink, FIFO or device put in a log's place is refused with an error that names it, so it can no longer hang unlock, fill memory through /dev/zero, or carry an append or a cut to a file elsewhere. A dangling symlink is no longer taken for a missing log.
  • The signing log's retention rewrite creates its temporary file fresh instead of opening an existing one.
  • SigningAuditLog gains the torn-line guard AuditLog already has. A failed append is cut back to its starting length, or, if that cut also fails, before the next append, retention pass or key rotation. A full disk can no longer leave a partial line that joins the next entry, or send the log to be set aside at rotation.
  • libc is added as a Unix-only dependency of keep-core.

Behavior change: an audit.log or signing_audit.log that is a symlink to a real file now fails unlock until the file is moved back into the vault directory. A symlinked vault directory still works.

Test plan

  • A symlink in either log's place is refused at open, and its target is neither cut nor written
  • A dangling symlink, and a FIFO without blocking, are refused at open
  • A log swapped for a symlink while the vault is open is not read through by any read, nor appended or cut through, including a first append and a deferred cut
  • A symlink at the signing log's temporary name is not written through by retention
  • A failed append to either log leaves no partial line, with and without a failing cut. A deferred cut is made before rotation and retention. Removing either call fails the test.
  • cargo test -p keep-core, cargo fmt, and cargo clippy with the CI feature set and warnings denied

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved the reliability of audit and signing logs when a write or sync is interrupted, helping prevent incomplete entries from affecting later log operations.
    • Log reads and writes now reject symbolic links, pipes, and device files, reducing the risk of operating on unintended files.

Walkthrough

Audit and signing audit logs now check file types during access. Unix opens prevent symlink following and FIFO blocking. Append failures trigger attempts to restore the original file length. Signing logs track failed truncations and apply pending cuts before retention or re-encryption.

Changes

Audit log file safety and append recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Regular-file access checks
keep-core/Cargo.toml, keep-core/src/audit.rs
Audit-log operations use checked opens that reject non-regular files. Unix opens use no-follow and nonblocking flags. Tests cover symlink, dangling-symlink, and FIFO paths.
Audit append recovery
keep-core/src/audit.rs
Audit appends use a shared line writer and attempt to truncate back to the original length after write or sync failures. Tests cover partial writes and truncation failures.
Signing-log pending-cut lifecycle
keep-core/src/audit.rs
Signing logs record a pending cut when truncation fails. They apply pending cuts before appends, retention, or re-encryption, and clear the offset after a successful rewrite.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review aef49

The changes improve audit-file safety, with narrow gaps in dangling-symlink handling and failed-append recovery. These are bounded risks suitable for explicit owner acceptance and follow-up rather than a broad deployment blocker.

Explanation

The title names the two main changes in the PR: audit logs are opened only as regular files, and a torn signing log line is cut. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe these changes in audit.rs and Cargo.toml. The title is 70 characters and 14 words, which is longer than the short single-sentence form preferred, but it stays specific and relevant. No search was needed because the check relies on the provided context.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject file symlinks on Windows before opening audit logs.

On non-Unix targets, open_regular_with does not set a no-follow flag. A file symlink at audit.log or signing_audit.log can be opened through to its target. Reads, appends, and cuts can then act on the target. Add a Windows open flag that opens the reparse point itself so the existing regular-file check rejects the symlink.

🐛 Suggested fix
     #[cfg(unix)]
     opts.custom_flags(libc::O_NOFOLLOW | libc::O_NONBLOCK | libc::O_NOCTTY);
+ // FILE_FLAG_OPEN_REPARSE_POINT: open a symlink itself, not its target.
+ #[cfg(windows)]
+    std::os::windows::fs::OpenOptionsExt::custom_flags(opts, 0x0020_0000);

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 6094b688cac2); the change keeps it reachable.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Cover the backup recovery case and preserve the regular-file refusal contract.

The new regular-file contract also applies when audit.log.bak exists. A dangling audit.log symlink makes self.path.exists() return false, so recover_interrupted_rewrite can rename the backup onto the symlink path before open_regular rejects it. Use present(&self.path) in recover_interrupted_rewrite, then add a test with both the dangling symlink and a regular backup. Assert that opening fails and that the symlink remains. Do not assert that rename writes through the symlink target.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject dangling symlinks during reads.

When an open log is replaced by a dangling symlink, both read_all methods use path.exists(), return an empty list, and allow verify_chain to report a valid empty log. Use present(&self.path) in both guards. This treats dangling symlinks as present and routes them to open_regular, which returns an error. Add regression assertions for read_all and verify_chain after the dangling-symlink swap.

Assert the audit log immediately after the failed append.

The next append cuts any pending partial line before writing. Therefore, the current assertions cannot detect a successful cut that is incorrectly deferred. Add the immediate read for the successful-truncate case, as the signing-log test does.
