Complete the self-hosted Signal service with sealed stores and ACK delivery - #1
Completes the self-hosted Signal service with sealed stores, fenced session ownership and acknowledged delivery. Fixes disconnect, shutdown and refused-generation races. Preserves opted-in own-device app-state key shares when a runner receive reply is lost, including across restart.
Impact
The wire fields and current Rust core pin are unchanged. Key-share replay keeps the existing consent, own-device and retention limits, without retaining application plaintext. SDK/CLI interfaces and Admin controls receive no new authority. This source does not grant test access or deployment.
Verification
Before commit, formatting, strict all-target Clippy, all 29 library tests and all 18 HTTP/WebSocket service-boundary tests passed through MrBoxington's shared Rust cache, with no failed, ignored or filtered cases. New regressions cover atomic fence refusal, encrypted receive replay across restart, consent/provenance rejection, sealed-record tampering, stale writes and original expiry. Markdown links and fences pass. PostgreSQL, container and complete hosted checks, fresh code/security reviews and the accepted-Rust repin remain separate gates.
Session provenance and UI evidence
Continued by the existing source owner. Polymorfa (Softium LLC) attribution and existing upstream notices/license terms are preserved. No UI change.
Rollout and rollback
No package, registry, provider or deployment action. Qualify the final accepted-Rust repin before the dependent delivery is complete. Revert the source change to roll it back.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This pull request adds a Rust Signal node service with configuration and startup, persistent record and lease stores, Polymorfa connectivity, message processing, durable prekey-upload operations, and an authenticated application API with SSE and webhook delivery.

Review this exact private producer head c542316. Focus on customer-side key/plaintext custody, HMAC/SSE acknowledgment before mark_delivered, sealed crash replay, lease expiry/fencing, SQL atomicity and server-only auth boundaries. The protobuf contract and library pin are explicit; dependencies remain unmerged whatsapp-rust PR #5. Real-provider and legal gates are recorded rather than claimed complete.
Review the updated exact head 8aa191e. All five prior findings were verified and addressed with native negative tests. Process-incarnation lease tokens prevent same-node-ID sharing; every reconnect acquires a strictly higher durable generation, matching the coordinated runner rule. Released SQL fences cannot write. Mixed ordinary/protocol content survives without exposing foreign app-state shares or unconsented history. Unknown group addressing modes and unusable app secrets are refused; Debug representations redact application payloads/descriptors.
Rust 1.94 fmt, Clippy with warnings denied, 35 native tests with real PostgreSQL/SQLite, and release build pass locally. GitHub Actions jobs were never started due the account billing/spending-limit gate, so hosted CI remains blocked. No live WhatsApp or legal acceptance is claimed.
A regular code review gets triggered (for example, "@codex review" or when a PR is opened), and you’re opted in so security review runs alongside code review
Once complete, Codex will leave suggestions, or a comment if no findings are found.
- Take no free leases without a live Polymorfa link, so a partitioned
replica cannot block failover or reacquire what disconnect released.
- Scope session events to their originating link; a delayed LoggedOut or
Paused from a replaced link no longer retires or reclaims its successor.
- Abandon leases explicitly on expiry and on a failed renewal near the
deadline: release them, and refuse to serve any reacquired generation at
or below an abandoned one when that release fails.
- Reject a project credential that cannot form an Authorization header at
startup instead of retrying the handshake forever.
- Treat an empty group addressing mode as an invalid runner response.
- Report store failures during sends as 503 storage_unavailable.
The process-incarnation test now runs both processes with live links.

Count only stream subscribers that can receive the event.
listeners counts every SSE subscriber, including clients that filter by a different session_id (src/http.rs Lines 174-180). Suppose the only connected client filters for session A and an event arrives for session B. The NoListener fast path is skipped, and the event is broadcast and then dropped by the filter. Each receive for session B then waits the full ack_timeout before it fails. Every redelivery repeats this, so session B's receive path stays slow until a matching client connects. This causes no data loss, because the receive fails and redelivers. It does add a fixed delay to every message for unwatched sessions.
You could track subscribers per session filter, or treat a filtered-only subscriber set as having no listener for that session.

After a runner-side pause the runner refuses the old generation. Losing the
session without releasing its durable lease reacquired that same generation
and was refused again forever. Release it, as an abandoned lease, so the
next claim carries a higher generation.

Addressed the current CodeRabbit and Codex findings in f3d6a8c. The fix covers SQLite cancellation/failed commit, unconfirmed sends with the original message ID, successful sends after sender-key bookkeeping failure, metadata-only receives, matching SSE listeners, receipt cleanup and checkout credential persistence. Earlier answered Codex findings were verified against current source and closed. Native checks executed 48 passing cases (two PostgreSQL-gated cases await CI), including 16 HTTP/WebSocket cases; strict Clippy and formatting pass. Details and limitations are in docs/review-followup-2026-10-27.md. Staging test access is being prepared in polymorfa/polymorfa#865; team/project and authenticated access are still needed. No production rollout or live session is claimed.

src/node.rs:631-640 Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Serialize shutdown's flag read and session snapshot with in-flight publications.
Node::shutdown sets the flag and snapshots sessions without taking the link lock. A publish_acquired call that read the old flag can insert its session after the snapshot. If link::run then drops connect_and_serve before handler.disconnected(), that session is not released. Its lease remains until the stored expiry, which delays takeover by up to lease_ttl_ms.
A write-lock barrier after the flag send waits for any publication that read the old flag. Later publications observe the flag and abandon their leases.
Suggested fix
pub async fn shutdown(&self) {
// Prevent renewal/reacquisition while releasing sessions. Socket closure
// removes routing claims even if ReleaseSession races the stop signal.
let _ = self.shutdown.send(true);
+ // Wait for publications that read the previous flag value to finish.+ // Later publications observe the flag and abandon their leases.+ drop(self.link.write().expect("link lock"));
let ids: Vec<String> = self.sessions().iter().map(|s| s.id.clone()).collect();
for id in ids {
self.release(&id).await;

Persist the shutdown flag even without watch receivers and wait for any

Correct the shared SSE buffer description and app-state override inventory.
Before commit: shared-cache Rust1.94 formatting and strict all-target Clippy

The Rust core pin and wire contract remain unchanged.
The outside-diff shutdown finding in review 5779420722 is fixed in a53eb8f. Shutdown now persists the flag even without watch receivers and takes the link write-lock barrier before snapshotting sessions, ordering it after any publication that observed the prior flag. The new regression and all 27 library/17 service-boundary cases passed before commit, along with Rust1.94 strict all-target Clippy and formatting.
The earlier README findings in review 5661131765 are also corrected: SSE buffering is shared per session filter, and the supported override list includes SIGNAL_NODE_APP_STATE_SHARE_KEYS. Checks discovered all 13 declared environment overrides and verified the documented list against the implementation. Do not discard an acknowledged delivery when the lease changes.
Delivery::deliver can return success after the webhook or SSE consumer acknowledges the event. If the lease changes before the following session.can_serve() check, this handler returns NotLeaseHolder and skips ops.mark_delivered. The sealed message is then served again, so the consumer can receive the same acknowledged event twice.
Make acknowledgement finalization and receipt persistence one lease-fenced operation. The acknowledgement path must commit the receipt under the receive generation before it reports success. Moving can_serve() before deliver alone does not fix the race because the lease can change while deliver waits.

Security: Authenticate device keys before encrypting
When this service is deployed, a malicious or compromised Polymorfa endpoint can supply its own valid JID/prekey bundle here. The resolver checks syntax and self-consistency, but not an independent account-to-device key binding. The send test demonstrates that the peer owning a supplied bundle can decrypt application-private-text from the resulting stanza. Because that stanza returns to the same endpoint, it can recover first-contact text and media keys. Require independently authenticated device-key bindings or an explicit customer trust decision before encrypting.
Security: Require approval before forgetting identities
When deployed, a malicious or compromised current Polymorfa endpoint can send ForgetIdentity for any valid user JID; the lease check proves only that this is the current runner request. This call immediately erases the user's trusted identity without an application decision or authenticated identity-change artifact. The endpoint can then provide its own valid prekey bundle on the next send and decrypt the returned stanza, defeating the retained-identity control for established contacts. Require customer approval or independently authenticated reset evidence before deleting identity state.
Disposition for the outside-diff acknowledgment finding in this review: the described replay can occur, and it follows the existing at-least-once delivery contract. The published acknowledgment procedure requires durable application deduplication by the stable event ID, then records delivery locally before returning runner success. It explicitly covers failure of the final write. A webhook acknowledgment and the local database commit cannot be one atomic transaction. After lease loss, permitting the old holder to finalize would weaken fencing; discarding the unrecorded receipt would instead risk message loss. The current fail-closed replay behavior is therefore retained. No exactly-once guarantee is claimed, and this disposition does not clear the two separate device-key/identity-reset security findings.
