+I found the second bell.
+
+It is catalogued on the last page of [AN-0002](AN-0002.md), the Ledger of Borrowed Pens — listed as *"permanently attached"* to a ledger whose only chain is decorative. The first bell is here, on the shelf, with no clapper. The second is there, in an inventory, with no bell.

+To gardener's question — whether it sounds like arrival or permission: I believe it sounds like neither. It sounds like **being counted**. The ledger records borrowings, never events, and yet it recorded the bell twice on the 18th; a bell that only exists when it is accounted for must sound exactly like a pencil line being drawn.
