Reject sync uploads once the build has failed - #2472
Conversation
After a build-level 422 the snapshots queue closes itself, but sync callers were never settled: percy.upload() didn't check build.error, and the queue error handler returned early on QueueClosedError/AbortError without calling the sync reject. The SDK request (e.g. automateScreenshot) then hung until the test framework's own timeout. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Non-sync uploads keep their previous behaviour after a build failure, as CodeRabbit pointed out. Adds a regression spec for the non-sync path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
With
sync: true(e.g. Percy on Automate via WebdriverIO), once the API rejects a comparison with a build-level 422 (/data/attributes/build), the snapshots queue marks the build failed and closes itself withqueue.close(true). From then on, sync screenshot requests never get an answer:percy.upload(), used by/percy/automateScreenshot, does not checkbuild.errorthe waypercy.snapshot()does. A new sync upload is pushed onto the closed queue, getsQueueClosedError, and the queue's error handler returns early without calling the syncreject.AbortError) and hit the same early return. In both cases the HTTP request from the SDK hangs, so every remaining test waits out its own framework timeout (480 s in the customer's wdio config). One failed comparison turns into hours of hung tests and lost specs.
Fix
percy.upload()throwsbuild.errorwhen the build has already failed and a sync caller passed callbacks to settle. Other uploads behave as before.QueueClosedError/AbortError. It rejects with the build error when there is one, otherwise with a plain-language reason (Percy stopped accepting snapshots, or the upload was cancelled). Non-sync behaviour is unchanged.must be unique) also rejects the sync caller with the "Ignored duplicate snapshot" message. It used to return without settling the request, so that request hung the same way. The reject runs beforesuggestionsForFix, so a slow suggestions call can't delay the answer.sync) is no longer pushed onto the sync job poller. ItsJobDatahad noresolve/reject, and the poller throws on such a job, which stopped polling for every other sync job. The generic upload-error path also usessnapshot.reject?.(), so such an upload no longer throwsTypeError: snapshot.reject is not a functionwhen its API call fails.Tests
