Why

Part of PER-11104, item 1 (eMudhra CA compromise follow-up). Percy releases ship percy-linux.zip, percy-osx.zip and percy-win.zip with no checksums or signatures, so nothing that downloads them can verify what it runs. That includes BrowserStack's own SDKs (browserstack-binary, browserstack-node-sdk), and SDK-7999 is blocked on having a hash to pin.

What

A new Publish Checksums job in executable.yml:

  • Runs after Build Executables and Sign Win Executable, so the hashes cover the final, signed zips exactly as published.
  • Downloads the three zips from the release, writes SHA256SUMS, and uploads it to the release.
  • Attests all four files with GitHub artifact attestations (Sigstore keyless; no keys to manage). This is the "ideally signed" part of the ticket: each file is tied to this workflow run in percy/cli.
  • actions/attest-build-provenance is pinned to the v4.2.2 commit SHA, per repo convention. Tag values reach shell commands only through env:.

A workflow_dispatch trigger with a tag input runs only this job (build and sign are skipped), to backfill releases that are already published. The first use will be v1.32.12, the release with the eMudhra fix. Backfills publish SHA256SUMS only, with no attestation: that run didn't build the zips, so it must not claim their provenance. Attestations start with the next published release.

Consumer verification

gh release download v1.32.12 -R percy/cli -p 'percy-osx.zip' -p SHA256SUMS
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing
gh attestation verify percy-osx.zip -R percy/cli # releases after this PR

Testing

  • Workflow YAML parses; job conditions verified for both triggers. On release, all three jobs run in order. On dispatch, only checksums runs.
  • The download and checksum steps were dry-run by hand against the real v1.32.12 assets, and the generated SHA256SUMS verifies all three zips.
  • The attestation and upload steps only run in Actions. After merge I'll dispatch for v1.32.12, which is additive (it doesn't touch existing zips), and verify shasum -c. gh attestation verify gets verified on the next published release.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Improvements
    • Release downloads now include a SHA256SUMS file for verifying asset integrity.
    • Release assets from published releases include Sigstore attestations for authenticity verification.
    • Published releases use dedicated build and Windows signing workflows to improve consistency and trust in distributed binaries.
    • Maintainers can manually generate checksum files for existing release assets when needed.

…executables

Percy releases shipped percy-{linux,osx,win}.zip with no checksums or
signatures, so nothing that downloads them (including BrowserStack's own
SDKs) can verify what it runs.

Add a "Publish Checksums" job to the Build Executables workflow. It runs
after the macOS build and the Windows signing job, downloads the published
zips, writes SHA256SUMS, attests all four files with GitHub artifact
attestations (Sigstore keyless; verify with `gh attestation verify`), and
uploads SHA256SUMS to the release. A workflow_dispatch trigger with a tag
input runs only this job, to backfill already-published releases.

📝 Walkthrough

The executable workflow adds manual dispatch with a required release tag. Build and Windows signing jobs run only for published releases. A checksums job generates and uploads SHA256SUMS, and creates Sigstore attestations for release-triggered runs.

Changes: Executable release workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release event job gates
.github/workflows/executable.yml
Manual dispatch requires a release tag. Runs for the same release tag are serialized. Build and Windows signing jobs run only for published release events.
Checksum and attestation publication
.github/workflows/executable.yml
The checksums job waits for release build and signing jobs, or runs directly for manual dispatch. It downloads three release ZIPs, generates SHA256SUMS, uploads it to the selected release, and attests assets only for release-triggered runs. Manual dispatch skips attestation.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 831c2

The workflow adds checksum publication and release-only attestations, with per-tag serialization of release and backfill runs. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains. Attestation and upload steps still need their first real run in GitHub Actions, which is normal validation for a workflow change.

A workflow_dispatch backfill downloads already-published zips it did not
build, so attesting them would record the backfill run as their provenance.
Backfills now publish SHA256SUMS only.

Claude Code PR Review

PR: #2471 • Head: 831c290 • Reviewers: code-review (built-in fallback; no in-scope reviewers in repo)

Summary

Adds a "Publish Checksums" job to the Build Executables workflow. It writes SHA256SUMS for the three release zips and uploads it to the release. On release events it also attests the zips and SHA256SUMS with GitHub artifact attestations. A tag-scoped workflow_dispatch backfill publishes checksums only, and runs per tag are serialized with a concurrency group.

Review Table

Priority Category Check Status Notes
High Security No hardcoded secrets or credentials Pass Uses GITHUB_TOKEN only; the attest action is pinned to the verified v4.2.2 commit SHA.
High Security Authentication/authorization checks present Pass Job-scoped permissions; write access is limited to the checksums job. Backfill runs hold unused OIDC/attestation permissions (Low).
High Security Input validation and sanitization Pass Tag reaches shell only via env:, quoted, with no ${{ }} interpolation in run:. No v-prefix validation (Low).
High Security No IDOR — resource ownership validated N/A —
High Security No SQL injection (parameterized queries) N/A —
High Correctness Logic is correct, handles edge cases Pass Job conditions are correct for both triggers. The backfill-over-attested-SUMS edge case is Medium (below).
High Correctness Error handling is explicit, no swallowed exceptions Pass Steps fail the job on any error.
High Correctness No race conditions or concurrency issues Pass Per-tag concurrency group; at most one pending run per group (Low).
Medium Testing New code has corresponding tests N/A Workflow-only change. The download and checksum steps were dry-run against real v1.32.12 assets; the attest and upload steps are verified on the first dispatch/release.
Medium Testing Error paths and edge cases tested N/A —
Medium Testing Existing tests still pass (no regressions) Pass 51/51 checks green.
Medium Performance No N+1 queries or unbounded data fetching N/A —
Medium Performance Long-running tasks use background jobs N/A —
Medium Quality Follows existing codebase patterns Pass SHA-pinned actions, env-bound inputs, job-level permissions, matching existing workflows.
Medium Quality Changes are focused (single concern) Pass —
Low Quality Meaningful names, no dead code Pass The if on notify is redundant with needs: build.
Low Quality Comments explain why, not what Pass —
Low Quality No unnecessary dependencies added Pass —

Findings

Non-blocking (no Fail rows):

  • File: .github/workflows/executable.yml:150

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Provenance is attested over zips re-downloaded from the release, not the files build/notify produced, so a swap between upload and download would get attested.

  • Suggestion: Attest subject-path in build (osx/linux zips) and notify (signed win zip) on the local files, and have checksums only hash and upload. Note that exploiting this needs contents: write, which also allows editing the workflow.

  • File: .github/workflows/executable.yml:170

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: A workflow_dispatch backfill uploads with --clobber, so it can replace an attested SHA256SUMS from a release run with an unattested one.

  • Suggestion: On dispatch, skip or fail when the release already has SHA256SUMS, and use --clobber only on the release path.

  • File: .github/workflows/executable.yml:149

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Backfill hashes whatever bytes a past release currently holds, with no link back to its original build.

  • Suggestion: Inherent to backfilling. Document that backfilled SHA256SUMS reflect the assets as published at backfill time, and limit backfills to known-good releases.

  • File: .github/workflows/executable.yml:12

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Only one pending run per concurrency group, so a second queued run cancels the first pending one. The group key also uses the raw tag input, so 1.32.12 and v1.32.12 don't serialize.

  • Suggestion: Acceptable for a rarely-used manual backfill; optionally validate inputs.tag against ^v.

  • File: .github/workflows/executable.yml:142

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Backfill runs hold id-token: write and attestations: write they don't use.

  • Suggestion: Split attestation into a release-only job, or move it into build/notify (see the first finding).

  • File: .github/workflows/executable.yml:55

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The redundant if: github.event_name == 'release' on notify.

  • Suggestion: Optional cleanup.

Resolves conflicts with the eMudhra fix (#2468), release checksums (#2471) and the 1.32.12 release:
- .semgrepignore: keep both new ignore blocks.
- client/src/utils.js: keep master's explicit proxy agent and this branch's IPv4-first dns lookup.
- cli-command/src/lockfileDiff.js: snyk-nodejs-lockfile-parser 2.10.4 (#2442) needs Node ^20.19 || ^22.13 || >=24, so a >=20 floor does not always satisfy it; keep the deferred require and say so.
