Why

eMudhra issued 8 intermediate CAs whose private keys can be recovered from the public certificates (incident). Anyone on the network path can mint a certificate for percy.io, BrowserStack APIs or storage.googleapis.com. Browsers and OS trust stores blocked them on Oct 17–20, but Node uses its own bundled roots and has no fix yet:

Bundled root Node 14 (standalone executable) Node 20 Node 24
emSign ECC Root CA - G3 (eMudhra chain) trusted trusted trusted
AAA Certificate Services (Sectigo cross-sign) trusted removed removed

That exposes PERCY_TOKEN/BrowserStack credentials and API responses, and lets an attacker swap the Chromium zip that the CLI downloads, unzips and runs.

What

1. Drop the compromised roots (@percy/client, src/trust.js)
The two roots above are removed from the default CA certificates for every TLS connection in the process (https, proxy agents, fetch). @percy/client/utils does this on import. percy doctor's own prober, which sends PERCY_TOKEN before anything else may load the client, calls it explicitly.

  • Node ≥ 22.19 / 24.5: tls.setDefaultCACertificates(getCACertificates('default') − distrusted).
  • Older Node, including the Node 14 executable: secure contexts without an explicit ca default to the bundled roots plus NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, minus the distrusted roots. Corporate CAs keep working, and an explicit ca is respected.
  • Skipped when Node verifies against the OpenSSL (OS) store, which is already patched: distro builds (Debian/Ubuntu) that default to it, or --use-openssl-ca, following Node's precedence with --use-bundled-ca. --use-system-ca only adds the OS store to the bundled roots, so the roots are still dropped there, and on Node ≥ 22.15 the list starts from tls.getCACertificates('default') so system CAs are kept.
  • Certificates in NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS that cannot be parsed are skipped, as Node does, instead of throwing at import.

2. Verify the Chromium download (@percy/core, install.js)
chromium.checksums pins a SHA-256 per platform for the default revisions. The archive is hashed while it streams and is never extracted on a mismatch; the archive is deleted. This also applies to PERCY_CHROMIUM_BASE_URL mirrors. Checksums were computed from fresh downloads, each matching GCS's own MD5 and size metadata.

Verification

  • Live incident test hosts, run via raw https.get, Percy request() and fetch:
    • Before: Node 14 accepts both hosts; Node 20/24 accept dv-g3b-emudhra.
    • After: all three Node versions reject dv-g3b-emudhra and dv-g3c-aaa-emudhra with UNABLE_TO_GET_ISSUER_CERT_LOCALLY.
    • percy.io, api.browserstack.com and storage.googleapis.com are unaffected.
  • Chromium end-to-end:
    • The real pinned download passes the checksum and extracts.
    • A tampered mirror zip is refused before extraction, and nothing is left on disk.
  • Unit tests:
    • client and core/install specs pass on Node 14; the trust specs also pass on Node 24.
    • Mutation check: removing the dropDistrustedRoots() call fails the import spec.

Follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • Rebuild the executable off Node 14 (executable.yml).
  • Re-verify an already-extracted .local-chromium/<rev> (e.g. a verified-hash marker); today only fresh downloads are checked.
  • Consider scoping the older-Node fallback to client connections (tls.connect) instead of createSecureContext, so embedding processes' TLS servers are untouched.
  • Bumping chromium.revisions now requires updating chromium.checksums; a spec enforces that both lists cover the same platforms.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security

    • Compromised root certificates are excluded from applicable TLS connections.
    • Compatibility is maintained with configured system, bundled, and custom certificate stores.
    • Malformed or unavailable certificate bundles are handled safely.
    • Explicitly configured certificate authorities continue to be honored.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Chromium downloads now support SHA-256 integrity verification for default platform revisions.
    • Downloads with incorrect checksums are rejected and cleaned up.
    • Custom revisions continue to support downloads without checksum verification.

…checksum

eMudhra issued 8 intermediates whose private keys are recoverable from the
public certificates. Browsers and OS trust stores have blocked them, but Node
ships its own roots and still trusts both chains (Node 14, used by the
standalone executable, trusts both; Node 20+ still trusts the emSign one).

- @percy/client: drop "emSign ECC Root CA - G3" and "AAA Certificate Services"
(the Sectigo cross-sign path) from the default CA certificates for every TLS
connection in the process. Uses tls.setDefaultCACertificates where
available, otherwise defaults secure contexts to the remaining bundled roots
plus NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. Skipped when Node uses the OS trust store.
- @percy/core: pin a SHA-256 for each platform's default Chromium revision and
refuse to extract a downloaded archive that does not match.

…stem-ca

- isTrustedCertificate treats certificates that cannot be parsed as untrusted
(as Node does), so a corrupt block in NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS no longer throws
  while importing @percy/client/utils.
- --use-system-ca adds the OS store to Node's bundled roots rather than
replacing them, so only --use-openssl-ca skips dropping the roots.
- trustedCertificates starts from tls.getCACertificates('default') when
available, which keeps system and extra CAs on Node versions that support
  --use-system-ca but not setDefaultCACertificates.

Claude Code PR Review

PR: #2468 • Head: f5c210c • Reviewers: code-review (built-in fallback; no in-scope reviewers in repo)

Summary

Drops the compromised eMudhra roots (emSign ECC Root CA - G3, AAA Certificate Services) from Node's default CA set via @percy/client/utils, and pins per-platform SHA-256 checksums so a tampered Chromium download is never extracted.

Review Table

Priority Category Check Status Notes
High Security No hardcoded secrets or credentials Pass Only public SPKI hashes and archive checksums.
High Security Authentication/authorization checks present N/A No auth logic changed.
High Security Input validation and sanitization Pass Downloaded archive is verified before extraction; unparseable CA PEMs are skipped.
High Security No IDOR — resource ownership validated N/A No resource access.
High Security No SQL injection (parameterized queries) N/A No SQL.
High Correctness Logic is correct, handles edge cases Fail percy doctor sends PERCY_TOKEN before the roots are dropped; distro Node builds that use the OpenSSL store lose OS CAs on the fallback path.
High Correctness Error handling is explicit, no swallowed exceptions Pass The NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS read failure is swallowed on purpose, matching Node, which also ignores an unreadable file.
High Correctness No race conditions or concurrency issues Pass Install is idempotent; the hash is computed on the same stream that is written.
Medium Testing New code has corresponding tests Pass Both branches of trust.js are covered (client coverage is 100%); install checksum match/mismatch/custom revision are tested.
Medium Testing Error paths and edge cases tested Pass Malformed extra CA, missing file, OpenSSL flag spellings, tampered archive.
Medium Testing Existing tests still pass (no regressions) Pass 49 checks green; @percy/core still pending at review time.
Medium Performance No N+1 queries or unbounded data fetching N/A —
Medium Performance Long-running tasks use background jobs N/A —
Medium Quality Follows existing codebase patterns Pass Matches install.js/utils conventions.
Medium Quality Changes are focused (single concern) Pass Two related incident mitigations.
Low Quality Meaningful names, no dead code Pass Minor: getCACertificates('default') is read twice.
Low Quality Comments explain why, not what Pass —
Low Quality No unnecessary dependencies added Pass Node built-ins only.

Findings

  • File: packages/cli-doctor/src/utils/helpers.js:515

  • Severity: High

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: percy doctor runs its auth check, which sends Authorization: Token token=<PERCY_TOKEN> to percy.io, through cli-doctor's own https/tls prober (utils/http.js). Nothing in that path imports @percy/client/utils. The update check, the only other early import, fetches only when its cache is stale. So the doctor's token request can go out while emSign/AAA are still trusted. This contradicts "every CLI network path imports it".

  • Suggestion: Call dropDistrustedRoots() from cli-doctor's utils/http.js, or from the CLI bootstrap so every command gets it before any network I/O.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:44

  • Severity: High

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Distro Node builds compiled with --openssl-use-def-ca-store (Debian/Ubuntu nodejs) use the OS store with no runtime flag. On Node < 22.15, the fallback replaces that store with Node's bundled roots, so a corporate TLS-intercepting proxy CA in the OS store stops being trusted and every Percy request fails. Verified: such builds expose process.config.variables.node_use_openssl_ca, which the code doesn't check. The --use-system-ca case (1) is already handled on Node 22.15+ by getCACertificates('default'); only EOL Node 23.8–23.9 remains.

  • Suggestion: Skip when process.config.variables.node_use_openssl_ca is truthy, as with --use-openssl-ca.

  • File: packages/client/src/utils.js:11

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Importing @percy/client/utils changes process-wide TLS state. That includes host processes that embed @percy/core programmatically, and TLS servers: on the fallback path, servers also get ca set, which matters only with requestCert.

  • Suggestion: Acceptable for an incident mitigation. Consider limiting the fallback to client connections (e.g. inject ca in tls.connect instead of createSecureContext), and document the behaviour.

  • File: packages/core/src/install.js:77

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The checksum is verified only on download. A .local-chromium/<rev> tree that already exists is launched without any check, including one extracted before this fix.

  • Suggestion: Follow-up: record the verified archive hash in a marker file and re-download when it is missing or wrong.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:47

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: --use-openssl-ca and --use-bundled-ca are mutually exclusive and the last one wins; command-line flags override NODE_OPTIONS. The check ignores --use-bundled-ca coming later.

  • Suggestion: Evaluate NODE_OPTIONS then execArgv, and let the last of the two flags decide.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:64

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The fallback re-parses about 140 PEMs for every new TLS context: 5.4 ms against 0.1 ms on Node 14, measured. This is small next to network handshakes, and keep-alive agents reuse connections.

  • Suggestion: Optional: cache the parsed CA set or a shared secure context.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:18

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: On the fallback path, a CA that createPublicKey can't parse but OpenSSL would accept is dropped silently.

  • Suggestion: Log at debug level when an extra CA is skipped.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:39

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: A relative NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS path is resolved against the cwd at import time, while Node resolves it at startup.

  • Suggestion: Rare. Document it, or resolve against the startup cwd.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:54

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: tls.getCACertificates('default') is materialized twice on the new-Node path.

  • Suggestion: Read it once and filter it.

Verdict: FAIL

…builds

- cli-doctor's prober sends PERCY_TOKEN through its own https/tls client
before anything else may import @percy/client/utils, so drop the roots
  there explicitly.
- Skip when Node verifies against the OpenSSL store: distro builds (Debian,
Ubuntu) default to it without a runtime flag, and replacing it with the
bundled roots would drop OS-installed corporate CAs. --use-openssl-ca and
--use-bundled-ca follow Node's precedence (last wins, command line over
  NODE_OPTIONS).
- Read the default CA certificates once, and debug-log skipped certificates.

PR: #2468 • Head: f89979c • Reviewers: code-review (built-in fallback; no in-scope reviewers in repo)

Summary

Drops the compromised eMudhra roots (emSign ECC Root CA - G3, AAA Certificate Services) from Node's default CA set, including in percy doctor's prober. The OS store is left alone on distro and OpenSSL-store Node. Per-platform SHA-256 checksums mean a tampered Chromium download is never extracted. Previous review's High findings (doctor token path, distro OpenSSL-store builds) are fixed.

High Security No IDOR — resource ownership validated N/A —
High Security No SQL injection (parameterized queries) N/A —
High Correctness Logic is correct, handles edge cases Pass Doctor path and OpenSSL-store builds now handled; remaining edge (Node 23.8–23.9 + --use-system-ca, EOL) is Low.
High Correctness Error handling is explicit, no swallowed exceptions Pass Swallowing an unreadable NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS file is intentional and matches Node; skipped certificates are debug-logged.
High Correctness No race conditions or concurrency issues Pass —
Medium Testing New code has corresponding tests Pass client coverage is 100%; flag precedence, distro default and checksum paths are tested; the doctor fix was proven by mutation against live incident hosts.

  • Issue: The pinned checksum is also enforced for PERCY_CHROMIUM_BASE_URL mirrors, so a mirror that re-packages the zip fails hard.

  • Suggestion: This is intended, because mirrors must serve identical bytes and verifying them is the point. PERCY_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE remains the escape hatch. Consider mentioning it in the error message.

  • Issue: The trust specs assume Node's bundled store, so they would fail on distro or OpenSSL-store Node CI images.

  • Suggestion: Pin or stub usesOpenSSLStore in those specs.

Verdict: PASS

Claude Code PR Review

PR: #2468 • Head: d97da5f • Reviewers: code-review (built-in fallback; no in-scope reviewers in repo)

Summary

Drops the compromised eMudhra roots from Node's default CA set, including in percy doctor's prober, and leaves OS-managed stores alone. Pins per-platform Chromium SHA-256s; the reviewer re-downloaded all five pinned archives and every checksum matches. This head makes the trust specs independent of how Node was built, as CodeRabbit asked.

Review Table

Priority Category Check Status Notes
High Security No hardcoded secrets or credentials Pass Public SPKI hashes and archive checksums only.
High Security Authentication/authorization checks present N/A —
High Security Input validation and sanitization Pass Archive verified before extraction; unparseable CAs skipped.
High Security No IDOR — resource ownership validated N/A —
High Security No SQL injection (parameterized queries) N/A —
High Correctness Logic is correct, handles edge cases Pass Fallback confirmed effective for https.get and fetch on Node 20; only EOL Node 23.8–23.9 with --use-system-ca is uncovered (Low).
High Correctness Error handling is explicit, no swallowed exceptions Pass —
High Correctness No race conditions or concurrency issues Pass —
Medium Testing New code has corresponding tests Pass client coverage is 100%; specs pass under both the bundled and the OpenSSL store.
Medium Testing Error paths and edge cases tested Pass —
Medium Testing Existing tests still pass (no regressions) Pass One Windows @percy/sdk-utils job failed in yarn install (npm registry 502), before any test ran; queued for re-run.
Medium Performance No N+1 queries or unbounded data fetching N/A —
Medium Performance Long-running tasks use background jobs N/A —
Medium Quality Follows existing codebase patterns Pass —
Medium Quality Changes are focused (single concern) Pass —
Low Quality Meaningful names, no dead code Pass The doctor's explicit call duplicates the import side effect (kept deliberately, idempotent).
Low Quality Comments explain why, not what Pass —
Low Quality No unnecessary dependencies added Pass —

Findings

Non-blocking (no Fail rows):

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:81

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: On Node < 24.5 the fallback gives every new TLS context about 145 PEMs: about 13.8 ms per context against 0.74 ms with the default store on Node 20.20. Keep-alive agents limit how often this happens, but it adds up across many new sockets.

  • Suggestion: Follow-up: cache a SecureContext for option sets with no other context-shaping fields, or parse the roots once.

  • File: packages/client/src/utils.js:11

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Importing the utils changes process-wide TLS trust, including for host processes that embed @percy/core or @percy/client.

  • Suggestion: Already in the PR follow-ups: scope it to Percy's own agents, or call it from the CLI entry point.

  • File: packages/core/src/install.js:183

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: A PERCY_CHROMIUM_BASE_URL mirror that re-packages the default revision now fails the checksum, with no override.

  • Suggestion: This is intended. PERCY_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE is the workaround; consider naming it in the error message.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:33

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: On EOL Node 23.8–23.9, --use-system-ca combined with the fallback drops the system CAs.

  • Suggestion: Accept, or skip when --use-system-ca is set and getCACertificates is missing.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:49

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: usesOpenSSLStore splits NODE_OPTIONS on whitespace and ignores quoting, and it cannot see store settings that are not flags.

  • Suggestion: Acceptable heuristic; document it.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:81

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The roots are parsed and hashed at import, even for offline commands.

  • Suggestion: Compute the list lazily on first use.

  • File: packages/cli-doctor/src/utils/http.js:9

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The explicit dropDistrustedRoots() call is redundant with the import's side effect.

  • Suggestion: Optional cleanup.

Verdict: PASS

Claude Code PR Review

PR: #2468 • Head: 791345d • Reviewers: code-review (built-in fallback; no in-scope reviewers in repo)

Summary

Drops the compromised eMudhra roots from Node's default CA set (including in percy doctor's prober) while leaving OS-managed stores alone, and pins per-platform Chromium SHA-256s. This head only clears process.execArgv in the bundled-mode trust specs, so they also pass under node --use-openssl-ca. That was the last CodeRabbit thread; all are resolved.

Review Table

Priority Category Check Status Notes
High Security No hardcoded secrets or credentials Pass Public SPKI hashes and archive checksums only.
High Security Authentication/authorization checks present N/A —
High Security Input validation and sanitization Pass Archive verified before extraction.
High Security No IDOR — resource ownership validated N/A —
High Security No SQL injection (parameterized queries) N/A —
High Correctness Logic is correct, handles edge cases Pass The reviewer found nothing that undermines the eMudhra fix or the Chromium verification; remaining edge cases are Medium/Low below.
High Correctness Error handling is explicit, no swallowed exceptions Pass —
High Correctness No race conditions or concurrency issues Pass —
Medium Testing New code has corresponding tests Pass client coverage is 100%; trust specs pass with bundled and OpenSSL stores, including node --use-openssl-ca.

Low Quality Comments explain why, not what Pass —
Low Quality No unnecessary dependencies added Pass —

Findings

Non-blocking (no Fail rows):

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:81

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: On Node < 24.5 the fallback hands about 140 PEMs to every new TLS context: about 13.8 ms against 0.74 ms on Node 20, plus a per-connection store.

  • Suggestion: Follow-up: cache a patched SecureContext per option set.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:17

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: On the setDefaultCACertificates path, a certificate Node already trusts but whose key the JS crypto API cannot export (e.g. GOST or SM2) is filtered out along with the distrusted roots.

  • Suggestion: Follow-up: only remove certificates whose SPKI hash is known-distrusted, and keep unparseable ones on that path (Node already validated them). Rare key types.

  • File: packages/core/src/install.js:183

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: A mirror that re-packages the default revision fails the checksum, with no override.

  • Suggestion: This is intended. PERCY_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE is the workaround; optionally add an override variable for the expected checksum.

  • File: packages/client/src/utils.js:11

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: Importing the utils has a process-global TLS side effect, including on TLS servers on older Node.

  • Suggestion: Already in the PR follow-ups.

  • File: packages/client/src/trust.js:32

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: On EOL Node 23.8–23.9 with --use-system-ca, the fallback drops the system CAs.

  • Suggestion: Accept, or skip in that combination.

  • File: packages/cli-doctor/src/utils/http.js:9

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The explicit call is redundant with the import side effect.

  • Suggestion: Optional cleanup.

  • File: packages/core/test/unit/install.test.js:20

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: code-review

  • Issue: The top-level afterEach runs for every spec in the core process.

  • Suggestion: Move it into the install describe blocks.

Resolves conflicts with the eMudhra fix (#2468), release checksums (#2471) and the 1.32.12 release:
- .semgrepignore: keep both new ignore blocks.
- client/src/utils.js: keep master's explicit proxy agent and this branch's IPv4-first dns lookup.
- cli-command/src/lockfileDiff.js: snyk-nodejs-lockfile-parser 2.10.4 (#2442) needs Node ^20.19 || ^22.13 || >=24, so a >=20 floor does not always satisfy it; keep the deferred require and say so.
