fix(dom): drop comment nodes inside <style> when cloning (PER-11066) - #2464

Conversation
Lit leaves empty marker comments in a <style> that contains a binding. Since #2393 they are cloned and serialized as a literal <!----> inside the CSS, which makes the parser drop the following declaration (display:flex in PER-11066, collapsing a gap layout). What
cloneNodeAndShadowno longer clones Comment nodes whose parent is a<style>.Why (PER-11066)
Since #2393 (
1c1d159d, first released in 1.32.8-beta.0), a<style>is cloned through the generic child walk instead of being rewritten fromtextContent. Lit and other template libraries leave empty marker comments inside a<style>that contains a binding, e.g.html`<style>.grid { ${gridStyle} }</style>`, whose childNodes are#text, #comment, #text, #text, #comment. Those comments are now cloned and serialized as a literal<!---->inside the CSS:On replay, CSS tokenizes
<!--/-->as CDO/CDC, and declaration error recovery dropsdisplay: flex.gapis then inert, so the customer's cards rendered flush against each other in the snapshot while the live page was fine. Before #2393 this was masked: the comment-free
textContentcopy came first in the clone, so the rule applied.Evidence
The same Lit page was serialized and then replayed with JS off in Chrome:
.griddisplayThe customer's build shows the same thing: head (cli 1.32.11) is 2400px tall and base (cli 1.32.7) is 2640px. The difference is 240px, which is 15 gaps × 16px.
Change
packages/dom/src/clone-dom.js: skipCOMMENT_NODEchildren of astyleelement. The check is case-insensitive, so SVG<style>is covered too. A comment node is never part of the stylesheet (the CSS comes only from the text children), so dropping it can't change anything the browser renders.packages/dom/test/serialize-css.test.js: regression test that builds a<style>with comment children around a rule and asserts the serialized text has no<!--and equals the livetextContent.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
Summary by CodeRabbit
<style>elements could be copied into cloned DOMs and interfere with CSS. CSS declarations remain effective, and serialization omits the comment markup while preserving the style element’s text content.
