Refs #341. This covers the last three Components items of phase 2.

Nested values and a property filter

Component values used to be cut at 3 levels and 30 keys, and nothing could ask for the rest. Now they load one level at a time.

On the page

  • serialize has a lazy mode. A nested object, array, Map or Set that hasn't been opened yet shows as { $collapsed: type, size }, and a cut list ends with a $more count.
  • A loop back to an object that is already open shows as [Circular].
  • readComponentValue reads a value by path: keys, array indexes, or Map and Set entries.
    • It reads own data properties only, so getters never run.
    • It refuses secret names, methods, injected services, outputs and Angular internals.
    • For an instance that no longer exists, it says the instance may have been destroyed.
  • The levels the panel opened (up to 40) are read again on each push, so they follow the app.

RPCs

  • The panel uses request-component-value and the page answers with component-value-result, on the same request and answer pattern as request-component-edit.
  • Both are read-only and listed in RPC_INSPECTOR.

In the panel

  • Objects, arrays, Maps and Sets have a disclosure toggle labelled with their type and size, a "Show N more" button, and loading and error rows.
  • A property filter matches property names and nested keys that are already loaded, and opens the levels that lead to a match. It shows an "N of M" count, a no-match state with Clear filter, and Escape clears it.

Editing (from #382) still works

  • Whole-value edits read the full value first.
  • A new editInside field adds an Edit to each plain value inside an object, using paths such as user.name or items.0.title.

Agents

  • inspect-component takes path, depth and limit to read one nested value.
  • Breaking change for agents: values in detail now stop at the first level. The resource and tool descriptions say how to read deeper levels.

Hydration

  • Status per tree node: hydrated, skipped, mismatched or client. Angular 22 doesn't publish a hydration util on ng, so the status is read from __ngDebugHydrationInfo__, the field its dev mode writes on each node. If a future ng.ɵgetHydrationInfo or ng.ɵreadHydrationInfo appears, it is used first.
  • Summary: a hydration section with counts, mismatches (with redacted expected and actual text) and dehydrated @defer blocks.
  • Pages that weren't server-rendered get a "not rendered on the server" state.
  • Page overlay: outlines the regions in its own aria-hidden shadow-root host with no pointer events.
    • It never writes to the app's own DOM, and a test watches the app's DOM with a MutationObserver to check this.
    • Each status has its own line style and a text label, plus a legend, so status isn't shown by color alone.
    • It draws at most 300 regions. When it is off, there is no element and no listener.
  • New hydration agent tool: gives the summary and lists, and takes an overlay argument. It is in the action tier, and read-only mode keeps the tool but drops overlay. request-hydration-overlay is in RPC_INSPECTOR.

Directive-only hosts and <tag> [dir] search

  • Elements that host directives but no component show as <a> [routerLink] rows.
    • Their ids are stable, from the existing element-id map.
    • At most 1000 are listed.
    • A remembered Directive hosts toggle hides them.
    • Selecting one shows its directives and a button to show the component that owns it.
  • The tree search accepts <tag> (exact match) and [dir] (a selector attribute or class name) along with plain text. A token still being typed matches as a prefix.
    • The panel and list-components use the same parser.
    • list-components also takes directiveHosts: false and marks directive hosts and hydration status in its outline.

Combining the two parts

The two parts were built in separate worktrees and combined with git merge-file. Six files conflicted:

  • component-tree.ts: the options type.
  • overlay.ts: the collect call.
  • devframe.ts: the resource description and the inspect-component branch.
  • config.ts: RPC_INSPECTOR.
  • The panel imports.
  • One docs table.

Every conflict kept both sides, and all the checks below ran on the combined code.

Tests

Package tests

  • component-values.test.ts (17 tests) and component-value-tools.test.ts (7 tests).
  • hydration-real.test.ts server-renders a real app, hydrates it in jsdom, and checks the hydrated and skipped statuses and a real directive host.
  • component-tree-hosts.test.ts (12 tests), tree-query.test.ts, hydration-overlay.test.ts and hydration-agent.test.ts (9 tests).

Panel tests

  • component-value-tree.test.ts (9 tests) and component-tree-hydration.test.ts (11 tests).

Checks

Check Result
pnpm format:check Pass
pnpm typecheck Pass
pnpm docs:build Pass
pnpm skills:check Pass
pnpm test:devtools 2390 passed
pnpm test:panel 562 passed
pnpm extension:build Done, in its own commit

Docs

  • inspectors/components.md: new Nested values, Filter values, Directive hosts, Search syntax and Hydration sections.
  • agents/tools.md: the new hydration tool and the inspect-component and list-components arguments.
  • agents/resources.md: notes on first-level values.

Known limits

  • Mismatches are tested with a fake ng only, because Angular throws during bootstrap when it finds a real one.
  • Directives on <ng-container> and <ng-template> are not listed.
  • A real key named $collapsed or $more would be misread by the panel. The existing $type marker has the same issue.
  • Neither part was checked in a real browser with axe yet. I'm running that now and will report back before merging.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Component inspection now supports searching and exploring nested values, loading more entries, and editing supported nested values.
    • The component tree can show directive-only hosts, selector details, and hydration status, with controls to inspect hydration mismatches and highlight affected regions.
    • Search supports text, host tags, and directive selectors. Inspection tools can read nested values and report hydration details, including dehydrated regions.
  • Documentation
    • Updated inspector and tool guides with search, nested-value, directive-host, and hydration capabilities.

…st directive hosts

Values load one level at a time with Show more and a property filter, and inspect-component reads a nested value by path. The tree shows hydration status per node with a page overlay and a new hydration agent tool, lists elements that host directives but no component, and accepts <tag> [dir] search. Refs #341

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4088f

Deeper inspection preserves several existing controls, but the injected-service exclusion applies only to the first property. A nested reference can therefore expose service state beyond the previous inspection limits. The potential disclosure is confined to connected inspected applications; broader compromise has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new deep-read contract does not preserve the root injected-service exclusion during nested traversal. A caller with component-inspection access can follow a non-secret-named container reference into an injected service and request its data. Nested steps also accept non-enumerable own data properties. Some enumerable nested-service data was already visible through the base serializer, but the new paths extend reach beyond those previous limits. Actual sensitive application data exposure is conditional on the inspected object graph and has not been demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified disclosure path requires access to component inspection and a suitable reference in a connected application's component graph. Repeated requests can inspect multiple matching components and pages available through that connection. The evidence does not establish unauthenticated reachability, direct database access, credential acquisition, or infrastructure privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A component-inspection caller controls the requested path. After an allowed root container, nested traversal can reach a service reference without repeating the root service-identity check, and serialization can return its non-redacted state to the panel or agent. The new traversal expands an existing shallow exposure rather than demonstrating a new external trust-boundary compromise.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both new RPC names are mapped to the components inspector. inspect-component retains read classification, while write tools remain separately classified. Reads reject secret-named path steps, direct injected-service properties, root outputs and Angular internals; serialization applies name and text redaction. These controls narrow exposure but do not recursively exclude service objects.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Nested edits independently resolve the live component and validate paths, secret names, outputs, unsafe keys, replacement JSON, and current values before mutation. Signal edits construct a replacement before set; property edits perform one final assignment. Cached inspection data is therefore not the sole authorization decision. Application-defined setter side effects are outside the demonstrated atomicity guarantee.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a consistent recursive visibility policy for path traversal and serialization. If injected-service identity is an inspection boundary, enforce it wherever those objects are reached, including through aliases and containers. Explicitly decide whether non-enumerable properties belong in the public inspection contract.

…name toggles by their text

A whole-value edit now refuses clipped text, truncation markers and Map, Set or class values. Focus stays in the list after Show more and moves to the owner row after Show owner, value toggles are named by their visible text, the filter count says rows when directive hosts are listed, and the resources page documents the new tree fields.
