feat(notification): generate event contracts from TypeSpec - #5303
gergely-kurucz-konghq wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
First step of the Notification vNext contract foundations: Event payload and Rule configuration types are defined once in TypeSpec, next to the owning domain, and generate a models-only Go package per domain plus canonical JSON Schemas. - The @openmeter/typespec-notification-events library adds @gopackage (TypeSpec namespace -> Go package) and @eventtype (canonical v<version>.<name> Event type, optional Rule configuration model), and an emitter that writes per-package Go files and a manifest. - Released contracts are immutable, so contract roots carry their version: friendly names end in V<version>Payload / V<version>RuleConfig, and JSON Schema ids are <event type>.payload / <event type>.rule_config. The library rejects contracts that break these rules. - scripts/generate-notification-events.mjs compiles an events-only OpenAPI document per package (committed under api/notificationevents) and copies the generated Go files and JSON Schemas into the package. - Each package regenerates through go generate: a generated directive runs oapi-codegen with one shared configuration, producing the payload and Rule configuration structs. eventtypes.gen.go carries the Event type value and the embedded JSON Schemas (draft 2020-12). - openmeter/notification/eventtype is a leaf package with the EventType identity (name and version), so domain contract packages do not depend on Notification. - Two representative contracts: v1.entitlement.balance_threshold.triggered (with Rule configuration) in openmeter/entitlement/notificationevents and v1.billing.invoice.created (system Event) in openmeter/billing/notificationevents. Tests marshal the generated structs and validate them against the generated schemas. The Event Registry and the vNext API are left to follow-up changes.

Compile contracts through the TypeSpec tester to assert every validation diagnostic and the emitted go:generate directive, Event type declarations and manifest. Run the tests in make test-api-spec. Skip the Rule configuration name check when the payload name lacks its version suffix: the expected name derives from the payload name, so the second diagnostic would name a wrong expectation.

JSON Schema consumers read the schemas through an io.Reader or decode them as JSON, both of which take bytes, so embedding them as []byte avoids a string-to-bytes conversion at every use.

Overview
What
First step of Notification vNext (design doc §8, step 1, first bullet): Notification Event contracts are defined once in TypeSpec and generated into Go structs and JSON Schemas, owned by the producing domain.
Two contracts are modeled to prove the flow end to end:
v1.entitlement.balance_threshold.triggered: a rule-produced event with a payload and a Rule configuration.v1.billing.invoice.created: a system event with a payload only.Each producing domain gets a models-only
notificationeventspackage:openmeter/entitlement/notificationeventsopenmeter/billing/notificationeventsEach package contains:
eventtype.EventTypevalue per contract;[]byte.A new leaf package,
openmeter/notification/eventtype, definesEventType{Name, Version}, the canonicalv<version>.<name>form and its validation. No runtime behavior changes. Nothing consumes the new packages yet.
Why
The vNext design needs one source of truth for event contracts, so that Go business logic, published JSON Schemas and, later, the API cannot drift apart. Generating them from TypeSpec avoids hand-written mapping layers between those representations.
The contracts live in the producing domains because those domains own their events. The Notification domain only routes and delivers them.
Scoping this PR to contract generation keeps it reviewable. The Event Registry and the vNext API build on these packages in follow-up PRs.
How
The pipeline runs as part of
make update-openapi. No new tool is needed: it reuses TypeSpec's own emitters and the repository's existing oapi-codegen setup.TypeSpec. Payloads live in each domain's folder of the AIP spec:
src/entitlements/notification-events/src/billing/notification-events/They are declared in a
<Domain>.NotificationEventsnamespace and can reuseSharedtypes.src/notification-events.tspmaps each namespace to its Go package with@@goPackage.Decorator library. The new private package
api/spec/packages/typespec-notification-eventsprovides two decorators:@goPackage(path)maps a namespace to the Go package generated from it;@eventType("v1.<name>", RuleConfig?)marks a payload as an event contract. The library validates contract naming at compile time:
V<version>PayloadorV<version>RuleConfig;@jsonSchema;@idequals<event type>.payloador<event type>.rule_config.Emitters.

scripts/generate-notification-events.mjscompiles one events-only OpenAPI document per domain intoapi/notificationevents/<domain>/. It then copies the generated Go files and schemas into the Go packages, naming each schema after its$id.Go.
go generateruns oapi-codegen with the shared models-only config,api/spec/packages/aip/oapi-codegen.notification-events.yaml, like every other generation target.Naming conventions:
