No 4XX, 5XX or specific error codes in these classes are documented throughout the description.

This is terrible because most clients need to know which errors they might get, what information it may contain to help recover, and what to do with it.

Plus there are already error types in the description that are easy to use.

Thanks for reporting this. We’ve published expanded HTTP error-response documentation, including operation-specific status codes, error schemas, and applicable retry headers.

The delivered specification is available in public OpenAPI revision c17afe02.

Matching API-reference updates have merged in Python #3965, TypeScript #2810, Go (openai/openai-go#979), Ruby #765, Java #1089, and CLI #287. These updates preserve existing client APIs and error handling; no user code changes are required. Java’s final candidate also passed all 236 downstream compatibility tests.
