What Notch is

Notch is a desktop screen recording and video editing app for macOS 11+ and Windows 10+. It covers the whole path from capture to a finished video: record the screen, mic, system audio and camera, then trim, zoom, annotate, caption and export — without moving the footage into a separate editor and without uploading anything anywhere.

It is built for people who make software tutorials, course lessons, product demos, DevRel content, and localized video — where the recording has to look deliberate, not like a raw capture.

What it does

Record & zoom

  • Capture a screen or a single window with mic, system audio and camera in one setup.
  • Auto-zoom that follows the action — Notch detects where you pause and zooms in automatically, with smooth transitions and zero keyframing.
  • Cursor, click and keystroke highlights so every interaction is visible on screen.
  • Audio-only and camera-only recording for voice-overs and talking-head clips.

Record in parts, export as one

  • Multi-take recording: shoot a lesson section by section instead of restarting a 10-minute take because of one stumble.
  • Reorder parts, drop the ones you don't need, cut mistakes out of any clip, add transitions between parts, and export a single video.

Style & polish

  • 50+ gradients, mesh backgrounds and custom wallpapers, plus shadow, blur, rounded corners and padding.
  • Style presets — save a visual setup once and apply it to every future recording in one click, so a whole course stays on brand.
  • Annotations: text, arrows, shapes and blur zones, with enter/exit animations and precise timing on the timeline.
  • Webcam overlay you control — 9 positions, custom size, mirror toggle, shown or hidden anywhere on the timeline.

Captions & localization

  • Add caption tracks in multiple languages and ship a localized version per audience.
  • Export burned-in subtitles or a standalone SRT file for YouTube, Vimeo or your LMS.

Edit & export

  • Trim dead time, cut mistakes with blur, darken or hard-cut transitions, and change speed from 0.25x to 2x.
  • Export MP4 up to 4K (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1) or a compact GIF — handy for docs, pull requests and Slack.
