What a user gets

Before: restoring a snapshot taken while a seat was stopped starts that seat fresh, even when its newest restore policy is resume_if_possible and earlier session history contains a resume token. Nothing says that the prior conversation was skipped.

After: that seat reports awaiting-decision before a session starts. Other seats restore as usual. Apply and the restore forecasts share the same decision: rig up --existing --plan, the public plan routes, rig status, restore-check guidance and preserved-shell advice.

The message recommends a deliberate per-seat fresh start: rig seat launch '<logical-seat>@<rig>' --fresh --reason "<why>". It uses the current rig name and shell-quotes the selector. The same command works when the whole rig is stopped or siblings are running; another rig's same-named logical seat does not make the reference ambiguous. The recorded token is explicitly unverified and may be stale or belong to another runtime. The message does not promise that the earlier conversation can be resumed.

The absent-seat history check precedes the live restoring continuity shortcut, so that shortcut cannot report a held seat as fresh without starting it. Occupant ambiguity still fails first.

Existing fresh controls remain: no recorded earlier token, a newest-row policy other than resume_if_possible, or an explicit fresh request.

The new stop: who it protects, and what it costs

This extends the existing FR-7 pre-launch decision rule to an absent occupant with recorded resume history. Without the stop, restoring that snapshot replaces the conversation and rolling transcript with a fresh session without warning. The cost is one deliberate fresh-start command for each held seat when fresh is what the person wants. It does not guess which earlier conversation to resume or attempt to resume an unverified token.

This changes one existing recovery rule rather than introducing a new command or restore mode.

How you verified it

Current tip: 07de793995e3ef9855de9208ac27354e403de791.

  • 276 focused product tests pass across restore contracts, preserved-shell forecasts, orchestrator, plan preview and preconditions. Builder lint, final daemon typecheck and diff check pass.
  • Independent review cleared this exact candidate. Its six boundary probes reproduce the restoring-continuity mismatch on the exact parent and pass on this tip: eligible absent-seat history awaits a decision before the restoring shortcut; explicit fresh, missing-token, non-resume and resolved-occupant controls keep their existing shortcut; occupant ambiguity still fails first. The probes check preview parity, zero terminal effects and unchanged session/continuity rows.
  • Earlier guidance checks at 55914772 cover duplicate logical ids, literal shell quoting and live rig-name apply/preview parity with a stale snapshot name. Those checks remain attributed to that candidate. The later JSDoc commits and their test results are recorded separately; their results are not relabeled as current-tip checks.
  • The whole-stopped/live-sibling message cases fail on the earlier published head. The intermediate logical-only recommendation reproduces seat_ambiguous when another rig reuses the logical id; the qualified reference resolves the intended seat.

All ten latest-head CI checks pass on this candidate. CodeRabbit completed review without actionable findings, reports no concrete merge-blocking risk, and reports 100% docstring coverage (threshold 80%).

Anything you were unsure about

The newest session row determines the restore policy; a recorded token from an earlier row is history, not proof of usable continuity. A newer non-resume policy still allows a fresh start.

The checks use real HTTP/lifecycle/SQLite with mocked provider and terminal effects. No full local workspace suite, live-provider fresh journey or reboot/restore run is claimed for this tip. The scenario harness cannot express the required stopped-seat snapshot setup; the contract tests exercise those consumers directly. rig launch --plan is unchanged and still does not show a per-seat resume-or-fresh decision.

If this is security-related

Not security-related.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump or changelog edit
  • Tests added or updated where the change is testable
  • Checks and their limits are attributed to the tested candidate

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Restoring a seat with saved session-resume information now pauses for a decision instead of unexpectedly starting a fresh session.
    • Restore previews, status, and recovery guidance now consistently report when a seat needs a decision and provide an appropriate next step.
  • New Features

    • You can explicitly choose a fresh launch for a held seat. Fresh launches also remain available when there is no saved resume information or the restore policy calls for a fresh start.

…ume token

FR-7 stops a restore for a decision when a resume_if_possible seat had a
session but no usable token, so that only a seat with no prior session, a
non-resume policy or an explicit --fresh starts fresh. A seat with no
occupant at capture (it was stopped, so the snapshot recorded it absent)
slipped past that rule: absent resolves to no session, and the seat was
fresh-primed even when an earlier occupant had left a resume token. Its
conversation was replaced without a word.

Such a seat now stops for the same decision (awaiting-decision, no session
started, re-run with --fresh <seat> to start it fresh). It still starts
fresh as before when no earlier row carries a token or that occupant's
policy is not to resume. Which earlier conversation to resume is not the
restore's to guess, so it does not resume one.

…reviewed

Review of 3c0f2cb3: apply stopped the seat for a decision, but the launch
plan, POST /api/up plan, rig status and restore-check still promised a fresh
launch for it.

- The rule now lives in active-occupant.ts (absentSeatResumeHistory and its
one wording), used by both restore and the plan preview, so the forecast
and apply cannot drift. Rig status reads the preview, so it follows.
- restore-check's resume-path check no longer promises "Session will be
created fresh on restore" for a seat with nothing to attach; whether
restore resumes, starts fresh or asks is per seat, so it points at
  `rig up <rig> --existing --plan`.

The contract test from the review covers apply, every forecast, the fresh
controls, subset restore and crash-cart.

Review of cef000ca:

- The decision is now: no occupant at capture, the seat's newest row (by
ULID) is under resume_if_possible, and some row for it carries a usable
resume token. An older resume token behind a newer relaunch_fresh row no
longer stops the seat; the newer row is the seat's current intent.
- restore-check's preview command shell-quotes the rig name, as the
  service's recovery commands already do.
- Drop a trailing blank line at the end of restore-orchestrator.ts.

…s launch advice

mvschwarz#1070's advice for an idle preserved shell says what launching from the
pinned snapshot would do. For a snapshot taken while the seat was stopped
it still said "start a fresh conversation" when an earlier occupant had
left a resume token, while that launch now stops for a decision. The
forecast now applies the restore's own absent-history rule, so the advice
and the launch agree.

Restore planning and apply now consider eligible resume history when a snapshot records no active occupant. Such seats can require an explicit fresh-launch decision. Restore-check guidance and tests cover the resulting outcomes.

Thanks, @haralez, for another careful PR, after #1053 and #1060. As you describe it, restoring from a snapshot taken while a seat was stopped starts a fresh conversation for that seat, even when an earlier one is on record, and nothing says so. Thanks too for listing the forecasts that would change and the cases that still start fresh.

We're reviewing it, and we'll follow up here.

@mvschwarz

Thanks again, @haralez. We'd like to take this. When a restore meets a seat that was stopped at the snapshot, is set to resume_if_possible, and has an earlier conversation's resume token on record, it waits for a decision instead of starting fresh, while the rig's other seats restore as usual. Today that seat starts fresh, and starting fresh also replaces its rolling terminal transcript, so the earlier scrollback is lost.

One change to the stop's message, please:

  • When the rig's other seats are already running, the fresh-start command it names is refused there (rig up --existing --fresh exits with rig_not_stopped). For that case, please name rig seat launch <seat> --fresh --reason "<why>".
  • Keep any resume guidance to routes that exist, without promising the earlier conversation can be resumed. A token on record doesn't mean the conversation still works: it can be stale or from a different runtime, and nothing checks it. Restoring from an older snapshot taken while the seat was running hands that token to the resume step, and that's as far as we've seen it go.

Please add or adjust a test for the message in both cases: the whole rig stopped, and other seats already running. After your push, we'll review the change.

@coderabbitai The docstring coverage warning on 55914772 is addressed in 837f1218 with JSDoc for the per-seat restore executor and the read-only plan preview builder. This is an eight-line comment-only change. Daemon typecheck and diff check pass; both files emit identical JavaScript with comments removed. Guidance behavior verification remains attributed to 55914772 until the fresh reruns on this tip complete. Please recheck docstring coverage on the new head.

@haralez I checked head 837f1218. The commit adds only eight JSDoc lines:

  • RestoreOrchestrator.restoreNodeWithCompensation now documents continuity checks and compensation.
  • buildRestorePlanPreview now documents the read-only per-seat forecast.

With the same 11-function scope, these additions should raise coverage from 72.73% to 90.91%, above the 80% threshold. The displayed automated result still reports 72.73%; I will request a review to refresh that check.

This check does not verify restore behavior. Guidance behavior verification remains attributed to 55914772 until the new-head test results are available.

@coderabbitai Docstring coverage now passes at 100.00% on 0e376d6f (11 functions, threshold 80%). The added JSDoc describes the restore executor, read-only preview/check guidance, and isolated test fixtures. All subsequent changes from the independently cleared guidance are comments only; emitted JavaScript with comments removed is identical. Fresh checks on this tip pass: 272 product tests plus five review-control probes, lint and diff check. The warning is handled; there is no inline thread associated with this coverage check.

@haralez Thanks for the update. The reported 100.00% docstring coverage on 0e376d6f exceeds the 80% threshold and addresses the warning.

You also report that all 272 product tests, five review-control probes, lint, and diff checks pass. I have not independently rerun these checks. No inline thread needs resolution.

Pushed 0e376d6f. The shared apply/preview message now recommends a deliberate per-seat fresh launch using a rig-qualified logical reference, for example rig seat launch 'dev.worker@example-rig' --fresh --reason "<why>". That command applies whether the whole rig is stopped or other seats are running, and avoids ambiguity when another rig has the same logical seat name.

The message says the recorded token is unverified and may be stale or belong to another runtime. It no longer suggests manually restoring the earlier conversation. The restore decision and launch behavior are unchanged.

Fresh checks at this tip pass: 272 focused product tests, five review-control probes, lint and diff check. The probes cover the emitted fresh command with duplicate logical ids, shell quoting, and apply/preview parity when the live rig name differs from the snapshot, with and without a sibling. Independent review cleared the guidance at 55914772; the subsequent changes only add JSDoc, and emitted JavaScript with comments removed is unchanged. The focused tests and probes were rerun on the current tip.

All ten CI checks pass on this tip, including CodeRabbit, whose docstring coverage check reports 100.00% (threshold 80%).

The HTTP/lifecycle checks use mocked provider and terminal effects. No full local workspace run or live-provider fresh journey is claimed for this tip.

@coderabbitai The restoring-continuity risk in the summary is fixed in 07de7939. The absent-seat history decision now runs before the restoring shortcut, after occupant ambiguity detection. A stopped seat with eligible history reports awaiting-decision, matching its preview, without starting a session.

Independent checks reproduce the result mismatch on the exact parent and pass all six boundary probes on this candidate. Explicit fresh requests, missing tokens, non-resume policies and resolved occupants retain the existing restoring shortcut; ambiguous occupants still fail first. The checks verify zero terminal effects and unchanged session/continuity rows. The 276 focused product tests and daemon typecheck pass; builder lint and diff check also pass. Terminal/provider effects are mocked, and no broad or live-provider run is claimed for this tip. Latest-head CI is running.

@haralez Thanks for the update and the ordering clarification. You report that 07de7939 places the absent-seat history decision after occupant ambiguity detection and before the restoring shortcut. This addresses the reported apply/preview mismatch.

The earlier learning describes the old ordering and no longer matches this change.

You report that six boundary probes, 276 focused product tests, daemon typecheck, builder lint, and diff check pass. I have not independently rerun these checks. Latest-head CI is still running. The mocked checks do not establish live-provider behavior.

Timestamp: 2026-10-12T02:59:48.058Z
Learning: In packages/daemon/src/domain/restore-orchestrator.ts, commit 07de7939 changes RestoreOrchestrator.restoreNodeWithCompensation so the absent-seat resume-history decision runs after occupant ambiguity detection but before the continuity_state.status === "restoring" shortcut. A stopped seat with eligible resume history reports awaiting-decision without starting a session, matching its preview. Explicit fresh requests, missing tokens, non-resume policies, and resolved occupants retain the restoring shortcut; ambiguous occupants fail first. This supersedes the earlier learning that the restoring shortcut must precede all per-seat resume decisions.

Thanks, @haralez, for both updates. The message now names one per-seat fresh command that works whether the whole rig is stopped or other seats are running, the rig-qualified reference keeps duplicate seat names apart, and the recorded token is called unverified. 07de7939's reorder also makes apply and preview agree for an absent seat with recorded history.

Both reviews are done at 07de7939. A final maintainer check remains before merge, and we'll update here.

Approved at 07de793. Restoring a snapshot taken while a seat was stopped no longer starts that seat fresh without a word when its restore policy is resume_if_possible and earlier history holds a resume token: the seat reports awaiting-decision before any session starts, other seats restore as usual, and the apply path and every restore forecast agree. The message recommends a deliberate per-seat fresh start with the exact command and says the recorded token is unverified. Required CI passed at this head, on current main for its files.
