Summary

AI coding tools have become a normal part of development and are used by both new contributors and experienced maintainers. This change is not intended to ban or discourage their use.

It only asks contributors to disclose meaningful AI assistance, for example:

Assisted-by: Claude Code
Assisted-by: ChatGPT

The human contributor remains responsible for reviewing, understanding, and testing everything they submit.

Other open-source projects use a similar approach: AI assistance is allowed, but the contributor remains accountable and the use of AI may need to be disclosed.

Changes

  • add a shared policy for AI-assisted contributions
  • require meaningful AI assistance to be mentioned
  • document the Assisted-by: commit trailer
  • add short references from the relevant contribution and review guides

This keeps AI use accepted and transparent without treating it as misconduct.

Define disclosure, attribution, review, testing, security, and contributor
responsibility requirements for contributions created with generative AI
tools.

Assisted-by: ChatGPT (GPT-5.5 Thinking)
