I'm okay with most of these changes, but I'd prefer to keep the extension permission-free (maybe using something like localStorage instead).

Thanks for the feedback, I made a new commit.
The localStorage is actually nicer since you can inspect it. I just somehow assumed it didn't work in an extention.
Also, the "send" button can now be used when the message box has been resized into the log area :)
