Summary
Third batch of fixes for 7.0.1, on the open addressing tables,
OLhashTableandODhashTable. It closes a defect found while working on the hash tables batch (an insertion that threw could leave the table with an entry that nobody inserted) and two older ones, found by checking the rule that such a table always keeps an empty bucket: it is full withcapacity() - 1keys, so that a search that misses has a bucket to stop at.insert,search_or_insert,contains_or_insertandoperator[]marked the bucket as busy before they copied the key into it. When the copy threw (astd::stringwithout memory, for instance), the bucket stayed busy with whatever it held: a key by default, or a key that had been removed, which so came back.size()went up by one and the requested key was not there.with_resize = falsetookcapacity()keys; thenODhashTablefailed an assertion on the next insertion, andoperator[]with a new key dereferenced a null pointer, in both tables and inMapOLhashandMapODhash.0 < lower < upper < 1),remove_ptr()removed the key and thenresize()threwstd::overflow_error.rehash()orresize()that threw while placing the keys lost some of them (found by the review). With keys whose swap can throw, such as a class with copy operations only, a failure halfway left the table with the keys placed so far, and the old buckets leaked.Behaviour changes
insert,search_or_insert,contains_or_insertandoperator[]leave the table as it was when they throw. If the key cannot be stored, the reservation of its bucket is undone; if the table cannot grow afterwards, the key is taken out again. An empty bucket is left empty: marked as removed it would not lose keys, but searches would go on past it, and enough failed insertions could leave a table far from full without empty buckets. A removed key's bucket stays marked while a probe sequence goes through it; inOLhashTablea mark that none needs is cleared, andODhashTablegets back its probe counters exactly.resize()andrehash()leave the table as it was when they throw. Keys whose swap may throw are copied into the new buckets instead of swapped, and a failure gives the table back its buckets.noexceptswap, such asstd::string, are swapped as before.capacity() - 1keys, one fewer than before. Theninsert,search_or_insertandcontains_or_insertreturnnullptrfor a new key, as their documentation says, and still find the keys that are there.operator[]throwsstd::overflow_errorfor a new key, also inMapOLhashandMapODhash.remove_ptr()shrinks the table only if the keys fit in half the capacity under the upper threshold, with an empty bucket left. With the default thresholds it shrinks as before. Not changed
remove_ptr()still throws after it has removed the key. The table keeps its other keys.OLhashTablefar from full without empty buckets; searches that miss then go through the whole table untilrehash(). Changing that is for 7.1.0.Performance
Measured in instructions executed, since timings on the test machine vary by 10 % between runs of the same binary. Insertion by copy, by move and through
search_or_insert, withlongand withstd::stringkeys, in both tables, with GCC 14 and Clang 22 at-O2: between −1.8 % and +0.3 % against the previous code, over 24 configurations. The code that every insertion runs is as short as before: growing the table is a function apart, and keys whose copy cannot throw get notryblock.Testing
Tests/hash-it.cc. Against the code of fix(hash): Keep hash tables consistent through copy, move and swap #111, 23 of them fail, two with a segmentation fault and three on an assertion; the other four check that shrinking works as before where it already worked.ODhashTable, growth that fails, empty buckets that failed insertions must not use up, removed marks that no probe sequence needs, and 20 000 mixed operations checked against astd::set. Except for the mixed operations, these tests compare the state of every bucket after the failed insertions with the one it had before.rehash()andresize()that fail while placing copy-only keys, with each copy failing in turn. Without the fix LeakSanitizer also reports the old buckets.operator[], in both tables and inMapOLhashandMapODhash.capacity() - 1keys.operator new[].🤖 Generated with Claude Code
