Xreader UI bug when opening epubs files #182

Closed

Description

@versus666
Xreader 1.4.4
Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya Cinnamon 3.4.6 fully updated kernel 4.13.0-16-generic x86_64

Issue
Xreader struggle with Epub files.

Not working :
When opening an Epub file only the 1st page is displayed and the UI buttons are disabled. No middle button scrolling (cursor not even changing), no zoom in/out, no 'expand to fit', no 'page view' selectable, just like if no document was loaded. The thumbnails bar show nothing (completely blank). When choosing in the side panel 'index' then going back to 'thumbnails' the placeholders ( shadow+page number) are shown but empty. Scroll (wheel or with the slider) and the thumbnails placeholders other than those previously shown are not present (not blank but invisible).

Partially working :
The Up/down keys work but only to scroll on the current page, does NOT trigger the previous or next page even in continuous mode. Same with mousewheel scroll.

Working :
The menus work ok, in particular the 'go' menu with previous/next/first/last page and the weird related hotkeys. The index bar is show and working when clicking on the items. Entering the page number manually works.
After going fullscreen with F11 the UI button 'leave fullscreen mode' is show and working.

Steps to reproduce
Try the above.

Expected behaviour
Working fine like with any PDF files.

Other information
Does that with EVERY Epubs I have.
No error message even when launched from the CLI.

    @tkxak

    I have problems with epubs too. I was using Mint 18.2 and decided to do a fresh installation with 18.3. I was able to read epubs nicely with xreader in 18.2 and I can not anymore. xreader opens the file but just display the chapters at the side bar and nothing else, just a blank page where should be the text. I do not know if is related to our problem though.

    @pjsanfil

    I see an issue in the latest build of master in Ubuntu with the following error at the command line:

    (xreader:13678): XreaderView-WARNING **: Error loading data from file:///tmp/xreader-13678/The%20Linux%20Programming%20Interface.epubJZMUBZ/OEBPS/cover.html: Frame load interrupted

    Even the first page is not visible, all pages are blank. A latest build worked only a few days ago on some documents but pulling the latest in broke for all epubs I've tested so far.

    I can reproduce what @pjsanfil said on Ubuntu 18.04 and Arch [GNU/]Linux. Both systems are x86_64. On Ubuntu, I'm using whatever the latest supported kernel version is (4.15.0-something, I'm not at that computer right now), and on Arch, I'm using 4.17.6-1.

    On Ubuntu, I got xreader (and a few other xapps) from Embrosyn's Launchpad PPA. On Arch, I used the version in the default repositories.

    BTW, Atril is also suffering from the same bug (blank pages, "Frame load interrupted" error in the terminal) on both systems.

    Unfortunately, issue still exists as from default package (Linux Mint 21 @ 5.15.0-48-generic) as from the latest master.mint21:
    ** (xreader:23296): WARNING **: 15:55:47.350: Error loading data from file:///tmp/xreader-23296/Network%20Programming%20with%20Rust%20by%20Abhishek%20Chanda%20(z-lib.org).epubELMOW1/titlepage.xhtml: Frame load interrupted

    EPUB support was removed from Xreader and reimplemented in Xepub: https://github.com/xapp-project/xepub.
