Retire DeepWiki across the fleet #237

Open

Description

@cpitzi

DeepWiki (Cognition's AI-generated wiki over public repos) has been part of every Lentago repo's front door since the 2026-07 brand-header round. It is not earning its place: the fleet's own docs are written to be read directly, and the grounded Ask surface the practice actually stands behind is mitchella's. Chris's call, 2026-10-07: ditch it entirely.

Decisions (2026-10-07)

  • Whole sweep: every surface below, in one .github PR plus one PR per repo.
  • The 17 deepwiki.com repo homepages in fleet-ops/repos.json are cleared, not replaced.
  • asclepias Lab 00 "Ask the fleet" is deleted outright (it is built on DeepWiki); every link to it goes with it, and the labs stay numbered from 01.
  • The retirement is recorded as fleet ADR-0010.
  • Historical records keep their mentions: the ADRs that cite DeepWiki as context at the time (asclepias 0001/0002/0005, .github 0008), the generated fleet reports, theoria's README snapshots, and the archived repos.

Where it lives

Surface What
badge row Ask DeepWiki badge emitted by brand/generate.py into every README header block (20 READMEs, 27 generated blocks)
README section ## 📚 Ask this codebase (DeepWiki) with the big badge and good-first-questions (~15 READMEs)
README footer the canonical footer in docs/voice.md ends "…read this repo on DeepWiki" — propagated fleet-wide, incl. lupinus's six story pages
org profile big badge + blurb, "DeepWiki ↗" sublink on 8 product rows, a note under the table, and a numbered step
repo settings homepage for 17 repos in fleet-ops/repos.json (Terraform-enforced)
asclepias Lab 00; onboarding/day-one.md step 4; glossary + pattern-catalog rows; CLAUDE.md; README
lupinus CLAUDE.md; six story footers
solidago .mcp.json registers the DeepWiki MCP server
org GitHub App devin-ai-integration, installed org-wide 2026-07-04 with contents/workflows/members permissions — uninstall in the org settings UI (no API)
local deepwiki MCP server in ~/.claude.json

Sweep landed 2026-10-07: #238 merged and applied (all 17 deepwiki.com homepages cleared — no lentago repo homepage points at DeepWiki now), and the 20 per-repo PRs listed in the checklist all merged through auto-merge. Verified against main in each repo: no DeepWiki mention remains outside docs/adr/ and the generated fleet reports; asclepias labs/00-ask-the-fleet.md and solidago .mcp.json are gone.

    Two notes from the sweep:

What remains is the one UI-only item: uninstalling the devin-ai-integration org app.

Cleanup note (2026-10-07, ~03:10Z). A parallel session dispatched 20 duplicate per-repo issues/jobs three minutes after the hand sweep above had already merged. All 20 duplicate issues are closed; 7 jobs were pulled before pickup, 13 ran against already-clean repos. The epic body was briefly overwritten and has been restored from edit history.

Two of those runs found something real: the README header blocks of monarda and osmunda had drifted from brand/generated/ (old tagline in the alt text, older badge set). Re-scoped as monarda#15 → monarda#16 and osmunda#10 → osmunda#11; arming on CodeRabbit. A fleet-wide check against GitHub main finds no other drift (.github and shared-workflows carry an intentional extra OpenSSF Scorecard badge) and no remaining deepwiki mention in any README or in solidago's .mcp.json.

Two things noticed along the way, not acted on: coderabbit is not a registered bullpen project (its job failed with unknown project), and coderabbit plus the six uvularia-* satellites carry no brand header block at all.
