What and why

The review of the pull requests stacked under #984 left seventeen actionable points, sixteen distinct defects, across #968 to #989. I checked each one against the top of the stack, feat/compute-and-engines, before touching it: every one was still there and none had been fixed by a pull request above its own, so this pull request fixes all of them, on top of the stack. Where a point named a class of defect, I swept the tree for the class and added a guard that fails on it, and I watched each new test or guard fail on the defect before the fix.

The fixes, by the pull request they belong to

#968: the API table's examples run, and a gate binds every one. The static_airflow_resistance row still passed thickness_m by position after it became keyword-only, so the example raised TypeError. It was not alone: binding every call in the table's usage column to its signature found thirteen more rows that had gone the same way (air_attenuation, atmospheric_attenuation, atmospheric_absorption, outdoor_propagation_attenuation, roughness_to_frequency, swept_sine_distortion, ship_source_spectrum, impedance_adjustment, bin_amplitude_modulation, noise_signal, standing_wave_reflection, standing_wave_normalized_impedance and band_limited_weighting_factor, which took an argument it never had). All fourteen now pass their keywords by name, with the results they print checked. scripts/check_api_reference.py gains example_problems: every call in a usage cell that starts from something the library publishes is bound with inspect.Signature.bind, without running it. A method shown on its class takes its instance for granted, a call that elides its arguments (f(x, ...)) is held only to what it writes while a call nested in it is held to all of its own, and a name that no longer exists is reported too. The gate printed the fourteen rows before the fix and passes after it.

#969: the swept-sine guide links the thd function by its name. The rename of the result attribute to thd_ratio had caught the link text to the steady-tone function, electroacoustics.thd, in the English and Spanish pages and the docs/ mirror. The link reads thd / harmonic_analysis again, and the llms files follow.

#970: the barrier reflection records hold their bands. ReflectionIndexUncertainty had no checks, so a hand-built record with one U_j for eighteen bands drew eighteen bars at that value, and a negative or NaN U_j, an unknown column or a coverage factor of -1 all built. It now refuses a missing array, a shape other than the eighteen bands of EN 1793-5, a negative or non-finite U_j or U, a column that is not one of Table A.1 and a coverage factor that is not positive. The two sibling records with the same gap, ReflectionIndexResult and ReflectionFrequencyLimit, now check each field's rank strictly, so single numbers are refused too, that their arrays agree about the bands, the grid positions and the microphones, and that they hold the eighteen bands and nine microphones of the standard; the result also requires its rating.

#973: the module gate reads where an import resolves. import pkg.leaf as leaf and from ..pkg import leaf, both of which bind the submodule itself, were reported as hiding it, so a correct __init__ would have failed the gate. The relative source is now resolved against the package before it is compared, and an import that climbs past the top-level package is read as reaching nothing.

#974: the prose around a count says the noun again. The rename of counts to n_<plural> had rewritten the nouns around them: "measurements in n_planes n_planes", "The number of n_planes", "Biquad n_sections" and "Number of n_axles per vehicle". They read planes, sections and axles again, and a test in tests/test_public_vocabulary.py reads every docstring and guide, code and mathematics left out, for an n_ name written where its sentence wants the noun. It found exactly those five and nothing else.

#975: the unit and spelling gates read what a published class inherits. check_parameter_units.py read each published class's own namespace, so a property, or a method's parameters, inherited from a base no module exports was never checked by the decibel rule, the unit rule or the spelling rule. One walk of the method resolution order now serves the methods, the properties, the members and the public names, each named by the class that defines it, so a member shared by many classes is reported once. The tree was already clean under the wider walk; two tests plant a property and a method on _DrawableLayer and see them reported.

#977: a renderer's keyword no longer collides with the caller's. TonalSurveyAssessment.plot(zorder=2) raised TypeError: got multiple values for keyword argument 'zorder', because the renderer wrote zorder=3 beside **kwargs. The same shape was in 117 calls across 29 modules: beside **kwargs itself, beside a mapping built from it (**{"label": ..., **kwargs}, **styled(kwargs, ...), options = dict(kwargs)), and in the helpers a renderer hands the caller's keywords to. Each style keyword now merges under the caller's with styled(kwargs, ...) (or the dict literal it already used), which also lets the caller use either spelling of an aliased property. The few keywords a renderer computes from the data, the baseline of a bar measured from a floor or stacked on the paths below it, the error bars of a mean, the bins of a histogram and the extent of a field, are refused by name with TypeError through a new refuse_fixed_keywords helper, the way plot_emission_pressure already refused its own. scripts/check_plot_style_defaults.py refuses the shape: a keyword written beside anything that carries the caller's keywords, unless it names a parameter of a function with **kwargs, the function takes it out first or refuses it, or the call goes to one of the package's own helpers. test_every_plot_forwards_kwargs_to_primary_artist now passes zorder to every plot it covers: 42 of them failed on the base of the stack. The figures are unchanged: I regenerated all of them after the first batch and every one matches the committed one within tolerance, except two that differ the same way when drawn from the base of the stack on this machine, and CI's figure job compares them again.

#978: a record's required columns refuse None, and a one-band spectrogram is drawn between its own edges. OctaveBandSpectrum built with None in frequencies or values and failed later in .plot(); it now raises TypeError naming the field, and tests/test_required_fields.py covers both. OctaveSpectrogramResult carried no band width, so a single band was drawn one octave tall: a third-octave band measured from 891 Hz to 1.12 kHz was painted from 707 Hz to 1.41 kHz. The record now carries the bank's lower_edges and upper_edges, refuses None, and holds them to the level grid and to what the plot draws: positive, each band enclosing its centre, contiguous and equally wide on a logarithmic axis. The plot spans the first lower edge to the last upper edge, and so does the by-hand version in the levels guide. The figure that draws a spectrogram renders byte for byte as before. The guides, the API table and the CHANGELOG entry name the two new fields.

#979: a source names its cell by a whole number held as an int. Since _integer accepts a whole float, GaussianPulse(ix=2.0, ...) passed add_source and failed the first step with numpy's IndexError, and so did CWSource, SignalSource, PlaneWaveSource(offset=1.0), ExplosionSource and ForceSource. Each record now holds its indices as the ints they name when it is built, and a half cell is refused there with ValueError. NumPy's numbers do not move (the frozen parity test passes), and I ran the CuPy proof again on the RTX 4060 with driver 610.57.04: every field and phasor is bit-identical, and only the engine fingerprint in gpu-parity.lock moved.

#980: each comment sits on the argument it describes. Removing the leading frequency argument and appending frequencies= had left every trailing comment one argument too high in seven examples: sequential_comparison, amplifier_frequency_response, room_to_room_transmission, adjustment_value, sound_calibrator_correction, electrostatic_actuator_correction and diffuse_field_sensitivity. Each comment is back on its argument, with its column realigned, in the English and Spanish pages and the docs/ mirrors, and the llms files follow.

#981: a conformance verdict refuses a text or an array before reading it as a number. float() ran before the guards, so ("1", 2.0) was accepted as a lower limit of 1, an array member failed inside numpy with no name, ConformanceVerification(lower_limit="1", ...) was accepted, and verify_conformance parsed a text deviation or uncertainty the same way. The record now asks each of its five numbers its rank before anything converts it (the two limit checks used to run after the conversion, where they could never fire), verify_conformance hands the numbers to the record as given instead of through float(), a member of a limit pair is checked before it is read, and the :raises TypeError: lines say what is refused.

#982: the contributor guide test holds every rule to its shape. The ruff check read select and never ignore, so a rule enforced by ruff D205 would have passed although D205 is ignored. It now reads ignore and extend-ignore and settles the clash by specificity, as ruff does. read_page now also fails a rule without exactly one Why, one Do and one Don't, and a Do or Don't label followed by text instead of its fenced example. The 238 rules of the guide pass unchanged, and the index says what the test now holds.

#983: the hearing groups type check in a loop. hearing_groups() returned tuple[str, ...] and ExposureCriteria.group was a str, while the lookups take a HearingGroup, so looping over the groups into weighting_parameters or exposure_criteria was a type error although every value was right. The tables, the function and the record field are typed as the codes, and tests/static_typing/test_hearing_group_codes.py holds the loop and the round trip; mypy refused it before the fix.

#989: a clip worker no longer keeps the figures of every wavefront clip it drew. The hue map of the wavefront arcs held every arc strongly, and an arc keeps its axes and figure alive, so a worker that rendered several clips kept every closed figure of the four wavefront clips for the rest of the batch. The map is now a WeakKeyDictionary, and a test sees a closed figure and its arcs collected. This moved the fingerprints of anim_flanking_paths, anim_intensity_scan_power, anim_power_two_rooms and anim_sweep_deconvolution, so I drew every frame of the four clips in all four variants before and after the change, 960 frames in all, and their SVG digests are identical. I restamped the four fingerprints without rendering or publishing anything.

Validation

No new computation. Every fix is a refusal, a type, a merge of keywords, a lifetime or a text, and each behavioural one has a test that failed on the defect first.

  • ruff check and format over the tree, mypy over src, scripts, stub/src and tests/static_typing, and bandit over src: clean.
  • Every scripts/check_*.py that reads the source or the documentation passes, and the documentation snippets pass (7774 blocks over 743 pages).
  • The API reference, the llms files, the site reports, the PyPI readme and docs/CONFORMANCE.md regenerate without a diff.
  • All figures regenerated and compared, and check_animation_freshness.py passes on the 43 published clips.
  • gpu-parity.lock re-measured on the GPU; the lock, frozen parity and published-number tests pass (79 tests).
  • The full suite, pytest -q -n 8 tests: 29788 passed, 57 skipped.
  • The site type-checks, builds and passes html-validate.

Checklist

Ran locally, same as CI:

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates shared plot keyword handling, spectrogram band-edge data, input validation, repository checkers, type annotations, figure cleanup, and documentation. It adds regression coverage for the changed behaviors.

Changes: Plot style handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Renderer style merging
src/phonometry/_plot/*
Plotting calls use styled(...) to merge caller options with renderer defaults. Selected renderers reject overrides for computed plot keywords.
Style validation
scripts/check_plot_style_defaults.py, tests/test_check_plot_style_defaults.py, tests/test_result_plots.py
The checker detects caller-reachable keyword collisions. Tests cover collision detection, rejected overrides, and caller z-order forwarding.

Spectrogram band edges

Layer / File(s) Summary
Band-edge result contract and rendering
src/phonometry/filters/core.py, src/phonometry/_plot/filters.py, tests/filters/test_spectrogram.py
OctaveSpectrogramResult requires validated lower and upper band edges. The filter bank supplies these edges, and the plot uses them for raster bounds.
Spectrogram documentation
docs/*, site/*, llms-full.txt, CHANGELOG.md
Examples and reference text describe the edge fields and use them to set plotted row boundaries.

Record and input validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Barrier-reflection and scalar validation
src/phonometry/environment/propagation/barrier_reflection.py, src/phonometry/metrology/conformance.py, tests/environment/propagation/test_barrier_reflection.py, tests/metrology/test_conformance.py
Barrier-reflection records validate fields, dimensions, and values. Conformance inputs reject text and arrays before numeric conversion.
Required spectrum fields
src/phonometry/building/measurement/floor_covering_improvement.py, tests/test_required_fields.py
OctaveBandSpectrum checks that frequencies and values are present.
FDTD source indices
src/phonometry/simulation/fdtd.py, src/phonometry/simulation/elastic_fdtd.py, tests/simulation/*
Source constructors normalize whole-number indices and reject invalid indices during construction.

Repository checks and types

Layer / File(s) Summary
API and parameter checks
scripts/check_api_reference.py, scripts/check_parameter_units.py, tests/test_check_api_reference.py, tests/test_check_parameter_units.py
The API checker validates documented calls against signatures. The parameter checker discovers inherited package-defined members.
Guide and prose checks
tests/test_contributing_guide.py, tests/test_public_vocabulary.py, docs/contributing/index.md
Guide validation checks required sections, example fences, and Ruff selectors. Prose validation checks count identifiers used as nouns.
Hearing-group annotations
src/phonometry/underwater/bioacoustics/weighting.py, tests/static_typing/test_hearing_group_codes.py, site/src/content/docs/reference/api/underwater/weighting.md
Weighting tables and public annotations use HearingGroup and Guidance types.

Other code and documentation updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wavefront lifetime
scripts/figures/schematics.py, tests/test_figure_wavefronts.py
Wavefront hue storage uses weak keys. A regression test checks object reclamation after figure closure.
Example, API, and generated-document updates
docs/*, site/*, llms-full.txt
Examples, links, comments, and parameter descriptions were updated. Animation fingerprints were also refreshed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 76d09

The new style check can miss a plot renderer that copies caller keywords through an annotated assignment, which only affects repository tooling. A documentation example for one-band spectrograms may also still need confirming against the new edge fields. Both are low-impact and can be fixed before or shortly after merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4e553

The principal design impact is stricter construction contracts and newly required spectrogram band edges. The inspected paths preserve validation before simulation state changes and do not execute documentation examples. Downstream caller compatibility and deployment exposure are not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected changed paths affect library callers and repository-checking or rendering processes. They do not establish a remotely reachable service or a new privilege transition. Tenant, environment, and hosted-service exposure cannot be determined from these paths alone.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Documentation text remains data rather than executable call input. Target traversal uses live Python attributes and signature introspection, so it is not a sandbox for hostile library implementations; however, roots are published library objects, and broad public-module importing already existed before this PR.
  • observed — Coordinate normalization does not replace grid authorization checks. Acoustic and elastic engines validate bounds and obstacles before appending sources, and acoustic functional setup validates sources before engine creation. The changed path does not allow rejected coordinates to reach simulation-array injection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Simulation stepping remains an in-place transition without general rollback if a caller-supplied waveform raises after updates begin. That callback and partial-step behavior predates this PR; index normalization does not introduce or expand it. Registration failures still occur before the rejected source is appended.

Numerical conformance

All 1893 conformance checks pass, across 111 domains and 523 standards

1893/1893 checks pass across 111 domains and 523 standards (227 normative designations, 125 further published sources).

Used in the tables below is how much of that clause's published tolerance the deviation consumes: 100 % sits exactly on the limit, 5 % uses a twentieth of the allowance, and a dash means the clause states no two-sided tolerance for the quantity, so there is no budget to spend. It is reported and never used to decide a verdict, which is settled at full precision before any rounding.

Use the stored band edges in the manual plot.

The one-band division-by-zero is pre-existing because this example is unchanged from the PR base. However, this PR adds lower_edges and upper_edges and changes the plot contract to use them. Update the example and its explanatory comment to use the published edge fields. Regenerate the Spanish and llms mirrors.

Update the manual plot example and its explanatory comment to use the published
result.lower_edges and result.upper_edges fields for raster bounds and axis
limits instead of deriving bounds from result.frequencies and half_band; retain
result.times for the time coordinates. Apply the same documentation change to
the Spanish and llms mirrors.

Review comments at @scripts/check_plot_style_defaults.py:
- Around line 244-245: Update the keyword-collision analysis around the ast.Name
check to track mappings copied or derived from caller kwargs, so expansions such
as **options are recognized as caller-supplied keywords. Preserve the no-finding
result when the derived mapping is used without an explicit collision, while
reporting a finding when the caller also supplies the same keyword explicitly,
such as zorder.

Review comments at @src/phonometry/_plot/environment.py:
- Around line 2957-2958: Keep the histogram bar geometry derived from the
original edges by preventing caller-provided styled values from overriding width
and align. Update the style-handling logic around the histogram construction and
the width=np.diff(edges), align="edge" arguments so these two keywords are
rejected or excluded from the caller-overridable mapping, while preserving the
counts-to-edges correspondence.

Review comments at @src/phonometry/_plot/geometry/simulation.py:
- Line 165: Update the obstacle overlay call using styled so caller-provided
extent and origin cannot override the simulation-derived coordinate values;
reject or remove those geometry keywords while continuing to merge other visual
style kwargs. Preserve the existing extent, origin, and interpolation values
used by the simulation preview.

Review comments at @src/phonometry/_plot/headphones.py:
- Line 403: In the bar plotting logic, reject caller-supplied bottom styling and
keep the calculated floor baseline fixed; update the handling around the bottom
argument so bars continue using heights derived from levels minus floor and end
at their measured levels. Locate the change via the existing floor and styled
symbols.

Review comments at @src/phonometry/_plot/wind_turbine_receptor.py:
- Line 565: Update the plotting logic around styled and yerr so callers cannot
override the calculated errors with yerr=0; keep error bars derived from
result.mean_levels and combined_uncertainty_db. If a data override is required,
expose it under a separate explicitly named parameter rather than treating yerr
as a style option.

Review comments at
@src/phonometry/environment/propagation/barrier_reflection.py:
- Around line 1289-1291: Update the require_finite_fields call in the
uncertainty validation to include frequencies alongside expanded_uncertainty and
rating_expanded_uncertainty_db, while preserving the existing shape validation.
- Around line 1651-1657: Update the ReflectionFrequencyLimit validation around
require_same_length to require exactly nine entries for each per-microphone
field, while preserving the existing equal-length validation across
window_length_s, low_frequency_limit_hz, and limiting_component.
- Line 1194: Update the validation around require_same_length to enforce the
fixed measurement dimensions of eighteen bands and nine microphones, in addition
to preserving the existing checks that corresponding fields have equal lengths.
Ensure shortened-but-consistent inputs are rejected rather than accepted as a
standard layout.
- Line 1184: Update ReflectionIndexResult.__post_init__ to include
lowest_band_hz and rating in the require_present validation alongside
frequencies, reflection_index, and position_values, so replaced results cannot
retain missing required fields.

Review comments at @tests/test_contributing_guide.py:
- Around line 283-284: Update the ignore-checking logic in _ruff_problem to
combine Ruff’s ignore and extend-ignore lists before applying specificity, so
codes disabled through extend-ignore are treated as ignored enforcers.

Review comments at @tests/test_public_vocabulary.py:
- Around line 1898-1900: Update the scanner around the fenced-state handling to
distinguish opening delimiters from blocks closed on the same line, so
single-line math such as $$x$$ does not leave fenced true or skip subsequent
prose. Preserve multiline fence behavior, and add a scanner test covering a
same-line math block followed by searchable text.
- Line 1923: Scope the generated-page exclusion in the vocabulary test to the
site API root, using a dedicated _GENERATED_API_ROOT path and checking
path.parents rather than matching the generic “reference/api” substring. This
must continue excluding generated site pages while allowing the hand-maintained
docs/reference/api/index.md to be checked.

CodeRabbit's outside-diff point on the levels guide is fixed in de9e23e: the by-hand spectrogram in the English and Spanish pages and the docs/ mirror now reads result.lower_edges and result.upper_edges for the raster bounds and the axis limits, so a single band no longer divides by zero, and the llms files are regenerated.
