Owner

Ships the canonical label set and the classifier that labels newly-filed issues.

Additive only — never removes a label, never overrides a human's classification, silent when unsure, never fails an issue.

Also adds this repo's two new workflows to .github/workflows/actions.lock as []. That lock is keyed by workflow path and refuses any workflow it does not list — a startup_failure, which produces no check run and is therefore silent. gh actions-lock cannot add these: it records action versions, and both workflows deliberately use none.

See docs/LABELS.adoc in hyperpolymath/.git-private-farm.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added automatic labelling for newly opened and reopened issues based on titles, tags and recognised keywords.
    • Added support for manually triggering issue classification.
    • Added a standardised label set covering type, area, priority, status, metadata and scope.
    • Added automated synchronisation of repository labels, including descriptions, colours and tiering.
  • Improvements
    • Existing labels are preserved, while only relevant and confidently detected labels are added.
    • Label updates run automatically after configuration changes and on a monthly schedule.

Walkthrough

Adds a generated label taxonomy, a jq issue classifier, and two GitHub Actions workflows. The workflows synchronise repository labels and apply additive labels to newly opened or reopened issues.

Changes

Label automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Label taxonomy
.github/labels.json, .github/label-classifier.json
Defines 36 labels across six tiers. Adds title-prefix, bracket-tag, keyword, signal, precedence, tier-limit, valid-type, and frozen-label configuration.
Issue classification engine
.github/scripts/classify-issue.jq
Parses title prefixes and bracket tags, matches keywords and signals, applies precedence and tier limits, preserves existing labels, and outputs canonical labels.
Label workflow automation
.github/workflows/labels.yml, .github/workflows/label-triage.yml
Synchronises labels from the generated configuration and classifies issues on opening, reopening, or manual dispatch. Both workflows tolerate missing data and API failures without failing the run.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b31c5

The PR adds automatic issue labeling and label synchronization. It is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up for two bounded risks: overlapping synchronization runs may report a failed label creation despite correct state, and a transient failure reading existing labels may allow a competing classification label to be added.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not classify when the existing-label read fails.

Line 83 converts a failed gh issue view request into an empty label set. If the issue already has enhancement and its title matches fix:, the workflow can add bug after a transient read failure. Exit successfully without edits when this read fails.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Serialise label-synchronisation runs.

If two runs list labels before either creates a missing label, one gh label create call can fail because the other run created it first. If it is the only mutation, Lines 101-103 fail the second run although the label state is correct. Add a workflow concurrency group and set cancel-in-progress: false.
