Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

127-127: Add the separate leading-BOM check required by Issue #70.

The \x{feff} member does not detect a UTF-8 BOM at byte offset 0 in this grep -P scan. A file beginning with EF BB BF can therefore pass as clean. Check the first three bytes separately, then merge and de-duplicate those paths with /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail

file="$(mktemp)"
results="$(mktemp)"
errors="$(mktemp)"
trap 'rm -f "$file" "$results" "$errors"' EXIT

printf '\357\273\277clean\n' > "$file"

PATTERNS='(*UTF)[\x00-\x08\x0B\x0C\x0E-\x1F\x{a0}\x{ad}\x{200b}-\x{200f}\x{202a}-\x{202f}\x{2060}\x{2066}-\x{2069}\x{feff}]'

set +e
grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" "$file" >"$results" 2>"$errors"
rc=$?
set -e

[ "$rc" -le 1 ] || { cat "$errors"; exit "$rc"; }
grep -Fqx "$file" "$results"

138-138: Propagate scan errors instead of recording them only.

The command still suppresses grep errors and stores EL_EXIT without checking it. An execution error can leave the results file empty, after which the summary reports a clean scan. Preserve the no-match status separately from execution errors and fail the step on scan errors.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Improved automated quality checks to detect a broader range of hidden and control characters.
    • Enhanced scan reliability when checking files containing binary or non-standard text content.

Walkthrough

The invisible-character scan now uses Unicode code-point escapes, detects additional C0 control characters and null bytes, and scans binary files as text.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update detection pattern and scan mode
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The PATTERNS regex now uses Unicode code-point escapes and includes additional C0 control characters. The grep command now uses -a to scan binary files as text.

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b25f4

The CI gate now detects several invisible characters, but it can still miss a leading UTF-8 BOM and may report a clean scan when the underlying scan fails. This can allow invalid workflow or source files through CI, so the PR needs follow-up before it is merge-ready.

Poem

A rabbit checks each hidden sign
New code points now align
Control marks no longer hide
Binary files are searched inside
The gate sees what slips from sight
And hops away beneath moonlight

Resolution

Implement the separate leading-BOM check, update stdlib/ByteDetector.affine and config.ncl, and apply the corrected pattern to all affected inline copies required by issue #70. Add or provide verification for clean files, legitimate whitespace, corrupted workflows, and all listed invisible-character cases.

Fix the grep -P pattern

GNU grep rejects the \x{...} escapes with character code point value in \x{} or \o{} is too large. Because the step suppresses this error, it records zero findings and reports success. Use a GNU grep-compatible pattern and fail the step when the scan returns an error.
