Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved detection of invisible and control characters during automated checks.
    • Added coverage for additional hidden Unicode characters, including word joiners.
    • Ensured binary files are also checked during scanning.

Walkthrough

The workflow’s invisible-character scan now uses Unicode code-point escapes, detects selected C0 controls and U+2060, and scans binary files as text with grep -a.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update invisible-character detection
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The PATTERNS regex now matches Unicode code points, including selected C0 controls and U+2060. The grep command uses -a to scan binary files as text.

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5e5ee

The workflow’s invisible-character scan may silently miss violations on runners using the C locale because its Unicode pattern can be rejected, allowing malformed files through. Merge should wait for explicit UTF-8 locale handling or owner acceptance of this bounded correctness risk.

Poem

A rabbit checks each hidden mark,
And scans the files from light to dark.
Code points hop in neat array,
While binary shadows lose their sway.
The gate now spots what stayed away.

Explanation

The PR implements the correction in one workflow file, including codepoint escapes, C0 control detection, and grep -a. Issue #70 also requires the correction across the other inlined dogfood-gate.yml copies and alignment with the compiled linter and configuration, which this changeset does not include.

Resolution

Apply the correction to all affected inlined dogfood-gate.yml copies. Update the compiled linter and config to include the same C0 control range. Add or preserve the separate leading-BOM check required by issue #70, then verify that all implementations remain consistent.

Pull Request Overview

While this PR successfully addresses the logic issue where the invisible-character gate previously failed to match any content, the current implementation introduces a significant reliability risk. Specifically, using Perl-compatible Unicode escapes (\x{...}) in conjunction with the -a (text) flag can cause grep to fail or skip multi-byte sequences depending on the environment and locale.

Additionally, the command execution is currently inefficient and suppresses errors that could hide regex failures. There is also a lack of automated test fixtures to verify that the updated patterns correctly identify the targeted characters and that the NUL byte handling works as expected.

About this PR

  • No automated test files or regression samples (e.g., a 'fixtures' directory with hidden characters) were included in the PR to verify that the updated regex correctly identifies the targeted characters in a CI run.

Test suggestions

  • Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of Non-breaking space (U+00A0)
  • Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of C0 control character (e.g. Backspace \x08)
  • Missing recommended test scenario: Grep successfully scanning a file containing a NUL byte (\x00) instead of skipping it
Prompt proposal for missing tests
Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of Non-breaking space (U+00A0)
2. Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of C0 control character (e.g. Backspace \x08)
3. Missing recommended test scenario: Grep successfully scanning a file containing a NUL byte (\x00) instead of skipping it

🔴 HIGH RISK

The Unicode codepoint syntax will cause grep to error or fail to match UTF-8 sequences in byte mode. Use hex byte sequences for robustness.

🟡 MEDIUM RISK

Suggestion: Performance and reliability can be improved by batching files with +, removing the redundant -r flag, and removing the 2>/dev/null redirection to ensure regex engine errors are visible in the logs.

-exec grep -aPl "$PATTERNS" {} + > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt

Set an explicit UTF-8 locale for the scan.

If the runner uses the C locale, GNU grep rejects the \x{200b} pattern with character code point value in \x{} or \o{} is too large. The command suppresses this error and records no findings. Set LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 before the scan, and ensure that locale is available on the runner.

132-143: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

No workflow copy requires changes.

The repository contains one tracked .github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml. It uses the Unicode code-point pattern and grep -aPrl.

132-132: 🎯 Functional Correctness

No separate leading-BOM check is required.

The generic \x{feff} alternative matches both leading and embedded U+FEFF, consistent with the empty-linter pattern. No separate leading-BOM behaviour is indicated.
