fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything - #68
fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything#68hyperpolymath wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
MEASURED 2026-08-27: this gate's pattern caught 0 OF 6 invisible-character test
cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi
override or word joiner.
ROOT CAUSE: the pattern used UTF-8 BYTE sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P
matches CHARACTERS. Bytes c2 a0 are ONE character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for TWO
characters, U+00C2 then U+00A0, which is never present.
grep -P '\xc2\xa0' -> miss
grep -P '\x{a0}' -> MATCH
Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings.
FIXED: codepoint escapes; C0 control characters \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F
added (TAB/LF/CR excluded); and grep -a, without which grep skips any NUL-bearing
file as binary.
The C0 range matters: a stray BACKSPACE byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran, and this linter called it clean.
Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
VERIFIED: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real
NBSP before the change was kept.
📝 WalkthroughSummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe Dogfood Gate now matches invisible characters by Unicode code point, includes selected C0 controls, and scans binary files as text. ChangesInvisible-character gate
Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The workflow can still miss invisible characters and pass when its scan fails, so the PR is not merge-ready until the pattern is compatible with the runner and scan errors fail the check. Poem

It does not reproduce the template headings or checklist, but it contains the required information and is mostly complete. Full details: Linked Issues checkExplanation The PR implements the codepoint escapes, C0 control range, and grep -a changes required for the CI gate in issue Resolution Add the separate leading-BOM detection, update the compiled linter and configuration to use the same C0 range, and correct the remaining inlined gate copies if issue Full details: Docstring CoverageExplanation No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. In @.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml:
- Line 131: Update the PATTERNS definition in the dogfood gate to use GNU grep
3.8-compatible UTF-8 byte escapes instead of unsupported \x{...} code-point
escapes, while preserving the existing control-character checks. Add a check for
files whose content begins with a UTF-8 BOM and append those file paths to
/tmp/empty-lint-results.txt so they are reported by the workflow.
Apply the same fix in @.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml at line 142: The same
unsupported-pattern and ignored-error behavior applies at this command.

Make the scan pattern compatible with the runner and fail on scan errors. The current \x{...} escapes are rejected by the runner, so the redirected command produces no findings while the workflow continues as if the scan passed. Use syntax supported by the runner, and make a non-zero scan status fail the check so regex errors cannot be reported as a clean scan.

definition in the dogfood gate to use GNU grep 3.8-compatible UTF-8 byte escapes
instead of unsupported \x{...} code-point escapes, while preserving the existing
control-character checks. Add a check for files whose content begins with a
UTF-8 BOM and append those file paths to /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt so they are
reported by the workflow.

unsupported-pattern and ignored-error behavior applies at this command.

Pull Request Overview
The PR successfully addresses the root causes of the ineffective invisible-character gate by switching to PCRE-compatible Unicode escapes and ensuring the scanner treats files as text even if they contain null bytes. The code is generally up to standards according to Codacy analysis.
However, there are two critical risks that could lead to the gate failing silently again: the lack of a (*UTF8) prefix for the PCRE engine (which is required for code points above \x{FF}) and the suppression of stderr. These should be addressed to ensure the CI logic is robust across different runner environments. Additionally, while the logic is improved, there are no automated test fixtures included to verify these patterns against known bad files, which leaves the gate vulnerable to future regressions.
About this PR
- There are no automated test fixtures or sample files containing invisible characters added in this PR. Without these, it is difficult to verify the fix works as expected or to prevent future regressions where the gate might stop matching specific characters.
Test suggestions
- Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0)
- Verify detection of Null byte (\x00) within a supported file extension
- Verify detection of a C0 control character like Backspace (\x08)
- Verify that standard whitespace (TAB, LF, CR) does not trigger the gate
- Verify detection of Unicode Byte Order Mark (BOM)

Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0)
2. Verify detection of Null byte (\x00) within a supported file extension
3. Verify detection of a C0 control character like Backspace (\x08)
4. Verify that standard whitespace (TAB, LF, CR) does not trigger the gate
5. Verify detection of Unicode Byte Order Mark (BOM)

🔴 HIGH RISK
Suggestion: Simplify the regex into a character class and use the (*UTF8) prefix to ensure Unicode code points are correctly interpreted.

🟡 MEDIUM RISK
Suggestion: Improve performance by batching files with '+', remove the redundant '-r' flag, and remove '2>/dev/null' to allow errors (like PCRE compilation issues) to appear in the workflow logs.

Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.
Root cause
The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (
\xc2\xa0) whilegrep -Pmatches characters. Bytesc2 a0are one character U+00A0;\xc2\xa0asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.Only
\x00worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.Fixed
\x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1Fadded (TAB/LF/CR excluded)grep -a— without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binaryThe C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.
