Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved detection of invisible and control characters during automated checks.
    • Updated scanning to reliably inspect files containing binary-like content.

Walkthrough

The empty-lint workflow now detects invisible characters by Unicode code point, includes selected control characters and the word joiner, and scans binary files as text.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Invisible-character detection
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The PATTERNS regex uses Unicode code-point escapes and includes selected control characters and \x{2060}. The grep scan uses -a to process binary files as text.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f4d36

The gate still allows files with a leading UTF-8 BOM to pass, so the intended invisible-character protection remains incomplete. Merge should wait until the leading-BOM check is added or the remaining gap is explicitly accepted.

Poem

A rabbit checks each hidden mark,
With code points bright against the dark.
Binary files now join the queue,
Control signs face the scanner too,
And clean files keep their paths clear.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the separate leading-BOM check.

Line 131 only places \x{feff} in the grep -P pattern. It does not implement the separate leading-BOM check required by the PR objective. A file with a leading UTF-8 BOM can therefore pass the gate. Add a byte-level check for the first three bytes and merge those paths into /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt; keep \x{feff} for embedded BOMs.

Pull Request Overview

The PR correctly identifies that the invisible-character gate was previously using incorrect patterns; however, the proposed fix has a critical flaw: PCRE (grep -P) requires an explicit (*UTF) prefix to correctly interpret Unicode escapes like \x{200b} in UTF-8 source files. Without this, the gate will continue to fail for several of the targeted characters. Additionally, the execution of the command within the CI workflow can be optimized for performance. While Codacy indicates the PR is up to standards, the missing UTF-8 mode in the regex and the lack of automated tests for these patterns are the primary concerns.

About this PR

  • No automated regression tests or dummy files containing the targeted invisible characters are provided in this PR. This makes it difficult to verify the efficacy of the regex patterns and the gate logic without manual testing.

Test suggestions

  • Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0)
  • Verify detection of Zero-Width Space (U+200B)
  • Verify detection of C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
  • Verify detection of Null bytes (\x00)
  • Verify that files containing null bytes are not skipped by grep
Prompt proposal for missing tests
Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0)
2. Verify detection of Zero-Width Space (U+200B)
3. Verify detection of C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)

🔴 HIGH RISK

Unicode escapes like \x{200b} and \x{feff} will fail to match multi-byte UTF-8 sequences unless the PCRE engine is in UTF-8 mode. Prefix the pattern with (*UTF) to ensure these invisible characters are correctly detected.

⚪ LOW RISK

Suggestion: Optimize the 'find' execution by batching file arguments and removing the redundant recursive '-r' flag from 'grep'. The '-r' flag is unnecessary because 'find' already performs the directory traversal and provides specific file paths to 'grep'.

Suggested change
-exec grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" {} \; > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt 2>/dev/null
-exec grep -aPl "$PATTERNS" {} + > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt 2>/dev/null
