What changed

Typing !git status (or !npm test, …) in a session's composer runs the command in the session's working copy instead of sending it to the model, like Claude Code's bash mode. The command, its stdout / stderr and exit code show as a card in the transcript, are saved with the session, and go to the agent with the next message. Closes #968.

Why

#968: running a quick command meant leaving the conversation for a terminal, and the agent never saw what you ran.

How

  • Composer — completeSubmit hands a leading ! to a new onRunShellCommand prop, right after the /compact check, unless files are attached. Returning false keeps the draft, as /compact does.

  • Running it — new shell_command.rs with shell_command_run / shell_command_stop:

    • It runs through the shell the terminal opens (pty::default_shell, so a login shell on zsh / bash / sh / fish) with -c. On Windows that's cmd /C or PowerShell -Command.
    • The folder is sessionWorkCwd: the worktree when the session has one, the same place the agent's own commands run.
    • stdin is closed. Environment and process group come from prepare_child, as for a harness, and the spawn holds worktree_lifecycle::reserve_spawn.
    • Each stream keeps its first 30,000 bytes, the same cut Claude Code makes for ! output, and is read to the end so a chatty command never blocks on a full pipe.
    • Stop signals the whole process group. A command stays stoppable until its pipes close, which covers !npm run dev & leaving a child behind after the shell exits. reap_harness_children stops any command still running on quit.
  • Transcript — a new shell block role carrying ShellCommandMeta:

    • groupTurns puts it on its own row, like a handoff divider.
    • ShellCommandRow draws it as a bordered card, unlike the agent's plain tool rows: the ! prompt, the command, the outcome (Running… / Exit n / Stopped), stdout with stderr after it in red, and an "Output truncated" footer when cut. The output scrolls past 20rem.
    • sanitizeBlock keeps it. A command that a quit cut short restores as Stopped.
    • activeTurnIndex treats a trailing command as "no live turn", so the agent's previous turn doesn't light up as Working while the command runs.
  • Busy while it runs — the session is busy, so:

    • Stop and Escape reach onStop, which only signals the command and leaves the agent's process alone.
    • A message sent meanwhile is queued, never steered, since there is no turn to steer into, and goes out when the command finishes.
    • ! typed during an agent turn is refused with a status line.
  • Context for the agent — submitSession prefixes the next prompt with every command run since the last message, using Claude Code's tags and adding the exit code (withShellCommands):

    I ran this shell command myself before this message:

    <bash-input>git status</bash-input>
    <bash-stdout>…</bash-stdout>
    <bash-stderr></bash-stderr>
    Exit code 0.

    This happens before the handoff wrap, so it works the same for Claude, Codex and every other harness. Native slash commands and edited resends don't get it.

Not in this PR

  • Remote (SSH) projects. The host has no generic exec: workspace.run maps to a fixed list of commands. ! isn't intercepted there, so it stays an ordinary message. Supporting it needs a host method plus a capability flag; happy to follow up.
  • Live output. Output appears when the command ends. Stop works the whole time.
  • Worktree created on first send. A session in worktree mode that hasn't sent its first message has no worktree yet, so a ! command there runs in the project folder.
  • Saved prompts: Settings → Prompts and ! to insert in any composer #694 overlap. Saved prompts: Settings → Prompts and ! to insert in any composer #694 (open) also gives ! a meaning in the composer: it opens a saved-prompt picker. If both land, a leading ! needs to settle on one. This PR only acts on submit, so a picker that closes when nothing matches would leave !cmd to run here.

UI

!git status --short, a failing !npm run lint with stderr, and a command still running, under an agent turn. Rendered from the transcript component with the app's stylesheet (I haven't run this in a packaged build).

Dark Light

Tests

  • shell_command.rs:
    • runs in the folder and reports both streams and the exit code;
    • a missing folder is an error, not a run somewhere else;
    • Stop ends a running command;
    • Stop reaches a background child still holding the pipes after the shell exited. This one fails if the run is forgotten as soon as the shell exits: it never becomes stoppable.
    • the output cap.
  • shellCommand.test.ts:
    • parsing !;
    • recording the run and its result;
    • its own row in groupTurns;
    • the context goes only with commands since the last message, skipping one still running and draft messages;
    • persistence.
  • Composer.test.ts: !cmd goes to onRunShellCommand and not onSubmit. A refusal keeps the draft. Without the handler (remote, Mono) it is sent as text.
  • sessionStore.test.ts / sessionStoreRestore.test.ts: the block survives a save, and a running one restores as Stopped.
  • AgentTranscript.shellCommand.test.ts: the card renders. A running command doesn't show the agent's previous turn as working; this fails on main's activeTurnIndex.

Checklist

  • I ran npm run check
    • check:web: 485 files / 5375 tests passed, tsc --noEmit clean.
    • check:rust: cargo fmt --check and clippy -D warnings clean, cargo test 660 passed (macOS).
    • In one full run, the unrelated harness::tests::omp_accepts_rpc_capable_binary_and_rejects_other_names failed once. It passed 3× on its own and in the next three full runs.
    • The Windows branch (cmd /C with raw_arg, PowerShell -Command) is only compiled by CI; I couldn't cross-check it locally.
  • This PR is small and focused
  • I did not mix unrelated changes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Run shell commands in local sessions by starting a composer entry with !. Commands run in the session’s working directory, and their status and output appear in the transcript.
    • Stop running commands and view their exit status, errors, and notices when output is truncated.
    • Completed command output is included in the next message’s context. Follow-up messages are queued while a command runs.
    • When a session is restored, commands that were still running are marked stopped; their available output is retained.

Typing `!git status` in a session's composer now runs the command in the
session's working copy (the worktree when it has one) instead of sending
it to the model, like Claude Code's bash mode. The command, its stdout,
stderr and exit code show as a card of their own in the transcript, are
saved with the session, and go to the agent with the next message in
Claude Code's <bash-input> / <bash-stdout> / <bash-stderr> tags.

The command runs through the shell the terminal opens, with the
environment and process group a harness gets. While it runs the session
is busy, so Stop and Escape end it and messages sent meanwhile queue
until it is done. Each stream keeps its first 30,000 bytes.

Remote projects are left as they were: the host has no way to run an
arbitrary command yet, so there `!` stays an ordinary message.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds ! shell commands to local session composers. Tauri runs commands and returns bounded output. The application records command status and output in session history, renders commands as standalone transcript rows, and adds completed command context to eligible prompts.

Changes: Composer shell commands

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shell command session state
src/features/sessions/model/session.ts, src/features/sessions/model/shellCommand.ts, src/features/sessions/model/shellCommand.test.ts, src/features/sessions/data/sessionStore.ts, src/features/sessions/data/sessionStore.test.ts, src/features/sessions/data/sessionStoreRestore.test.ts, src/features/sessions/model/btw.ts, src/features/sessions/model/inFlight.ts, src/features/sessions/model/inFlight.test.ts
Adds shell block metadata and lifecycle helpers. Persistence sanitizes shell blocks, and hydration changes running commands to stopped. Shell blocks are excluded from snapshot visibility, and running shell commands are excluded from in-flight references. Tests cover lifecycle, prompt context, persistence, restoration, and in-flight behavior.
Shell process execution and registration
src-tauri/src/shell_command.rs, src-tauri/src/harness.rs, src-tauri/src/pty.rs, src-tauri/src/lib.rs

Explanation

The changes support issue #968. They add local shell execution, process cleanup, composer routing, session metadata and persistence, transcript rendering, prompt context, quit restoration, and focused tests. The visibility changes expose existing execution helpers required by the shell runner. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #968 requires leading ! commands for local and remote SSH workspaces. The PR implements local execution, including session-directory handling, shell execution, output capture, stop behavior, transcript persistence, agent context, and focused tests. The PR explicitly leaves remote sessions unchanged because no remote execution capability exists. This leaves a concrete coding requirement unmet.

Resolution

Add a remote execution capability to the host protocol. Route leading ! commands from remote sessions through that capability. Implement remote working-directory and environment handling, output capture, exit status, persistence, agent context, stop behavior, and tests.

Comment thread src/app/App.tsx
Quitting while a `!` command runs left the session busy, so inFlightRefs
listed it, the quit wrote "Turn interrupted when MonoCode quit." and the
next launch sent the agent "Continue from where you left off." though no
agent turn was cut short. The quit dialog still counts it as running.

Block shell commands while automatic continuation is pending.

A restored interrupted session has busy: false and the interrupt message as its last block. The composer can submit ! before the delayed continuation callback runs. onRunShellCommand then appends a running shell block and sets busy: true.

If the user quits while that command runs, inFlightRefs excludes the session. The quit path therefore does not persist a relaunch reference. The shell block also hides the interrupt message, so the session no longer qualifies for automatic continuation after relaunch. Guard the shell entrypoint while canAutoContinue(current) is true.

The cherry-picked upstream PR hardbeat920#1042 writes its card and its busy notice in
English; they go through i18n here (sessions:shellCommand.*,
app:shellCommand.busy). Up / Down in the composer now steps through the
`!` commands too, written the way they were typed, and stopping a running
command with Escape no longer hands an earlier message back to the
composer.
