What changed

Everything Claude still runs in the background (commands, monitors, subagents), whichever turn started it, is listed in a compact card above the composer with its name, command and running time, and a stop button for each. When a task Claude left running wakes it after the turn has ended, the session now shows as busy until Claude yields again.

Closes #501

Why

Today a background task only gets a row under the message Claude yielded with ("Running in background"). Once the conversation moves on, that row scrolls away, and the only hint left is the count in the status line ("3 tasks running in background"). There is no way to see which ones are still running or to stop one without stopping everything.

Under that, the Claude adapter only follows tasks for the turn it has open:

  • runTurn clears backgroundTasks and backgroundRows on every message. A task started before the latest message is forgotten, so cancelClaudeTurn, which stops whatever is in backgroundTasks, no longer reaches it.
  • Claude Code wakes itself when a background task finishes, even after the MonoCode turn has ended (for example when it wakes after the 15 s RESUME_GRACE_MS window). noteClaudeTurnStarted returns at !live.activeTurn, so nothing opens a turn for that. The reply streams in while the session reads as idle, and any task Claude starts in that reply holds no turn. The next message then clears it as above.

What this changes, all in the Claude adapter except the card:

  • Tracking per session. runTurn no longer clears backgroundTasks or backgroundRows. It only drops rows of tasks that have finished. cancelClaudeTurn clears them after sending stop_task for each one.
  • The list. syncBackgroundJobs (called from syncBackgroundWait, so on every change) sends a new background.jobs event with { id, title, command?, startedAt } per task. It lists only tasks in the CLI's latest background_tasks_changed, which the CLI defines as the full set of live background tasks, replacing the previous one. Foreground tool calls and ambient tasks are not listed. command comes from the Bash / Monitor call that started the task.
  • Stopping one task. There is a new optional stopBackgroundJob on the adapter (stopHarnessBackgroundJob in the registry). Claude implements it with the same stop_task control request Stop already sends. The row goes away once the CLI reports the task ended. A task stopped this way no longer holds the turn for the 15 s follow-up window: Claude Code's own session runner (2.1.301) only holds for a follow-up after a completed or failed task, not a stopped one. If Claude does pick back up, that is a woken turn (next point).
  • Woken turns. When Claude writes (main-thread assistant / stream_event) with no turn open, noteClaudeOutput opens one. It sets activeTurn, so the existing hold logic (waiting on its tasks, background rows, the grace window) applies unchanged. It sends session.woke, which sets busy. When that turn settles, finishActiveTurn sends session.idle (stopStreaming) instead of resolving a send that doesn't exist. Only Claude's own output opens such a turn, not system/init, so nothing without a reply behind it can leave a session stuck busy. A follow-up written in meanwhile is queued or steered per the user's setting, as for any busy session. Steering works because the adapter has a turn open.

Stop button: unchanged. It stops the turn and every background task, now including ones started before the latest message. That is what the comment in cancelClaudeTurn already says it means, and it matches Claude Code. Without the perTaskStopAffordance initialize option, an interrupt kills background tasks too. Turning that option on would make Stop spare background agents. That felt like a separate decision, so this PR leaves it off. To stop a single task, use its button in the card.

stopStreaming drops the list along with backgroundTasks. A turn only ends once its background work is done, or through a Stop that ends that work too.

Codex: MonoCode's Codex adapter doesn't receive any background work today, so this is Claude-only. The event and the card are harness-neutral, and stopBackgroundJob is optional. Remote sessions show the card without stop buttons, because the call would go to the local adapter.

Related open PRs: #1037 (ours) changes noteTaskNotification / showBackgroundRows, and #888 changes the fold and background.updated in apply.ts. This PR adds new functions and event cases next to them. Merging this with either one or both onto main is clean, and the Claude adapter, core, and transcriptActivity tests (413) pass on the combined tree.

One limit I left alone: the registry's idle park still stops a session 3 minutes after its last send settled, even if Claude is in a woken turn by then. That is unchanged from main; it can be a follow-up if wanted.

UI

Rendered with Playwright (WebKit) from the real AgentTranscript and Composer and the app stylesheet, with the same session state in both shots. Claude started a dev server, a test watcher and a review subagent, and the conversation has moved on since.

Before: the rows for those tasks have scrolled away. Only the count is left.

before

After: each task is listed above the composer with its command and running time, and can be stopped on its own. The card uses the same style as the message queue and the usage-limit notice, and takes no room when nothing runs.

Validation

New tests in claudeLive.test.ts ("claude background jobs"). All four fail on main (checked by running the new file against main):

  • lists a background command with its command until it ends: on main there is no list (backgroundJobs is undefined).

  • shows Claude as busy when a task wakes it after the turn, until it yields with its work done: the turn ends; Claude wakes and starts a watcher, yields, and the watcher finishes and wakes it again. This expects session.woke, then session.idle only after the last reply, and busy in between. On main there are no such events.

  • keeps a task from an earlier turn listed after the next message, and Stop reaches it: on main the next message forgets the task and Stop sends no stop_task for it.

  • stops one job without holding the turn for a follow-up: sends stop_task for that task only, and the turn settles as soon as the CLI reports it stopped, without the 15 s wait. On main there is no stopClaudeBackgroundJob.

  • still holds for the follow-up when the stop never reached Claude (from CodeRabbit's review): if writing stop_task fails, the task isn't marked stopped and still holds the turn for its follow-up.

Also new: two reducer tests in apply.test.ts (session.woke / session.idle / background.jobs, and Stop drops the list), and BackgroundJobs.test.ts (rows, running time, stop buttons, nothing rendered without tasks, no stop button without a handler).

  • npm run check:web: vitest 484 files / 5372 tests passed (2 files / 13 tests skipped), tsc --noEmit clean. No Rust touched, so I didn't run check:rust.
  • prettier --check is clean on everything I changed. SessionPane.tsx and claudeLive.test.ts have unformatted lines from before, which I left alone.
  • I didn't run the app against a live Claude Code. The protocol behavior (background_tasks_changed semantics, stop_task, how Claude Code treats a stopped task) is from the CLI's own schema descriptions in 2.1.301 and the existing fixtures here.

Checklist

  • I ran npm run check (check:web; no Rust files changed)
  • This PR is small and focused
  • I did not mix unrelated changes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • View active background tasks in a session, including their titles, optional commands, and elapsed time.
    • Stop individual background tasks from the session composer. A task is marked as stopping while the request is processed.
    • Background tasks remain visible across turns and update as they start or finish; completed tasks are removed from the list.
    • When background work wakes a session, it remains busy until the follow-up work completes.

…tton

A background command, monitor or subagent only showed as a row under the
message Claude yielded with, so it scrolled away as the conversation went on,
and there was no way to stop one without stopping everything.

The Claude adapter now keeps its tasks for the session instead of clearing
them on every message, and sends the full list (from the CLI's
background_tasks_changed) whenever it changes. The composer shows it as a
compact card with each task's name, command and running time, and a stop
button that sends stop_task for that task alone. A task stopped this way no
longer holds the turn for 15 seconds waiting on a follow-up.

When Claude starts writing with no turn open (a task it left running woke
it), the adapter opens a turn for it, so the session shows as busy, waits
on the work that turn starts like any other, and settles when Claude yields.

Stop still stops the turn and every background task, whichever turn started
it.

If writing stop_task fails, the task keeps running and still wakes Claude
when it ends, so it must not be marked as stopped.

Retain tasks whose cancellation request fails.

If writeJson rejects while cancelClaudeTurn sends stop_task, the catch ignores the failure and the following clear() calls discard the task and job state. The Claude task can continue running, but finishBackgroundTask can no longer find it. The task therefore cannot establish its follow-up hold when it finishes and can still wake Claude outside the tracked state.

stopClaudeBackgroundJob already restores task tracking when the same write fails. Apply equivalent failure handling in cancelClaudeTurn instead of clearing failed tasks.
