Since I can't get cairo to work on anaconda for mac, I adapted your code to use matplotlib if cairo is unavailable. I did a fair amount of cleanup so that I could use the same histogram for both plotters.
I added py2/py3 compatibility.
I now test if any options start with '-' and send them directly to the git log command. This means you don't need gitopts="..." anymore, and author=... becomes --author=...
