ci(dependabot): stop duplicate and always-failing dependency PRs - #195
Conversation
Dependabot scanned /, /package and /example separately, but bun.lock lives only at the root. Every bump in example/ arrived twice, and the copy from /example had no lockfile change, so `bun install --frozen-lockfile` failed in every job (#175-#177 next to #172-#174). - Scan only the root. The workspaces are updated from there. - Group Reanimated with Worklets. Worklets 0.13 alone fails pod install against Reanimated 4.6 (#173). - Put the example app's runtime dependencies in one PR. - Split dev dependencies into a minor/patch group and a major group, so the majors no longer keep the safe updates from passing (#144, #178). - Ignore majors of Expo packages, babel-preset-expo and @babel/core, which come with an Expo SDK upgrade, and TypeScript 7, which typescript-eslint rejects. - Check monthly instead of weekly, for both Bun and GitHub Actions.

GitHub's options reference lists `dependency-type` in groups for npm but not for bun, which reads as if the bun groups would take every dependency. dependabot-core registers the same production check for bun as for npm (bun/lib/dependabot/bun.rb), and the old dev-dependencies group here only ever took devDependencies (#144, #178) while the example app's runtime dependencies came as separate PRs (#172-#174).
Why
Eight Dependabot PRs were open and six of them could never pass:
bun.lockchange. The config scanned/exampleand/packageon top of/, but the lockfile lives only at the root, so every job fails atbun install --frozen-lockfile.pod installand needs 4.7.The same happened on 2026-09-14 (#77 and #87 closed, #78 and #81 combined by hand in #86).
What changes
/only. A run from the root already updatespackage/andexample/.reanimated: Reanimated and Worklets together.example-app: runtime dependencies. Only the example app has any.dev-dependencies: minor and patch updates.dev-dependencies-major: majors, which usually need a config or code change.expo,expo-*,@expo/*,babel-preset-expoand@babel/core. Dependabot should open four PRs:
reanimated: Reanimated 4.7.0 and Worklets 0.13.0.example-app: expo 57.0.25.dev-dependencies: 8 minor/patch updates.dev-dependencies-major: ESLint 10,@eslint/js10,eslint-plugin-react-hooks7, globals 17, release-it 21 and TypeScript 6. This one needs migration work before it can pass.Need help on this PR? Tag
